Jurassic 5 future in doubt

Originaly posted by discocaine79:

JURASSIC 5, one of the most respected acts in hip-hop, will soon be no more, according to one of the group's founding MCs.

Soup (aka Zaakir) says the crew's future is uncertain beyond their upcoming tour of Australia and Japan, which includes a Gold Coast show at the Good Vibrations Festival, at Doug Jennings Park, on February 11.

"After the tour, that's basically it," says Soup.

"I don't want to sit here and fake around with it - we're not seeing eye-to-eye right now."

Jurassic 5 formed in Los Angeles in the early 1990s and last year released their fourth album, Feedback. They made their name with a pronounced old-school style - upbeat themes, inventive lyrics and tag-team, harmonised rhyming.

"People see us as a harmonising, loving group, but that's far from the truth," says Soup.

"I'd like to keep it going, but you can't force grown men to do what they don't want to do."

Even with the band's future in jeopardy, Soup says their legendary live shows won't suffer during what is shaping as their final tour.

"I'm hoping people are professional enough to do what they have to do. I think it'll be all right."

Online reviews of the band's recent shows in the UK are strong enough to back his confidence in the fragmenting unit.

According to Soup, members of the group are citing 'all sorts of reasons' for the likely break-up.

"Some people may say it's a creative thing, but I'm not buying it. Some might say business, some might say merchandising, whatever, there's some really stupid s*** - some really childish things - happening," he says.

He says proposed solo projects for various members of the group are also playing a part.

"When it comes down to it, some people here want their own shine, their own thing. If that's what you want, I say 'more power to you'.

"I hope it works out for you - just don't come up with lame excuses (for J5's demise)."

Communication problems are at the heart of the rift, says Soup, who never understood how bands couldn't resolve their internal struggles until he was mic-deep in his band's own.

"I though we'd be a bit better at handling it, but we're not. We're only human," he says.

"Even though we do what we do doesn't mean we're the best communicators. For certain members it's been brewing for a while - I've heard in passing there are things that could have been brought up a long time ago about how people were feeling that weren't said."

Further developments at the J5 camp, after reading that it make sense why Cut Chemist left the group and I also think there "internal struggles" and "communication problems" is reflected on Feedback.

This sucks.

IMO it's a fine time for it to end... the had their shine, they lost CC, they released a lacklustre album, it was all on the decine...but they're still coming here so folks can see 'em.... sounds like perfect timing to me.

yeah nick that's pretty much what i said in another thread about it. i mean feedback is a pretty disappointing album, so at least this way they can end and keep a pretty solid legacy rather than go on to release other sub par albums. plus now they can go on to do solo projects, look how that worked out for cut chemist, his debut was awesome

who said they should pack it in? what a load of shit.

agreed that Feedback was pretty disappointing, so was the majority of Power In Numbers really...but a couple of mediocre albums doesn't mean they should give it away.

people said the same about PUTS until they put out Stepfather and then everyone was giving props.

Well they tore it up at good vibes melb yesterday, so if it is one of the last tours it was a good one, so happy to get to see them one last time.

I don't know about this comparison...
PUTS never put out anything as weak as Feedback, and heads didn't react the way most have seemed to with J5.
imo OST was better than Power in Numbers...

i didn't see em at the gold coast good vibes gig but from the reports they had a lot of technical problems (sound completly cut out after half a song for a long time), but i did catch the free myspace secret show they did in brisbane and that was completly off the hook. They did material from all there albums and ripped the place apart.

Chali's solo album should be dropping soon and from the beats that i heard chali and akil working on when i was chilling with them, theres still life in em yet maybe we might see a revised line up yet again in the near future.

Check page 2 of the photos on my myspace page for the pieces that we did with chali the next day after the show.

As others have said it's probably a good move. I haven't really listened to any J5 since Power of Numbers, I think it was clear after that album that they weren't going to do anything to match Quality Control and their shit before that. In hindsight perhaps they should have thrown it in after Power of Numbers because by all reports the new album is shit, i heard one track off it and knew I didn't want to bother listening to it.

I saw them twice live a few years ago and they are still some of my favourite gigs, especially when Cut Chemist and Numark did all their crazy shit.
