if your goal is to simply ingest more protein, then yes, they work. if your goal is to drink protein shakes and get swole while sitting on the couch, then no, they don't work.

bump, want some advice if possible.

I dont go to the gym but i am in the pool 4 days a week pushing myself and i do a 40km bikeride too.
If i take protein will it help me gain a bit more weight and muscle mass?
I dont do any weights tho, is this an issue?

Increased muscle mass comes from muscle hypertrophy, which is usually induced by anaerobic exercise (such as weight training). Bike riding and swimming are more aerobic, and are not very effective tissue hypertrophy; they enhance storage of fats and carbohydrates within the muscles.

In regard to protein shakes: an adequate supply of amino acids (aka protein) is essential to produce muscle hypertrophy, if you can't get enough protein through normal eating, you can supplement with protein shakes. In saying this, if you have excess protein that your body doesn't use, it will turn it into fat. After all, 1g of protein = 4 calories.

Ok cool. So i should do a gym session before i get in the pool. Then it should help me out.
I want to increase muscle hypertrophy in a 7 week timeframe.

To be honest, I don't know much at all about cross-training weights and swimming (actually I don't know much at all about cross-training any sports). But I can tell you how to induce hypertrophy.

In the gym do 3 set of 8-12 of each exercise (to induce sarcoplasmic hypertrophy, I'd say squats for one)
Make sure you're getting enough protein (most people supplement with protein shakes)
Make sure you're getting enough overall calories (I'd say at least around 3000-3500)

you'd still put on a bit of muscle mass, but nothing like you would with weights. cycling (assuming you push yourself) will give you bigger quads, and swimming will strengthen your back/arms etc. but you ain't gonna get swole and there's a limit to how big your muscles will get. if you get sufficient protein from your diet then it's probably counter productive to add protein shakes. i have no referenced sources for this, it's just my assumption

Yeah, I did say "not very effective tissue hypertrophy" I'd imagine you would gain some muscle mass, just nothing like if you were doing anaerobic exercise.

Kind of... excess protein won't be stored as fat as readily as carbs or dietry fat for a number of reasons. This is a good read:

You should definitely give little timing to gyming daily and also take some good quality protein powders and shakes.. That too helps a lot in increasing muscle hypertrophy...
