Something very interesting that i discovered last week, for those of you that crave the 'analogue desk' sound... Acusticaudio's Nebula.
Sadly atm it's only PC VST...

http://www.acusticaudio.net/

In short - it's a distortion modelling engine - similar to convolution, but FAR more detailed (rather than taking a single impulse, it takes a very extended, DYNAMIC impulse - meaning that distortion is modelled far better). It means that classic EQs and compressors (and reverbs etc) can sound much closer to the real thing.

The full version isn't free, but you can download the free version, which includes about 500mb of samples. There are two plugins included Nebula Reverb and Nebula.
The Reverb plugin adds alot of latency, and even for the regular plugin, there's a fair bit of latency, so you'll need a host with PDC.

The standouts in this for me (and my very minimal, 20 minutes of checking), were the high shelf and on of the reverbs. I only downloaded one of the sample packs though. From memory there may be a moog filter as one sampled EQ also...?

If you don't have a decent EQ or compressor (or just want another flavour), maybe check this out!

WARNING: Nebula is very resource hungry. The plus side is that these are some damn nice emulations!

the uno is a fat sounding plugin.its has a nice loud sound.
even though its digital you can get some nice grimey analogue madness from it.

i havent tried the new version yet but ill give it a go tonight i think.

And some overlooked gems
Retro Delay (my go to delay is freeware.)

http://www.e-phonic.com/plugins/retrodelay.php

Drumatic3, a virtual-analouge drum synth with a good serving of bells and most whistles. Tweakable as.

http://www.e-phonic.com/plugins/drumatic3.php

and if nobody's mentioned it yet, e-phonic.com is well worth a trawl for quality freebies with no gammon signups.

http://krakli.wordpress.com/krakli-free-synths/ <bit hit and miss but there's gold there too if you dig.

CM have just released a plugin special... Dont know if its already mentioned but worth a look if your a cheap bastard like me!

The Computer Music Specials team have spent months on a search-and-test mission to hunt down the best freeware out there right now. The result is this bang-up-to-date collection of stunning synths and samplers, cutting-edge effects, amazing amp sims and emulations, essential sequencers and utilities and more! There are even two exclusive synth versions you wont find anywhere else, courtesy of Krakli Software and HG Fortune.

Inside the magazine all the software is catalogued for your easy reference, with essential guides and step-by-step tutorials to get you up and running fast. And for newcomers to desktop music production, theres a beginners guide showing how to create a complete track from start to finish using the free software supplied on the disc.

If you havent used freeware in the past youll be surprised - a lot of this stuff is every bit as good as expensive commercial-ware. And CM have made it easy for you by sorting out the best offerings from the thousands of applications available to download. All the hard work of searching and testing has been done for you, so you can get straight down to making music!

CM Special vol. 30: The best free plug-ins ever! On sale now in the UK from selected WH Smith, Borders and good independent newsagents.
Online from http://www.myfavouritemagazines.co.u...re.asp?sid=551
Overseas availability coming soon - watch this space.

There are tutorials in the mag for people who need some help to...

Sure does! GSnap is an Autotune clone and I basically just use it these days, and I have a bought Autotune! Loads faster and does most of the stuff anyway! They even cloned the interface.

sounds great, and quite close to the original (barring sweeps and the like).

have been playin around with it, but have noticed the tempo of the LFO doesn't sync properly with the global BPM.

shame it doesn't have portamento, but nor does the orig - but apart from that, very nice plugin.

^Yeah I have been playing around with it too. Seriously nice sounds and there are also some good exra preset banks on the website.

It is certainly a great intro too for anyone trying to learn synthesis.

That and the TAL Bassline are awesome.

Amazing! This is the best thread about free plugs that i have ever seen.
I tried some years ago and found them not reliable and bad sounding....but now u can actually get a lot of professional plug-ins for free.

antares, who released one of the original auto tune programs, have put a few of their legacy products up for free download, including their filter unit which is frigging awesome and the old version of auto tune. i gather they did this because they couldn't be arsed re-writing them for vista compatibility - so the downside is that they might not work 100% all the time (filter crashes cubase occasionally for me) but the upside is that these retailed for hundreds a couple of years ago and are definitely worth a punt for free.

Everyone prob knows this already but the Arturia Jupiter VST is available for free with the only restriction being that you cant save presets (sounds created within projects will still retain settings when saved )
