Not so traditional and a bit more on the gourmet tip but AY Teahouse's (South Yarra) and Gingerboy's (City) Yum Cha stylings are to die for.

I take most of my artists for lunch at AY and they always love it. Salt n' Pepper Squid, Ginger Prawn Dumplings, Shredded Peking Steak, and Tofu in XO Chili Sauce are some of my favourites.

Gold Leaf in Springvale is best in Melbourne. We make the trip down there at least once a month for Yum Cha.

Prawn dumplings and fried squid are cooked to perfection.

Dragon Boat Palace in City is ok. Pretty greesy so good for a hang over. I think they do all you can eat for $15-$20 during the week.

My tip is to find the place filled with Asians eating there.

Yeah if Asians are eating there then its good. If it's full of 'whities', you're in the wrong spot.

If you don't mind paying a little extra I definately recommend Golden Dragon in Templestowe (Manningham Road). Very nice place and the food + service is top notch. Voted one of the best in Melbourne I think.

What a load of crap. Tons of white people eat at McDonalds - doesn't mean it's any good. Busy restuarants can just be busy because they're cheap, or convenient, or serve up lowest-common-denominator slop.

You obviously dont have a fucking clue when it comes to yum cha.

One thing I've learnt about Asian food is that if the place is clean and there are no Asians eating there - leave.

I dont know.

There were heaps of asians eating food in the resturants in Hong Kong and I couldn't stand the shit.

I've never been anywhere in Asia so cant comment on that.

My opinion is solely based on growing up in and around Springvale. In my experience - especially with Vietnamese food - if the place looks a little dodgy, the food is great!

Asians don't have a magic culinary critic inside them that makes them only choose high-quality restaurants to eat at. They'll eat at crappy restaurants too, just like white people or black people or whatever. Sure, i know what you mean about those "white" Chinese restaurants where they only serve sweet'n'sour pork and fried rice, but just don't expect "Asian" Chinese restaurants to necessarily be any better. They may have different stuff on the menu, but weird food doesn't always equal good food. I think soma's recommendations are good.

erm are we still talking about yum cha as the thread title suggests? i think you've gone off a on a bit of a tangent. yum cha done well is not easy to come by.

i like the one on the corner of blackburn road and high st, called royal 'something'? always packed and cheap, with the smallest serves at $3.30! sieu mai, har gow and squid all delightful.

west lake in chinatown, gold leaf in springy, the treasure in nunawading. And if you go to the treasure, ask for the icecream balls rolled in coconut flakes. ITS THE SHIT.
btw dragon boat in the vilage arcade in china town has given ppl sore stomachs so id be a little careful there.

Red emperor on SOuthbank is good, as is silky apple up on High Rd and Kooyong.

Also found a random one on Saturday - Red Door Antiques and Team House. Just off Chapel at Windsor end. You sit amongst all the antiques and order off the menu. Top draw dumplings but slightly more expensive than normal

Excuse my ignorance, but what exactly is Yumcha? I know its Asian food, but is it the method/experience in how you eat it that is unique?

Right, I just came back from Yum Cha Dragon at Docklands. A bit pricey, but well worth it.

I recommend the tiger prawns, roasted duck and squid. Yum Cha for lunch and dinner! Great service too.

WIN! http://www.yumcha.net.au/

All my friends from Hong Kong they all agreed that best yum cha in melbourne that taste like the one in Hong Kong is Tai Pan in Doncaster.

You will need to make booking if you are going on Sat / Sunday.

I just recently went to Spice Temple, Neil Perry's Chinese restaurant, at Crown and their yum cha is sensational. The best har gow I've ever had. Atmosphere is cool too and the price is much better that you would think being Neil Perry. They have only been doing it for about three weeks, I think, and will definitely give other yum cha houses a run for their money.
