The "Album Reviews" thread
This here thread is for the writers among us to post their album reviews, or links to work they've done...

And for anyone else who wishes to write up a lil review of something they've heard, this is the place to do it! Don't be shy.

KRS-One & Marley Marl - Hip Hop Lives

Those of the MTV/Channel V generation might know only of KRS-One and Marley Marl as names from the past - bygone, and gathering dust. These two heavyweights of the game, famous for their long standing beef with each other are united, still hip hop and both in their 40s. Hip Hop Lives at first seems like a wrap-up of the last 25years, with the tracks alternating between professing hip hop’s immortality to restating KRS-One as a hip hop pioneer. Whilst KRS-One’s significance to the hip hop community is not under question, the album falls a scratch short due to the fact that the one whom many hip hop artists call the embodiment of hip hop, and one of the greatest rappers to hold the mic, fails to progress hip hop forward, and KRS-One comes off sounding like a wizened scholar having a rant.
This is a review with the bar set right to the sky, just as it should be for KRS, if this was any other artist this release would have got full marks. Marley’s beats whilst not breaking new ground are tight and banging and made for Kris to shine on. Hip Hop Lives is a ‘beginners guide’ for those who think the music and culture started with Puffy, 2Pac, Jay-Z and Nelly. History will not age hip hop nor will it age Marley Marl or KRS-One.

Just read the abdominal one X, dope! Look forward to hearing it...

Is that link up there meant to be it? or is it something else. In either case it's not a proper link.

can i suggest that people list the correct artist name, release title, and label if you can, if they are posting in here; whether it is to a link or not.

Without that you can't search and it just looks like a heap of shit.

13th Son - Our Lives - Grindin

You might hear hip hop is dead, with commercial rap ruling; but to 13th Son it is as it’s always been – a way of life, living, breathing, these streets, this city. This is round two for the Sydney MC, following up on his 2006 solo album ‘The Hero’. This 16-tracker is soul-deep steamer with production duties shared between M-Phazes, Jase, Sereck, Stat-D and SDub. Cameos are also spread around and kept on the down low with spots going to Tam Morris, Fame, Trace Elements, DMinor, Spit Syndicate and Butta Verses. The album ranges from introspective moments such as ‘Mother’s Song’ and ‘Missing You’ to horn-led bangers like ‘Ladies’ that takes you for a ride in the backseat around the streets of Sydney. Homegrown metaphors pepper the material such as “I don’t make music for children, this ain’t The Wiggles, you got it upside down like Mr Squiggle”. This is a man representing the city he is from and the one we all love.

DJ Babu - The Beat Tape Vol 1 - Nature Sounds

DJ Babu from the Dilated Peoples is dropping science, 32 lessons in the art of beats. This is his debut as an instrumental album and, considering he first stepped into hip hop’s spotlight in the mid 90s as part of the World Famous Beat Junkies, well worth the wait. The album covers the full range, from head nodders, to half paced slow jams to flashing lights and siren laced bangers and shows that the boy has a palette loaded with all the colours. Think preemo and dilla, but with the distinct west-coast sound off the Peoples. The first few listens to this were done on the road, in the car, on the ipod, through shitty computer speakers – when I dropped it into the home stereo, on monitors – I thought I was listening to something altogether new – what he wrings from the bottom end is deep and fat, with the samples; whether chopped or strung-out and looped - tight. Samples at times run in parallel with Dilla’s Donuts; such as grabs from Eddie Kendricks on ‘Sound Music’ as well Babu’s ‘Dee On’ which sounds like a dub of the original from Dionne Warwick. The snapshots that Babu flashes up through the speakers are teasers, just as they are on all beat tapes, I hope some like this get fleshed out in full.

lol it isnt hard to beat. some of the hip hop events here in sydney are a joke. went to revolution last month at parramatta and half the contestants were more wack than 50 cent. there was this leb performer wearing a g-unit shirt and 2 steroid pumping lebs standing on each side of the stage as if they were gonna do something.

one of my mates on the night was nomintated for best unsigned artist at the UMA's on tuesday, and what i saw from the other nominees, nothing compared to him.

man there are crews doing good shit, they just seem to be buried - anything from Basic Equipment, Elefant & Nurcha is gonna be dope and guys like Scott Burns & Spit Syndicate are the equal of any new talent.

But yeah as a whole your fans seem fickle as fuck.

Show i went to was dope though

I guess if I have one complaint about the album it’s that, the delivery seems very one paced and can grow a little weary

I had a feeling it might run like this.. still gonna have a listen.
