Micro Four Thirds
As mentioned by Darko in the Nikon thread, who else is excited about this new technology?

I'm interested to see what kind of progression is made with these cameras and whether nikon or canon will start playing as well.

Personally, I think it will be great. Having a small "dslr" that I can take around with me everywhere without worrying about weight would be awesome.

Not me, to be honest. I think they'll have to really scream to get the pixel count high enough to suit the current 'MP IS EVERYTHING' market, and this will result in high noise at low ISO. If they put out a 6MP model it's possible that it'll come off alright, but otherwise I'm really just not feeling it hey.

[Klips has] got have the sandiest giney in this forum.

Why should I be excited about Micro Four Thirds?

Essentially kills the mirror = more space

The hardware can handle it now

Essentially meaning a camera like this

Can change lenses as so

Hot.

I don't want a big fuckoff SLR, but I want to play with lenses - maybe you can relate to this sentiment

some reading

Can't wait for this sexy lil number

This one already exists (but it's not small enough yet for my tastes)

Even more reading

I heart future SLR's as small as film SLR's of the past - also retro Leica-ish camera's*

*would kill first born for a Leica M8

What are they deriving four thirds from? 1 & 1/3 of what?

Have they corrected the main issue vs SLR's?

Where the preview/image is NOT EXACTLY what the lens is seeing/will photograph. The whole SLR thingy is about seeing through the lens, not slightly next to it/above it/below it.

Maybe have been fixed years ago, I donno...

Even when looking through the view finder? The DSC 717 was the last camera I had that did it with video representation. It was slow, it was shit. If I move/zoom a lens, lag in the view finder is fail. Video in the view finder also lacked a LOT of detail back then.....

Has it been solved??? Or should I only be looking at Micro 43's for a P&S hybrid?

I wonder if that's because generally speaking, photographers are more worried about the picture they're taking rather than how cool they're gear looks.

/shrugs. Nice camera. Looks like it would be at home sitting next to the couch my folks had in the 70's. How tres chic.

not just the quality but practicality. id say youd have less fatigue and rsi from a full sized body with prolonged use

tho as something you can throw in your bag/pocket and get into gigs cos its not "pro" then its def. a winner

Aside from being a lot more expensive and bigger, I just don't see how this makes for a better laptop bag camera than my ixus.

I didn't have a media pass (for once) at summadayze, and was held up at the gate with my Canon S5is... I was surprised. Security said I couldn't take it in - because I could put other lenses on it, it was considered professional, even though I had just the basic camera only, no adaptor, hood, flash, etc.

Strictly, it's doesn't have an "interchangable" lens, is just a big point and shoot!

I ended up calling one of the guys from Future Entertainment, to come down and let me pass. I didn't bother to argue with the door guy...

Guess it just comes down to how intelligent the security is, but I was also questioned twice more inside the event about my "credentials" and had to explain it all again.

Next time I might just make do with my IXUS

dude just get the ITM contributor pass, you may not get the free ticket for the festival - but they seem to be happy with multiple contributors for photos.. then just take a couple of sushi pics to show the bouncers

my next camera will definitely be in this format, all you neighsayers are missing one aspect of this format, the sensor is 225mm² while a compact camera has 25mm² that's 9 times more light! it has about half the sensor surface area of a DSLR, but is much closer to a compact in size, that's a truly glorious compromise, being able to use diffrent lenses is just icing on the cake.

pretty much proves my point and as netts mentioned, if it looks the part and doesnt look like itll fit easily into your pocket then its "pro".

I like it....although at the price, i am not certain i am willing to part with that sort of cash right now
I'd rather stick with me P&S and DSLR
Give it a year and some more competition, this will probably be my P&S replacement, pending a price drop

oh boooo i totally can't afford one - but you're totally right Garthyboy - will just wait a little longer and no doubt the price will drop dramatically.
