Watched Margin Call last night brilliant film, an insight in to a trading house as the GFC first hits. Well worth the watch.

Yeah, I really like Margin Call, some great acting.

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. Was pretty light, as expected, no surprises. Emily Blunt is quite a lovely creature though.

Project X

Billed as a crossover between Superbad & The Hangover.

Long story short:

Loser kid, smart-ass Jewish friend and token fat kid with glasses throw a big party, which gets way out of control.

Characters not very likeable.

Lots of teenage boobs and upskirts.

The whole movie felt like a flo-rida/LMFAO music video.

Not a very funny movie, characters weren't likeable and story was non-existant - but worth seeing for the boobs (there are a lot of boobs).

A Few Best Men - Aussie flick about some pommy twat who meets and Aussie bird on some tropical island and proposes after only a few days, goes back to London, gets his mates and comes to Aussie for the wedding...pretty average really, slapstick stupidness with a few solid laughs, but as a whole, not great...Olivia Newton-John high on coke was probably the best bit, quite funny really.

I actually found a few best men pretty funny when i saw it

I watched a few movies last night:

War Horse - probably the longest-feeling movie i have ever watched. I think i fell asleep and woke up three times and it was still on. I found that once i started finally empathising with a particular human character, the story would move on and i would begin to lose interest (because the main protagonist was a frikkin horse, not a communicable human being). As a whole it was definitely a 'good' story, although it was too 'all over the place' and unrealistic in parts (like the barbed wire scene). Good watching if you are a patient horse lover with 3 hours to kill...which i was not.

5.8/10

Red State - up there with the most pleasantly surprising movies of 2012. Definitely a leftfield release from Kevin Smith, but creepy as fuck, action packed and full of 'what the fuck?!' moments right up until the end. Very very cool.

8.5/10

Yeah, it did have a few good moments, but as a whole, it was a bit average...I think it was lacking in likeable/relatable/believable characters more than anything

Re-watched Black Swan again the other night. Unbelievably awesome movie. No one does nervous breakdowns like Darren Aronofsky.

Mila Kunis/Natalie Portman touch feely kissy scenes so boner worthy. Natalie Portman is so impressive pulling her guts out on screen for 90% of the movie, she should've won some award.

Watched a bunch yesterday:

Stop-loss: Pretty decent movie, I like Joseph GL in pretty much everything his done. Movie pretty much about War in Iraq and the effects on people etc etc and those who were stop-loss'ed.

Uncertainty: Movie was alright, I didn't really follow it. Had like parallel realities going on or something. I was doing other things while it was on but it seemed alright. Had a cute dog in it. One life a couple finds a phone which has some uber important information and starts being hunted, the other seemed to just be about cultural differences and the ladies family + her dealing with being pregnant.

Tucker and Dale vs Evil: This movie was pretty funny. Had some good gore too. Some hillbillies go away for a fishing trip and some college kids are away at the same place, college kids think hillbillies are killers and end up killing themselves trying to kill them. Good watch if your feeling like blobbing

Invictus: Hadn't heard anything about this movie before. Was a nice portrayal of Nelson Mandela and his love for his country + rugby. Love the Morgan Freeman which is why I got it in the first place. Good for some cultural/history education.

Men in Black 3 - probably the best in the series, alhough we could only rank it against the first one as number 2 was...well, exactly that. Very cool in 3D and a great action flick that you can take the Girl too also.

Take This Waltz. New one with Michelle Williams and Seth Rogen. Not bad, but you could tell it was an early effort from a new(ish) director. Sarah Polley, who was in Go years ago. There was some great acting, but the way it was wrapped up was a bit film school stylez.

Contraband - meh, should have been way better. The main bad guy was way too feeble and gay for my liking.

6/10

Girl with the dragon tattoo (remake) - very slow burning but ultimately pretty good. I didnt get why they had to include the entire first hour though..the real 'relationship' only begins halfway through the movie. I know thats what prob happened in the book and that it is a long series that needs to be fleshed out but it seemed very unnessesary in the flow of the movie.

