MP3 Controllers (the Definitive thread)
1. yes i used search function
2. this is my first thread here, plz dont kill me

Ok so,
I would like to start a thread for discussing the pros and cons on units that mix mp3s and compare various units.
I personally think these devices will be a growing trend.
(not sure precisely what to call them, mp3js?)
Here are some I could find.
(perhaps you can help me think of others?)
Click on each title to find out more information

Behringer BCD2000

Good Inthemix thread here

Hercules DJ Console

Inthemix thread here

Hercules DJ Console mk2

Not sure when this is coming out here...

Numark HDMIX Hard Drive DJ Console

Numark iDJ2 Mixing Console For iPod

(delayed for Aus release till 2007)

Numark iDJ Mixing Console for iPod

Inthemix thread here
(P.S. I personally would have no interest in actually using ipods in above two mixers (hate ipod).
I still considered/added them because they can potentially use stored music through other means (USB/flash/memory sticks etc)

Kontrol DJ KDJ500

Looks fantastic imo, not sure when this is coming out here

Allen & Heath Xone 3D

Inthemix thread here

...I know im definately interested in purchasing such a device
+ some forum users here seem interested in this emerging technology trend.
looking forward to any experience/comments/warnings/feedback u guys can muster on the subject

http://faderfox.de/

these are the best units for me.

Quality components, logical functional layout, NOT USB so no drivers or stuff to go wrong.
Battery powered.
Small, so fit around any booth.

Expensive but you get what you pay for.

I'd be interested to know who actually owns any of these items. The BCD2000 seems to be the most popular as its only $250 with quite alot of features for the price tag. It works well with the included software, not so well with third-party devices.

Everything else seems overly expenisve in comparison, especially the xone3d and hdmix.
The kontrol DJ looks good, quite similar to the bcd2000 but if it works with traktor out of the box that would be a deal clincher for me. Any idea on pricing in Oz or even availability? their website was a bit rubbish. Looks like it's been out for a while in Europe but at 400Euros it's a bit pricey for me.

faderfox does look pretty cool for its purpose ...

but im after devices with a control surface resembling cdjs/vinyl
and with the same options of manipulation (scratching, mixing etc)

i love the look of the kontrol!

bcd2000 was looking really good to me for a while...

thanks heaps for mentioning that product line ekwipt!

Cortex HDC-1000

Cortex HDC-3000

HDTT-5000 - coming winter 2006/2007 (appears to be US product)

They appear to look like a large rack mount item but this side on pic shows how slim they are:

So (fortunately) looks like it can be laid down

...I saw another person interested in the BCD2000 style of djing in a thread today so hopefully this thread helps them too!

Schmick looking Cortex ad, looks tempting!

Info on the Cortex HDC-1000 :

"The HDC-1000 comes from a rather unknown brand in the DJ industry, Coretx, but offers some great features.
This unit allows DJs to manipulate music files from an external USB device, offering a lighter solution than lugging your vinyl from party to party.
The ‘intelligent music database management system” allows you to search for tracks in folders via a bright LCD screen which displays artist, track, title, time elapsed, and time remaining information.
One of the more interesting features here is that the HDC-1000 can connect up to four external devices, and no matter what the storage space or how many songs uploaded onto the devices, none of the features will slow down.
No need to abandon the CD collection either, the HDC-1000 is able to play audio CDs, CD-Rs, or DVD-Rs with any compatible USB CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive."

From here
Lots more info with Q&A here

Info on the Cortex HDC-3000 here

Lots of info on the PCDJ DAC-2 here

Very short buyer review of the PCDJ DAC-3 here

And how about one of THESE?

the Denon HD2500

"Denon has followed in the ways of Numark, Cortex, and other DJ companies as well as the average consumer’s wants and lifestyle by offering a USB driven DJ device. The DN-HD2500 is a dual (cd) HD based control unit with a USB connection and a built-in 2.5″ HD.
Unlike Pioneer who has released newer versions of the CDJ-1000MKIII and CDJ-800MKII, only adding MP3 support to cds, Denon is offering the ability to skip the cd burning process and playing straight from a hard drive, iPod, external hard drive, external PC, and more. It comes with a built-in 2.5″ HD so you’ll always have music with you.
The HD2500 has all the functionality you would expect from a dual cd player, and even allows you to connect the cd decks as well as play from the external sources. There are effects, loops, hot starts and a scratch mode. The center of the deck will have a screen allowing you to get more details about the songs you are playing as well as access the HD folders.
It’s be on display at the DJ Expo in Atlanta but not working. There is not yet any information on hard drive size, price, or availability."

for the mobile DJ that has played on rack mounts, this is a fucking god sent.

for weddings and parties it's fantastic, just get wireless broardband and download requests through the night while earning $50/hr and sucking back free drinks.

Still no one has developed a controller with full sized platters - surely Numark will do it?

Hahaha... awesome concept.

Was at a wedding a couple of weeks back. There's a mighty 4 channel DJ mixer there. And the friggin' DJ is clicking to the next tune via a laptop running Windows Media Player (or whatever).

They don't even crossfade anymore.

Nor did we hear a tune more recent than 1996. Cotton Eye Joe, anyone?

Wedding DJs can really be the worst of the worst.

