Roots Manuva - Awfully Deep
the best album ive heard this year so far
I should get coffee. Coffee would help me think. But I should write something first, then reward myself with coffee. Coffee and a muffin. Ok, so I need to establish the themes. Maybe banana-nut.

after seeing the residents the other night i had to get out an old cd/ep of Primus, Miscellaneous Debris. i originally bought it for the cover of Peter Gabriel's Intruder, and it always stuck in my mind that one of the other covers was by 'some group' called the residents, as well as the meters, and pink floyd's 'have a cigar'

fun listen

Interesting new stuff:

Maximo Park - 'A Certain Trigger'
Catchy Northern English mod-punk-indie band signed to Warp Records. Lots of energy, some good bleepy keys stuff, and I saw their first video on Video Hits last night and they look kinda odd too. Like the way they sing in REALLY broad accents about very Northern English things.

The Bravery - 'The Bravery'
Debut album from a cool New York band who sound hugely like The Cure at times. Especially that 'Cure Remixed' CD. They use occasional electronical noises to give it all a bit of a modern feel, and have some cool upbeat drummy patterns. Good rocky poppiness.

M83 - 'Before The Dawn Heals Us'
Interesting album of kinda swooshy 80s-style moody stuff, beautiful atmospheric ambient-style soundscape tracks, and some proper fuckin' noisy bits too.

Treetops - 'Gospel EP'
Aussie band that's made some great tunes in the psychedelic pop styleeeee of Jefferson Airplane and The Byrds. Great harmonies and some neat twangy guitar.

Nostalgia 77 - 'The Garden'
Downbeat jazzy stuff. Some proper dischordant freak-out jazz in there, plus some nice summery tunes and a great jazz cover of 'Seven Nation Army'.

Kids Sing The Beatles
A CD of kids singing Beatles songs that I bought yesterday. 'When I'm 64' and 'With A Little Help From My Friends' are the best, cause the kid that sings them sounds about 4 years old. Happy!

IMHO the tracks were all over-produced. It was as though they said - "what have we got in our instrument case - heck, lets throw it all in!" For no integral musical reason bursts of instruments will suddenly appear. They do not add to the song but are mere distractions. The effect for me was of a lumbering animal with no grace or purpose.

Maybe I am missing the point. In defence, my friend said, "You had to be there at the time". I wasn't. Thank god for that!

Who would have thought an album of predominately covers, could be so outstanding, and not half-assed. But I suppose, we are talking about APC here.....

Good to see so many people listening to the clash. They really did write some great songs. I just realised I don't have any on my mp3 player yet (for shame!), but I do have Joe Strummer and the Mescaleroes - Global a Go Go. Also quality.

Badly Drawn Boy is always good, especially day of the bewiderbeast (as well as being a great album name).

Hungry Hippo: if you like the nu-swing/swing revival kinda vibe, check out Big Rude Jake. I'm assuming you have the Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Cherry Poppin Daddies and Squirrel Nut Zippers already.

"Have you fed the fish?" is the album name. I do like it, more than his new one (One plus one is one). Hard to explain why though.
