Really looking forward to that weekend... Good to hear there's a second in-store as I was getting rather depressed about not being able to make it on the Thursday night.

Gosh we're getting spoilt with great music so far this year. How good is it!

After having suffered a whole year without Undercurrents, I'd have to say I'm rather looking forward to February! These Henke, Vaz and Miller people sound like the goods, too. Not that the locals aren't going to break out of the Scary Canary's cage and shit all over Bar Broadway...

I saw Magda at Glitch on Jan 2nd. Does she use Ableton live? I'm not a producer or DJ, but I reckon the Monolake demo(s) will be pretty interesting all the same!

The "teaser" video is pretty cool, but takes a long time to download (it's 66MB and the speed seemed to max out at around 38kB/sec).

MONOLAKE

Only Momentum seems to be available to preview/purchase on Finetunes, but heaps of releases are available on Beatport, the iTunes music store (where you can pay in Aussie dollars), and a German site called Yoosic.

According to the monolake.de website, Monlake and Andy Vaz will be playing live in Melbourne on February 4 and 7, so hopefully some nice reviewer for those gigs can let us know just how good it will be in Sydney when they finally arrive! :o)

ANDY VAZ

For a start, the main page of background-records.de has links to a microsite for the People Inside/Outside ep and Live in Detroit CD, which has very generous length sound samples to listen to.

The soundvariation.de site has plenty of neat sounds to soak up, including a (13MB MP3) preview of "SoundVariation 8-8". Have a poke around. :o)

Finetunes has tracks available to preview/purchase (in MP3/OGG formats):

DAVE MILLER

Seems to be the only artist in this part of the world with background reocrds (if you consider Perth to be "this part"). I found a pretty good writeup about Dave under "Dave Miller Live" on the PostEverything site, which also has writeups about Dave Miller releases they have available for purchase (also other Background Records releases). Unfortunately there aren't any track samples to preview.

Hmm... I just discovered on the Mad Racket site that Dave Miller is playing with them at the Beck's Festival Bar on Australia Day. There is also a link to Dave's website, which has samples of his releases to listen to. Yay!

A few days ago I decided that purchasing some Monolake would be a good idea. Bought a stack of releases from BeatPort and Yoosic... Beatport was FAST and allowed multiple simultaneous downloads. Yoosic was painful - semed to only allow one download at a time and was much slower ('tis in Germany, after all). I lost the ability to download one of the tracks when I first tried to do multiple downloads (still waiting to hear back from support).

But enough of the tooling about... the music is freakin' great, and I can't wait for Switchbox!

I dunno about that, mona. I kinda like finding / hearing new stuff I haven't heard before that I decide that I like. There is ALWAYS a first time.

I didn't even recognise the name Monolake until hearing it from Travis. I've listened to seven releases I bought the other night, and recognised only a single track - Fragile (appearing on Swayzak's "Groovetechnology 1.3" album which I'm quite fond of). I don't feel ashamed about not having known Monolake before, but it would be nice if I had. And I will be completely shameless seeing him perform live for the first time next weekend!

Simon Caldwell's regular gig is Mad Racket (he runs it too), but he's the darling DJ of the Sydney in-crowd (no, really!) so he had like a million and one Sydney festival gigs and he often supports the big guys, but he's also been known to play smaller nights like high jinks, glitch etc he's been around for like EVER, hence my surprise at your Caldwell cherry having just been popped. http://www.madracket.com.au/bios.html

I think he's played at High Jinx twice.. probably glitch a few times... ontop of Racket of course.. also has a few other residencies... you really would like venturing out of your little box once in a while

We recorded the set that's linked above at High-Jinks last May... happy memories of that night, truly cosmic.

This MONOLAKE stuff really is outstanding. Can't wait for next Sat. How can I make next week go faster?

When I was looking at places to rent, I was offered the place next door to the Cricketer's... decided it probably wasn't a good idea. End up living across from the Slip Inn with a nice view over Darling Harbour instead.

And yep, the 3 hour recorded set he did at High-Jinks (linked above on the Racket website) was friggin awesome, its not often you get to hear him do a 3-hour set in a town of 1-hour sets!!!
