Needed - veterans of the Brisbane scene
Trans:Com is thinking of a DVD project next year which aims to document the early development of the Brisbane electronic scene.

What sort of Brisbane-based electronic bands/artists/personalities/events can you recall pre-1993?

Cheers

More info...
Hi - in some cases I could use more info - maybe a claim to fame statement, and ideally a contact if you have it.

Hey Ben - drop me a direct line and we'll talk further.

Angus, Edwin and Kesson would be high on my list of pioneers -- we are talking Alarm days so 1989 onwards. Angus still remains one of the best DJs I have heard / seen (if only I could find that Angus on 3 decks tape) -- I believe he is working with a production company in Melbourne now, Edwin had some commerical success with the band 'Sexing the Cherry' whic I recall made it onto Video Hits (or whatever it was then) rotation.

pHarmacy (grant wallis / robobugging / aneiki)... The original EAS crew such as OK SUSHI (cal @ butterbeats), Jaymis, Matt n Charles from Music For Pleasure who put on events at Zen Reaktor warehouse in west end... bands like Not From There... Dejan Petrovic (subtekk) and the Analogik crew... Nil of course, being the brains of Superfluid and Nil Vs Miss Tracy... Mss Tracy herself... Scott Walker (havockkkkkk! lolz) and Rasp playing happy hardcore (rofflezzzz) and of course Jen-E... i dumped a handful of DAT tapes to cd a couple months back of her 90's happy hardcore sets, still intact... even people like Stephen Donaldson who mergered with the SF beast... Rebecca Poulson, who im not even slightly embarassed about being a big influence seeing her play live @ adventjah one year... hell even Andy Bagley @ Musiclab... lots of knowledge locked in there. People like Ben Suthers and Noel Burgess of course, AapogeE inspired people like Kris Swales and i no end (you can still google and find a Red Dog review of an Adventjah with AapogeE by Kris). Oh and the Vinyl Knickers crew. When i first moved up to Brisbane as a teenager at uni with a little sampler and a little keyboard i hung out for the monthly letter in the mail stuffed full of flyers.... and last last one (this could go on forever) would be Kath / AliaK for her enthusiasm putting on live acts at the old Mantra and of course her ahead of its time online radio show.

I was thinking a little while ago someone should do an electronic act version of the brisbane band fmaily tree Swales showed me a little while ago... its a shame live acts are such transient things... so much amazing music hidden on little EP's, obscure DAT's and lost compilations...

Hey mate,

Your best place to start is probably Col (DJ Freestyle). I am not sure about others, but Col was sober through that period (and still is). I'm sure he'd be happy to chat with you about the early days. Also, Michael Watt (promoter for Met now I think) would be a trove of information; he promoted the Tube AFAIK and some other joints.

The scene was a LOT different back then from what I hear. More territorial, more eclectic and more criminal . Interesting project if you can get it up.

Lex's article on Col avers to some of the friendly rivalry between Angus and Col back in the early days...

Peace,

Definitely. These were important nights circa 1990-1992. I remember a fair amount of Madchester influence on these, which were held variously at the Lands Office, downstairs Myer Centre (where Sizzler is now), and (I think) a pub over near the old McDonnell & East building... Metropolis was a great space as well for live stuff - I remember seeing the Volition (Severed Heads, Boxcar, Single Gun Theory) tour there, as well as The Shamen, Jesus Jones, etc.

More please...

Yep. We worked with Michael when he was at the Dome @ Milton in 1994 when we put on a showcase called Electronica (the term was relatively new back then) which had Blood Party, Sphere, the debut of Ande and 8E38, and one of the first outings of Nude Productions (now of LowKey+Nude). We released a great little cassette (!) for that one, the contents of which are on their way to iTunes shortly.

That's what makes the period so interesting and relevant. Everything happening in Brisbane now stems from these early endeavours and its important for us to get them down. The scene had far fewer pigeonholes than it has now, leading to greater diversity at single events. The ZZZ market days of the period were great fun.

