Belconnen Mall Suicide
I went in this morning to visit a mate that works at the telstra shop, and he had a VERY distressing story to tell.

Apparently, sometime this morning a lady commited suicide in the belconnen mall, by jumping off the third floor where the spiral staircase/escalator is. Im not sure which im more disturbed by, the fact that someone commited suicide so close to home or the fact that they chose to do it in a crowded shopping mall. For those who dont know, the bottom floor is a huge christmas display, and at the time of the incident there were some 30 kids down there. Apparently she came within metres of hitting someone as well.

Whilst my friend did not witness this, he did have a look about 20 minutes later, and all he saw was a massive tarp covering a very large area...

I heard conflicting reports about her age and im not keen to speculate. But seriously, wtf.

I was told that she jumped as she was arguing with her b/f, she was about 25 years i think.

I had a few friends witness what happened . My friends sister was almost hit by the falling chick.

Its a pretty sad thing to happen, especially so close to Xmas, and also so close to where alot of children / pepole would have been. I think over all it was very sad / tragic event.

I get Goosebumps just thinking about it.

It wasn't a suicide, she was leaning over the railing with her kids, and she fell. They dont report suicides on the news, and there was a bulletin about it last night saying she fell.

Thank god I wasnt in the mall 1/2 hour earlier yesterday or I would have seen it. Apparently she landed right near Santa and some litttle kids.

It was reported suicide on some news bulletins, not on others. You can't say that for sure satie.

it's usually a general rule not to report suicides though, and even if they are suicides, not to explicitly say they are, out of concerns that there may be copycats and in respect to their family. so it's pretty weird that they're actually said it was a suicide.

I know for sure that I have heard/seen reports about suicides before on the news satie, and while it may be a general rule not to, with it being such a public event, perhaps it was deemed to upstage that rule.

Geez, not cool

I can't see someone falling over the barriers at Belco Mall. Unless pushed.... They're of a reasonable height for safety reasons.

What a place to commit suicide though

Oh...cool...media release link there....

"there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding her death" - in other words, she wasn't pushed, she jumped. One story says she "fell to her death". Those railings were pretty high, think it would take a lot to get you over them.

Wow, absolutely none of the witness who claim to have witnessed the death are prepared to divulge any of the details. The rumour mill will shortly go into a frenzy unless a definitive and corroborated statement is made by someone...

I'd be curious to read of the relationship of the demography typical in the Belconnen Mall at that time of day, and the views held by those people with respect to Australia's involvement in foreign conflicts.

I don't know if the Polic will say anything more than it was "not suspicious" if it was a suicide, probably to protect the woman's family.

I think you will find one person on Riot-ACT stated she jumped. I dare say it happened so quickly most people would be hard pressed to say what happened exactly.

I hardly think we need to link it to people's views on foreign conflicts. That's making a farce of the seriousness of the event.

Besides, it seems that a lot of the people affected were children.

Perhaps I'm living and thinking too far in the future, where death is all too common and normal. In Canberra, as in any town or community smaller than hours, each death is more than a statistic; it's an event. Compare that to what was brought up on the riot-act -- suicides at trainstations in Japan -- where a death is a statistic, something that is maybe mentioned in passing, if at all.

Perversely, I am still interested in the link I described: as i see it, the more predominantly conservative and aggressive areas, such as these small communities, are invariably those most affected by a death. The largely liberal sections of the community (by chance or by design from choosing to live in greater densities) seem to be less affected by it. Empathy on the home front v. empathy on the Western front. One's quiet while the other is hysterical.

The thing about it being in front of the children sucks bigtime, though.

Death is common now. I mean, logically, I'm sad for the people involved in the Belco tragedy, but it doesn't really bother me on an emotional level. If it was someone I knew, or if I had been there, that would be a different matter. Interesting to read your view on how communities accept death. Some food for thought.

Umm Ed, I think you're way over-generalising. This is a specific case, a death that is unexpected and happened in front of children at a time when people are festive (or whatever). I don't think it depends on the size of the community - if the same thing were to happen in Japan or Sydney there would be similar reactions.

That's not what I meant. I was referring to what Ed said - "Perhaps I'm living and thinking too far in the future, where death is all too common and normal." - I was saying death is common now and not a future thing.

Heh, "pun". The Irish use the punt as their currency, presumably because it rhymes with "bank manager".

That's true, they don't report suicides, but that doesn't mean it wasn't one. They decided to bend the rules and be ambiguous. Apparently she hopped the rail like a small fence.

i'd say the reason they would have reported this suicide is because of what sirraves said, it was a public thing, and possibly to get that Lifeline number out for people who need counselling.

KZA, are the born agains doing OK?

I love them so much. Rather than seeing this horrible event as a drawback, they're excited about the opportunity of using this incident as a means of conning god into comforting them through this emotionally turmultuous event. And He'll fucken fall for it too, the sappy faggot.

Yeah, you could jump. Or get pushed. But not accidentially fall. Some of the news stories say she fell. It implies an accidential fall.

suicides are often reported in the media. in cases of "jumpers" they will say the person fell. no lie there. gravity will make you fall
