Next Generation of TV (screens) 2012/13
So,

I think techology has finally started to reach the point that manufacturers are capable of building large size flat panel OLED and AMOLED tv technology.

http://singularityhub.com/2012/01/04...ck-and-7-5-kg/

to the point that the tvs expected to be released are better than any media currently produced.

blu-ray? pfft, my tv can do better.

this stuff at max specs would make high definition look like a CRTV.

anyway, im excited for this new technology. LG seems to be at the forefront for the large screen stuff but Sony and Samsung seen to be dabbling in the OLED technology for other purposes.

e.g.

samsung making transparent and foldable screens
http://singularityhub.com/2010/01/06...-screensvideo/
http://singularityhub.com/2010/01/19...-screen-video/

in terms of the foldable, can you imagine the implications for tablet computers?!

sonys even got the stuff rolling
http://singularityhub.com/2010/05/29...playing-video/

but oh man, i want one of those LG tvs!

edit: bit more research finds that samsung will also be anouncing a 55 inch OLED tv at CES

http://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php...&id=1321953693

and by the sounds of it, this could be the new "google tv" intigrated technology we've been waiting for.

CES next week. sit back and drool over tech that won't be out* for another year.

* by out I mean reasonably affordable for everyone. If I can get a 55 OLED tv for under $5000, sold.

Doesn't the world end in 2012 jarrard? Thread seems a bit pointless.

i thought the only decent commercial tvs went up to 65 inch?

anything bigger tended to be crap and only bigger because theyre bigger, but not actually better and bigger at the same time therefore not better just bigger?

i still reckon you'd be better off with a 64"samsung or a 65" panasonic.

most loungerooms arent big enough for these tvs anyway, 55" probably best suits.

my folks bought that new fandangled lg 65" 3d led lcd a couple of months ago. the picture quality is fucking amazing. only took an afternoon of watching before it didn't look big, and my rent's living room isn't enormous.

anywho, it will be years before OLED tvs are affordable. a 55" will be over 10k on introduction imo.

jrod, there's plenty of 4K resolution cameras coming out from RED, Canon and others. in the next few years, many films will be shot at 4K and i assume blu-ray is capable of supporting 4K resolution.

i think lcd monitors will get a shake up before TVs, hopefully 1440p/1600p 27-30" monitors are much more affordable in the next 12-24 months.

Speaking of 3D tv's, I rather a 3D tv be announced at CES that does NOT require glasses.

although with all new announcements, hopefully the price of the current range of Sammy tvs drops nicely so I can pick up a 55 series 8 LED LCD with my redundancy money.

I put a motherfucking 52" in my bedroom and it looks small after a few months.... I cant even look at the 38" in the loungeroom anymore.

Bring on the 70"+ TV's.

some awesome new LG nano led tvs and high end plasma due for announcement at CES as well

http://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php...&id=1320827915

the LM9600 reportedly released in australia Q1 or Q2 for under 3K.

these look pretty incredible too, not quite oled incredible, but better than anything currently out.

explanation of nano led

Quote:

Nano technology developments are quickly leading to LED lights as bright as ordinary bulbs.
LEDs are very energy-efficient and 70% of the energy is converted to light, however just 20% of that light escapes. A high refractive index at the LED-air interface means the light is reflected straight back inside. Some LEDs are made from gallium nitride, perhaps the most optically-awkward semiconductor material of all.
Some of this extra light can be extracted by making tiny holes all over the surface of the LED. At 200 nanometres (nm) in diameter, they are 400 times narrower than a human hair but only penetrate 100nm into the LED's surface. Spaced out at 300nm apart, 160 holes would fit across a hair's width. Although a single LED chip may be around one third of a square millimetre (0.3mm by 0.3mm), that's enough space for hundreds of thousands of holes.
The process of creating these tiny holes can be expensive, however nanoengineers have found effective ways to imprint the holes into LEDs at a far greater speed, and at a much lower cost. Nanoimprint [lithography] seems to be the most suitable technology for this.
An early practical use for these LED devices is likely to be backlights within LCD TVs, replacing cold cathode tubes and helping make thin TVs even thinner.
LG Electronics LG LEX8 is the world's slimmest full LED 3D TV. At just 0.88cm thin (and a 1.25cm bezel) the LG LEX8 provides the sharpest 3D images on the market.
The minimal design and high quality picture is achieved with LG's NANO Lighting Technology incorcorporating an extremely thin film printed with minuscule dots positioned in front of a full array of LEDs which disperse light more evenly and effectively across the screen, creating pictures that are clearer.
The LEX8 is LG's first television using nano technology.

I love the progression in technology as much as the next person but wonder what's the point of all this when the majority of FTA TV, which is the main function (?), is not in 1080P?

The vast majority of televised sport is SD, not even 720P.

Discuss.

Was just about to pose this same question. It applies to current gaming tech as well where bugger all titles are rendered in full 1080p. We won't see this happen until at least the next console cycle, which is what, 2-3 years away?

Also 4k HD technologies are really only going to be a revolution for cinema screens (Watching the Taxi Driver 4k remaster at Astor was fucking amazing), I can't see it being that much of a difference in quality at 42-60inch.

I'm interested in seeing what comes out, only so I know what I'll be picking up for $1k in a couple of years. So far I haven't enjoyed anything 3D, it's just uncomfortable to watch. So I'm looking forward to more bang for buck (and power efficiency) in 2D.

I think the current crop of 3D will be considered quaint and kitschy before too long. It's just a stepping stone to something more convincing.

Do you want these TVs now so they can be standard tech in 2015 and you can pick one up for $1500 when 1080p is standard, or do you want them to come out in 2015 and pay $5000 for a new one?

I don't want scientists and engineers sitting on their asses, I want them to do what they love doing and are paid to do. We would be nowhere technologically if we took that sort of pessimistic view.

i agree, those crappy clunky electronic glasses are just terrible, and too large.

they'll be replaced by tv technology using cinema style 3d glasses, and glasses-less 3d tv.

once it goes glasses-less, then i'll be interested in it. at the moment, its a gimmick, if its there its there.

Are cinema 3d glasses any better?
There's different technologies for that too.
Some of the glasses I've worn in the last year or two are terrible.
The best were the limited edition Harry Potter ones...

Shut up.
