Sasha - are we in the midst of something special?
i know it sounds strange that i say that cause he has been around for so long and always been rather good...

but his sets of the last two years have been nothing short of outstanding......and the thing is he just seems to get better and better...

the last couple i have downloaded...warung beach and the amnesia one are epic...

track selection is perfect...mixing is spot on...the added effects he throws in...the extra buildups...

when and how he brings the tracks in is special...

for me he has never played better...what do you think...

lol...i could go on and on...

but then you listen to his essential mix from 95, the one with 'Blue Monday' and you just shake your head in disbelief... it seems he's like the stock market... peaks and lows...

its a bull market at the moment.

Sasha's mix on Triple J last year was absolutely fucking sublime. A piece of programming that has me rubbing my crotch every time I hear it.

I vote in the affirmative

I was going to say much the same thing but add to that "with a subsequent Australian tour."

I can't help but wonder what went through Sasha's head when his Perth show was cancelled through lack of ticket sales when he rated one of his late 90's gigs here as "one of his top five best ever"?

For me, Sasha's 98-99 NYE mix at Alexandra Palace as recorded by the EM receives constant playtime on my PC and iPod.

I thought his set in 2005 @ Home was fucking crap.

But Fundacion was awesome. Looking forward to Involver 2

I thought home was ok. had its moments. His b2b with Zabiela at the end was superb.

2006 Melbourne with Digweed was the best I've seen him play in Aus. The set was almost flawless, minus the Diggers trainwreck .

Fundacion was ok, bits were awesome, others not so. His Amnesia set (Essential Mix from Cream) has its own thread, and the Warung Beach set is in the mix thread, even though its a bit old.

Yeh Trashy, u may be on to something. Actually I think he has been on song since late 2005 when he played the Home set. That was a real return to form. A couple of things behind the big improve i reckon: he has mastered Ableton, he has virtually eradicated the breaks, he has gone back to focusing on track selection and constructing meaningful progressive sets AND he is not afraid of dropping some peak time melodic prog.

Two things I don't get:

1. Trashy - u really didn't like Involver???? Yeh there's no chug but otherwise i think it was a flawless piece of programming and re-editing/remixing.

2. Wowky - I didn't think u saw any of Sasha at the 2005 Home set. If i recall correctly u were upstairs frothing over Zabeeeeeela who i thought was ave

Wowky Quote : I was too much in Zabiela & Faciulli land at that time to want to stay and watch him

One thing is for sure though - the pressure really is on him to produce something special for Involver 2...

I watched about 45 min of Sasha and decided I was bored shitless so went up to Nic & Zabs with the intetion of staying there for about an hour then coming back for more Sasha. I decided that 45 min I saw had bored me so much and Nic & James were killing it so much that I didn't want to come back

I still haven't forgiven him for being so awful at the ANU in 2002. One of the worst, most self-indulgent, most incapable sets I have ever heard.

I thought AirDrawnDagger was a wank too. Not a fan of the Involver series.

So I find it very hard to listen to his sets without having an extreme bias against him.

his dec 02 set in melb was woeful and the very reason i signed up to ITM to make that point...

wasnt he massively fucked up on coke at that point and during the time he made airdrawndagger...

re: sets ...lovely

p.s. Involver, although a bit dated, is a very solid effort. ADD has a certain timelessness about it and really grew on me throughout the years.

That warung beach is as close to the perfect set as I have ever heard, simply amazing and I haven't even listened to the 4th section yet. I missed the Sasha era really, but damn would I like to see him when he is on that kind of form.

The Diggers vs Sasha debate cannot be won, these days they do play quite different sets. However together they are the worlds which collide, and the whole universe falls to their knees to hear them.

Oh god, excuse me while I throw up.

Honestly, we wonder why prog is such a scorned genre.

I remember picking up Involver during my first ever visit to Melbourne, and listening to it nonstop for about a week afterwards.

a good friend of mine how loves techno told me that she used to listen to prog cause it was epic...tracks like underworld - dark & long...

it then went missing and crawled up its own asshole...

now the tunes have changed for the better and we are getting back to the epic era...only in a fresh and new light...so i reckon...

I can't agree with you more Sam.

Involver is one of the cleverest pieces of dance music that I have heard.

From start to finish, it is total quality.

It's not a "prog" album. Rather it's a piece of music that encapsulates what is possible with a bit of foresight and a real understanding of music.

Rather than just have a slow build, few anthems and then a trail off, Sasha actually spent time creating a piece of work that rewards you more and more, the more you listen to it. Virtually every track on the album contains lyrics, in fact there's only 1 that doesn't. Yet the lyrics actually add to the album rather than detracting from it, which is so often the case with dance music.

What was clever was that Sasha was able to pick a whole range of different tracks and re-edit or re-work them in such as way that they actually fit together.

I doubt many other artists have the ear or the ability to put together such a wonderful piece of work.

I just scored a copy of JunkieXL - Future in Computer Hell pt2, which he used on the GU comp however many decades ago... it still gets the hairs on my arms everytime - the man always knows his epicness, and for that very reason I hang out for every set that he mixes (except for that 2nd life garbage)

The Ibiza mix is one of the better mixes I've heard of his in a while. A bit harder and techier than what I'm used to from him but still retaining great melodies.

I like that he still has that epic feel going whereas Digweed seems a bit uninspiring the last few sets of his I've heard.

yer, the whole of the Warung beach is awesome (well the second part is a little crap, but hey you have to have some down time in the 5 hours or whatever it is)

thought the EM at ibiza was pretty good, but not huge. second hour is a lot better, good to see the new underworld track getting a show in, in the end

hmm...that reminds me, i wonder if any of the stuff sasha and underworld reportedly worked on for the ist involver will ever see the light of day
hang on a minute, im on the potty doing poo
