but one requires skill ... the other is a monkey pushing buttons

are CDJs turning DJs into button pressing monkeys/jukeboxes??

yeah i don't think cdj has killed the juggle, i mean the DMCs are still hells popular

cdjs have just resulted in a bunch of djs who care more about what gear they use than the tunes they play

makes me wanna break out a double copy of something and get busy !!!

oh yer .. there's a thing ... anyone here like to juggle doubles ?

I have the 'Scratch' doco as well. Every now and then I like to chuck it on to get back to the roots.

I also have the X-Ecutioners instructional DVD. It goes through track marking, cue point marking, scratching, beat juggling, patterns etc. Its pretty good.

Yeah I like to fuck around with doubles. But isnt it amazing how many people confuse juggling with back spinning? I cant yet juggle, all I can do is repeats via back spinning.

same man ... and for me it's a personal thing ... i just want to be able to do that shit. not to impress anyone but myself.

any n00b can set loop points on a CDJ ... but the timing and rhythm required to start seriously juggling beats is something i aspire to.

the first thing i worked on when i got 2 x 1200s was backspinning 2 copies

oh ye ... plus it impresses chicks no end

Some people bag his scratching saying that it's just effects. This isn't true! His rhythm when he's scratching is amazing and he integrates it into his sets perfectly.

For a start a crab sounds way different to a transform and as far as I know no efects unit is useful for doing the crab for you. Secondly I know that he does use the transform for some of his scratching but I was specifically talking about his scartching without an efx. Still awesome for a dance dj. I stand by what I said.

I wasn't saying that he doesn't often use an effects unit.I was saying that even without the effects unit, his scratching skills are good. I know my post was a bit jumbled in my moment of emotion but thats what I was getting at.

couldnt tell ya, i dunno shit about cd decks or those dvj decks, i got the whole set of TP in action, goes for about 1 hour, he plays so much good shit, even juggles at one stage, one of the best dj's going around, he mixes house using hip hop skills, and his headphone is a telephone handle, how cool is that.

yeah i understood that
i haven't seen him scratch without effects so i can't comment
my point was many of the effects he uses do all the fader work for him, cutting the sound in/out etc, so he can focus on the platter

ha! u should check out deckadance.
not only does it xfade for u (u can select the time it takes), but it will automatically match the beats, AND fade the bass in and out during the mix.

I havent really tried the feature with the right songs, but I imagine if u load in 20 tracks all with the samish tempo and starting on the first beat, u could sit there and sound like a champion without lifting a finger!

are there any other proggies that do this?

What is this transform effect u speak of? Does it chop the sound in time with the music?

It's an effect on the EFX-1000 (and some mixers with effects units built in) which as you say, yes, chops the music at a specified rate. You can choose the rate and it just chops the sound at that rate.

I think you'll find he uses the transform so he can focus on adding effects with his other hand which is now free from needing to use the fader. The only effect he uses that does the fader work for him is the transform. The rest of the effects simply add some fucking cool shit to the scratch sound.

"a new kind of global sound"... LOL, i have no idea but the big guys a star

"Afrika Islam and Westbam had created a new kind of global sound. Afrika Islams DJ performance is unique. Very often, he works with 50 to 60 albums in a two hour performance. His mastery of presenting techno sound a la Hip Hop style is behind his incredible success in many clubs all over Europe."

That's basically what i said
my point still stands

good scratching technique sounds stupid good on it's own
pushin the platter back n forth and using effects to make it sound good is lame

Calling JZ lame from behind a keyboard while the guy goes out there and blows off roof after roof night after night - the crowd ALWAYS goes wild when JZ cuts it up so don't be jealous haters.

Maybe this is the thread where tbd shows us a vid of him ripping it up with some non-lame scratching so we know what to look for.

No one is doubting whether he can cut or not. It was more about his cdj skeels.

Also, I think its probably a little strange to compare scratching from a hip hop DJ's perspective, where it is a integral part of the whole idea, versus being a house dj that scratches.

Anyways *shrug*

I didn't call him lame
i said doing something very specific was lame
you could teach that method to someone in ten minutes

i didn't say zabs didn't have any skills at all
what i said was true
deal with it

the crowd goes wild when Bob Sinclair sings too, that doesn't make it right

Absolutely.

I never said JZ was better than Qbert, but I still think the guy has an ingenious method of scratching for his style of music.

Post your favourite battle record!

Hee Haw Breaks (no gaps between the samples taught me to be tight and precise with the cuts)
Rectangles ultimate battle weapon no 5 (for the Luck vs skill tone, best for transforming, ever)

how funny, that being a dj these days has nothing to do with turntable technique, be that a platter or a jog wheel... from what I've read here that definately seems to be a common theme in this thread anyway.

I can't believe how many of you can't scratch!! It's as simple or as complicated as you want it to be..

If you cue up the first beat, like someone here said, and drop it in with the fader, duwwa duwwa.. so easy..

i learned to scratch on crappy belt driven poo things before I even knew what beat mixing on 1200's was, I never knew you could dj without knowing how to cut a beat.. I repeat, how funny.. almost amazing!

What about mixers? I'm sure we all would love to use a high end battle mixer like an allen and heath xone:02, but what mixer do you use? I have a stanton sk2-f with the optical feather fader. Its funny when someone else comes and tries to use it and it skates all over the place, or the set it to the middle so they can mix with levels and I will walk past and blow it to one side and they give up haha.

i need a new mixer, i have vestax a vmc004 but when i upgraded the fader to the pcv fader the cross fader curve stopped working

the advantage though is when i go out and play on a mixer that i can adjust the curve on it's like scratching in bullet time or something
that gusface grillah site is amazing