HDX Hard Drive CD/MP3 Player

Those Cortex and Denon products look promising. But can anything really compete with the BCD2000? None of the other products come close to its $250 pricetag.

Full-size platters would be ace, but it would end up costing the same as 2x1200's and serato.

Love it how they compare their, which look to be normal standard dual rack mount CDplayer units with CDJs, then list the numerous amount more features like HDs and soundcard intergration.

I could'nt play on a dual rack mount, there is something about them that makes me feel un DJ like

....wouldnt mind a HDX but

I do love numark products though no matter how much other people hate them..

Yeah, all that stuff's cool but midi/usb control surface would be the balls, HDX are fine but not exactly portable like a laptop and a control surface would be... That said, CDX have midi ports - anyone up on linking midi controllers to traktor etc?
p.s. I love Numark too - but don't get PHX cans - built like the twin towers!

death to Windows Media Player/iTunes/Winamp/[insert media player application] DJs...

a guy in my uni bragged to me abt his weekend DJ jobs, which i later found out that he just brought a laptop to whoever's 21st party and played off Winamp and literally downloads requests on the spot.

this is the same guy that snubbed lots of ppl for using Macs, and later bought himself a MacBook. double x
i left my heart in Melburn.

Nope, means they're not built to last and break at the slightest bit of pressure and that the left one will break immediately after the right one - they physically broke, the adjustable bits cracked right out of the headband bit...

Thanks to Sean for pointing out more Numark products i missed:

The Numark D2 Director

The Numark HDCD1 Dual CD/MP3 Player

Also I found this;
Not exactly an audio player but i expect it could operate as such,
probably belongs in a VJ thread... still it shows the potential of the hard drive technology

The Numark NuVJ

So stupid its probably not even worth mentioning:

Gemini i-Trax
Pretty dumb imo...

where you just bring a small object in your pocket that transfers with all speakers wirelessly and projects a virtual dj deck with fully customisable features...

The numark D2 director look like it has a fish finder on the display screen, you can play tracks and locate fish, all while fishing fom the boat.

Numark, always adding versatility to thier products.

I own the Hercules unit, it was my first taste of djing.
I had a wicked time with it, i found it such a good and easy way to learn the ropes

Hercules has been superceded by pretty much every unit shown on this thread. It offers nothing extra to say, the BCD2000, and it the buttons are more likely to break on the hercules imo.

So in conclusion to my rant, dont bother with the hercules, its old news...

I bought the Behringer BCD-2000 for tooling around with at home, very happy with it.

Virtual DJ 3.2 - Fail
Virtual DJ 4.0 - Win
Traktor 2 - Fail for me, just couldn't get it to work
DJDecks - fail
Xylio - Win - Good tool, really works well with this controller, but seems to be lacking in a few area's, like cue points and especially with viewing your playlists/getting your tracks in some sort of order.

I too also tried the Hercules v1, pretty shit and I think I'd break it pretty damn easy. Mark 2, appears to be of a stronger build, plus the added bonus of 2x phono inputs too that can be used at any time with VDJ4.

The Numark Director looks like a nice piece of gear though.

As for people that would use these everyday as part of their job, well you get what you pay for in this business. I'm no Dj and don't want to be. I just like to play music and don't want to purchase cdj's or decks

Hey thanks, I've got a couple that I have sourced from around here an various other forums.

My issue is hardware related, as soon as Traktor starts up and connects to the Behringer I get the good old blue screen of death. It is about 99% likely that it's my desktop that is the issue, I'm just not ready to reload that just yet.

But if you wouldn't mind emailing it to me would be greatly appreciated, as I have heard the BCD-2000 and Traktor work a treat

your point is??

Its a cd player not an midi controller, which this thread is all about. albeit midi controllers that are designed around mp3 dj software.

thanks ekwipt I haven't seen that one before. I would expect it would retail along the same lines as the BCD2000 here in Australia. I can't see it's minimal layout satisfying my need for having lots of buttons.

I don't think that platters are a neccessary requirement on a MIDI controller. I have an old Denon rackmount dual CD player sans platter which i can beatmix fine on. I think the real downfall is the lack of customisable buttons available. The benefit of a laptop + controller is the added flexibility. I want to be able to download new filters/effects and have each one linked to a seperate button. Also you need the extra functionality of being able to change tracks via the controller trying to eliminate the need to go back and forth between the controller and keyboard and mouse.

:trucker:

Added to that perhaps LCD/Speakers - http://www.engadget.com/2005/03/25/n...kers-reviewed/ but the size of http://www.engadget.com/2005/08/31/p...lay-prototype/ that.

To create a complete DJ/VJ system, but although I've never been a DJ before I would foresee a large problem in having no 'tacitle response' unless there was some kind of cerebral connection to your brain perhaps?

Perhaps you wouldn't even need speakers, everyone had builtin headphones that you could tune to a certain wave length.. would very interesting you could simply turn the volume to 0 and look at a dj that isn't able to produce any sound.

Probably not for a while, but it does sound like an interesting concept.

I've got the BCD 2000.

Just wish I had a laptop to go with it. Wanna play house parties but don't wanna lug my computer to a mates place.

For $250, you can't beat it

Great thread, great to see the BCD going so well!

..then again most of the controllers are well above $1000!

The Allen & Heath Xone 3D is just such a nice looking unit, and from the video on google;