When we did an event at Grand Orbit in 1995, some guy was outside the club the night before we did our event - leading to some confusion...

so many memories of the Lands Office Hotel. I think that's where my trashbaggery started

There was also Volcanic Bass down that wee alley between Queen and Adelaide St

There was a similar club thing in the basement of the Embassy for a while ... can't remember what it was called though

I'm going to pull out all my Volition 12"s now

Sorry to go off topic.. but I remember doing an interview with ZZZ once upon a time as a classical pianist (I used to perform with Qld orchestra and all that quite often) and the lady doing the interview, asked me if I listened to ‘normal’ music too She was totally blown out of the water when I said yes, my favourite band is Taxi (helped that my now husband was the hawt sax player from the band) and that I lived for my market days. She then asked but why would a classical musician be listening to alternate music? And I said, cos I like being discriminated by police and enjoy taking a walk on the dark side with rioting mobs. I did say that inspite of all the media reports at the time, I didnt actually experience the riots that was supposed to be permanently attached to market day. those really were great days. And it wasn’t because I was young and foolish!

blah blah End off topic bullsh*t

aah, sunday toss the boss @ empire downstairs when it was just a corner pub with a lounge area and tiny dancefloor, before the massive renno's, was a weekly event for me for years (*still* see a couple of familiar faces, and that was, like nearly 10 years ago)

ne1 remember Super Deluxe? or Fluent-JB spinning party tunes @ the zoo? anyone... anyone? not that long ago, I guess, but it sure feels like it.

back in the day there was a killer hiphop club on wickham street in the basement where vault/teknomad/indietemple is now but can't for the life of me remember what it was called. honeycombed brick basement rooms (yer, how underground is that!), mood lighting, street cats, stylers, b-boys and dj talent made that place so homely. can anyone remember what it was called?

*sob* i'm getting all emotional'n'shit

Lex, how did I not run into you before, inbetween all this old school galavanting? Viva was pure class (and there used to be occasional eletronic music exhibitions there with Allens, Lightsounds etc etc - they rly loved the scene!) but a pain to get to without wheels from the otherside of vegas, and Morning Glory was so, so, so messy 90% of the time. I played a very hard goa set there once at 6am to people who'd mostly arrived from a candy rave (system-6???) and the extreme twitchiness or near-unconsciousness of people on the floor was a brutal/beautiful thing to behold. :p

Pee Wee Ferris was considered "cool" (ROFL)
Urban Knights were "cool"
Biskuits were good (hmmmm maybe thats tolerance talking)
People were genuine.
"city folk" stayed in the city.

Which Berlin Bar incarnation? - there have been so many...

Try this one on: The Tunnel (Platinum Club nights) circa 89/90 in the midst of the original acid house movement. Stakker Humanoid in full effect...

A key reason to start your own label...

There used to be a thriving Wednesday night scene with Ether @ Zoo, house at the Empire (Corner Bar), or Hard Drive/Addictive at The Tube, or even The Beat....not much around to do these days on a school night

Being a goldie native at the local highschool in pre-liquor act 1992 days the tunnel was a sunday night must between 90 & 91 ... and the Freedom boat cruises and various warehouse parties such as the bouncey castle party at parklands and the one at seaworld. We used to stay at the Hub Motel on Orchid and get a cab to school on monday mornings <ouch>
acid house makes me teary as does the KLF - I remember dancing to KLF last track at Tunnel on my prom night.

I have been talking to Barking Boy who was also at those parties and Mr. Walker and just maybe at the Shammy early new year you might see some form of reunion type party celebrating the good ole days ..... that's if we all don't have a flash back first!

Sunnyside Up... the Kylie, Madonna and Rue Paul drag show was artistic briliance especially when Rue Paul came our on Roller Skates. I loved that night

Did anyone ever go to a club in the late nineties at The Brunswick on thurs nights called Monkey Business run by the people that opened the original Bitch Cafe on Brunswick?
That use to be pretty loose.

"beat me daddy"

kesson & angus are the 2 people i'd say are solely & totally responsible for me getting into vinyl & into the brisbane 'scene'... before meeting them, it was just listening to the saturday afternoon new musik show on ZzZ & being the only kid i knew who did so...

hanging out with kesson & angus @ the 'old old OLD' central station were truly ' the good old days'

only other thing to truly rate a mention is feelin freaky - fuck that was some good shit, if under-appreciated - but where else was a small girl going to go and hear some of the most wicked underground shit played by kazu 'before he got big' - with maybe 3 other people...

*sigh*
