Movies you've just seen 2: Unnecessary reboot
I tend to watch a lot of DVDz and catch up on heaps of them all at once.

This last weekend I watched:

Taxi (soooooooo bad)
Spanglish (brilliant)
Bad Santa (funny ha ha ha and a swearing midget!!)
Girl Next Door (better than I thought)

And I scored a free copy of SAW!!!

What have you hired recently????

The last thing I hired was Garden State. I enjoyed it, nice little film. I'd quite like to see Spanglish too.

God Garden State was just brilliant!! I have a hard time choosing a fave between the 2, but GS is slightly on top.

I really love how Sandler is making the transition into off-beat comedy drama and is doing it well.

The spanish actress in Spanglish is breathtakingly beautiful. Really interesting characters and even Tea Leoni does a great job at her character.

I guarantee you'll like this Em$ki, if not then we can jelly wrestle some mo yo.

Mallrats

Both 5 stars - very very different movies but loved them both.

How can you consider Taxi as bad and Spanglish as good Thats a classic.

Anyway, I was off sick with tonsillitus recently and watched

Wonderland (Val Kilmer) Surprisingly good

Signs (Mel Gibson) Better than I though it was going to be, but not all that. Distracting rather than brilliant.

Dead Poets Society (Robin Williams, Ethan Hawke) Absolutely brilliant. Cant believe I had never seen this film

Collateral (Tom Cruise, Jamie Foxx) Excellent film. Jamie Foxx's performance really deserved the nomination for best supporting actor at the Oscars. Cruise was scary as the man who had been told that he could get into Katie Holmes's knickers if he wastes 50 people in one night... hold on.... you mean that wasnt the plot???

The Ring (first one). Great story that masked Naomi Watts' bad acting.

From Hell. Thought it was mildly entertaining at the time, average when it ended then thinking back didn't mind it at all. Plus it has Depp factor.

I can't wait to see Constantine again (on DVD from the 21st, I think), that was a really cool film and much better than I thought it was going to be.

Speaking of video rentals. My local video store closed down. $2 all rentals seemed way too cheap to make a living on.

yeh for sure emskina, garden state has a great soundtrack. awesome movie too.

wicker park was surprisingly good, tho the trailers for that movie did not do it any justice what so ever. made it out to be single white female style, when it was way more light hearted.

also saw...

american wedding (thought this would suck ass but it was actually quite funny, although stifler was waaaaayyy more annoying)

I saw Team America, World Police and I pissed myself laughing all the way through.

The humour was so silly and infantile, it was classic Parker and Stone

House of Flying Daggers was ok but ultimately disappointing - I rate Hero and Crouching Tiger over it.

Garden State is one of my fav movies. Watched it for the first time on a plane in the middle of the night and almost fell out of my seat laughing...

yeh, I thought house of flying daggers was utter shit really. piss poor story line, weak dramatisations and the sound track was totally ineffective as well, which is critical in epic films, especially foreign ones. hero was ok. crouching tiger owns.

man looking back over my offerings, I can't believe the bland films I've watched lately...if only I could recall the really really ridiculously good movies...just don't think there's been many!

while talking movies...

saw was great, especially when you hear the story of how it became a hollywood flick, as opposed to a more easily overlooked 'indy' style film festival type movie.

I loved this movie too.

I thought that the concept of the movie was wonderful, the acting excellent, the attention to period detail superb.

They really managed to portray peoples attitudes of the period really well.

It was a sad story, wonderfully told. I was engaged for the whole movie and left the cinema with a tear in my eye.

Agree with all of the above mini-reviews. Especially DPS. This is a once a year viewing for me.

Quote:

God Garden State was just brilliant

Saw it at the Cinemateque. It is one radical movie. Except they obviously ran out of money when doing the end. Which they obviously shot at the end. Don't these directors know that, the end is the beginning is the end?

Agree with the first summation. Disagree with the second. It had some rough patches but it was an atypical mini-Hollywood film. It could've ended in such a triumphant fashion but kept it real.

Not bad. Not bad!. Not fucking bad. Fucking brilliant more like it. Fucking brilliant.

So my last DVD adventures were:

The Hard Word - Australian film with Guy Pearce and Racheal Griffiths in it. Crime film. Very uneven but fairly mindless dribble. Very convenient.

Spellbound - Documentary on the Spelling Bee CHampionships for u/14's in the USA. It follows 8 contestants on their journey. I actually find this quite exhilerating. Then again, I haven't had a root in a damn while so that may explain that.

The Office Christmas Specials - God damn that Ricky Gervais. Comic talent to the max. We'll conveniently forget his involvement in the US version of the Office. Anyway I thought it was an obvious but vital end to such a brilliant series. So happy they only did 2 seasons of this show. Timing is fortitude.

I Heart Huckabees - Funny as fuck. A movie that said so much but so little. Just like philosophy does. Whalberg was funny as ... well.... fuck. So was Lilli Tomlin and Dustin Hoffman. Some cool little director effects as well.

Have watched a few in the past week which were very enjoyable

Watched Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind last night, brilliant, will be thinking about this one for a while and I love Carrey when he's playing it straight, top actor

The life and death of Peter Sellers, another well made, engaging and brilliantly acted film

Thank GOD for that!!! I was ready to get medieval!!

TAXI was THE lamest watchy thing (doesn't even deserve to be called a movie IMO) I've seen in ages. I don't think I chuckled more than twice, and that was only because I felt I had to utter a compulsory laugh or 2.

BAD story, WORSE 'comedy', ridiculous characters and the standard 'lesson they learn by the end of the movie' was, well you can fill in the blanks.

I would only recommend hiring this movie so you can scratch the dvd so deeply that the video store cannot repair it.

I've recently seen Lemony Snickets and loved every minute of it. Yer right on the (B) money Ms LKT when you say Carrey is good as a straight actor, but he's also one of the top comedians IMO still too.

I loved Sunny (the baby) she was too cute and funny!!

it ended the way i expected, as soon as she took the cheap hit she was either gonna end up quadraplegic, dead or marrying Eastwood, was very predictable and fell well short of being an award winning film for me.

They could've ended it with Swank's character getting better over time and making a comeback to boxing, with Eastwood's character reconciling with his daughter. That is the normal Hollywood route taken.

What would've been unpredictable in your view? I'm not having a go at you by the way just wondering how you thought they could've ended.