8/10

Thats my boy - wanted to hate it but absolutely loved it. Vintage Sandler stupidness and wicked cameos from
Spoiler:
vanilla ice and susan sarandon

8/10

Cabin in the woods - one of the best horror movies in the last few years. Pure Joss Whedon storyline reminded me a lot of a long epic episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer (monsters, funny dialogue etc). Very cool spin on the monster movie and a killer gorefest ending!!

glad to hear it, been keen to see this. almost didn't get a release here, I read they only gave it a run when fans started sending lumps of timber the distributors office

^ Also watching the bad spirit guy thing run along the wall....more funny than scary. Notable creepy bit was when the thing was just watching the kid and dad and the kid was all "dad it's just looking at us" <- not an exact quote, haven't watched it in awhile

Ted - definitely the most hyped comedy movie of 2012 so far so i went in with high expectations, too high i think. The first 30 mins was really underwhelming and even though the cinema was packed full of stoners who laughed at anything, i didnt really feel like it was that funny. The second half was much better though and the
Spoiler:
fight scene
and
Spoiler:
cameo from Flash Gordon
were epic. Good solid ending as well.

Good but not great

7/10

The Reef - Aussie 'jaws wannabe' shark movie starring half the cast of Underbelly. Was quite thrilling in parts as im ultra scared of being stuck in deep ocean but was ultimately pretty boring and flat. Worth a watch if you like these kind of movies though.

6/10

The Hangover 2 - after walking out of the movies halfway through while attempting to watch this the first time, i received advice from a 'friend' that this 'got way better in the second half' so i thought i would give it another chance. Boy was he wrong. Fuck you buddy, fuck you.

I saw God Bless America yesterday.

Think a darker more satirical take on Falling Down/Thelma & Louise/Bonnie & Clyde for 2012. Not entirely effective but harsh, funny, sad and satisfying in parts.

Really want to see God Bless America, have heard good things.

Watched Machine Gun Preacher yesterday, bit different to what I thought it would be but I still enjoyed it, just some ex con/drug addict going over to Africa to help children and fight rebels/child soldiers. I was picturing more Gerald Butler preaching to people via Machine Gun, sort of like a Judge Dredd type thing haha.

She looks fine in the new season of How I Met Your Mother.

Though, isn't her and Jason Biggs characters meant to look worn down as they have children now and shit? Which is why they're keen on the Reunion.

Melancholia: Got thirty minutes in and switched off due to boredom/not in the mood.

Might give it a 2nd go at a later date. I've got to stop buying depressing movies. I think the only comedies I own are Fargo and The Royal Tenenbaums.

Melancholia is brilliant, but yeah, you have to be in the mood and watch it by yourself. Also bonus Kirsten Dunst fully nude scenes.

Watched the Lockout. Sort of a high tech remake of Escape from New York, with Guy Pearce playing the Kurt Russell, with bonus high end CGI. Entertaining and watchable.

Moneyball - I was kinda surprised, I really enjoyed it. Was a bit longer than it needed to be though, why can't directors keep films like this under 2 hours?

Melancholia - Agree with post above, you have to be in the right mood to watch it. Plus, Lars von Trier always verges on the self-indulgent. However, I thought it was great and well worth the watch. Almost think this character came a litte too easily to Kirsten Dunst though!

on saturday i watched 'taxi driver'. fucking loved it, scorsese is such a legend with a camera, and the story was really cool too. i spent the first 20 minutes or so just foaming over his film techniques.

on sunday i watched 'snow white and the huntsman'. it was shit. i didn't even know it had been made until i saw the trailer before prometheus the other week. it looked promising. i should have looked up some reviews before seeing it. the whole dark take on a classic had potential; such a shame that poor casting, a shit screenplay, over reliance on CGI and poor directing didn't fulfil it.

This.

And I thought Elephant was amazing. It wasn't polemic, it just let events unfold naturally and allowed the horror of the circumstances speak for themselves.
