Wanky DJ Posuer photos
i just had a look at a DJs myspace site (they're aussie ... but i shan't say anymore) and most of his top friends was composed of other DJs and their wanky posuer DJ photos

what's with myspace (and media in general) and wankathon DJ promo shots?

it gets worse when you look at their albums and they're chock full of nothing but pics of them behind the decks ... or posing with records ... or headphones .. or club shots where you're supposed to believe there's a crowd going mad in front of them (but you don't actually get to see them)

do you have some?

why ?

For fucksake get over yourself and your stupid jealousy mate. Seriously, stop stressing so much about everyone else enjoying their lives and their choice to be DJs. Your policy of a stir-up thread per week on here just shows how freakin insecure you are about your place in the scene. Get a life

I don't see the difference between putting a Dj putting a shot of him/her mixing at a club compared to a pro skater putting a pic of him pulling off the perfect kick flip.. if it's what they enjoy to do then why not share it with other people...

a shot of a pro skater is slightly different though, isn't it? that photo is showing what he can do as a skater. a photo of a dj posing with a record or looking cool with headphones on isn't showing what he or she can do as a dj.

i don't mind photos of djs that are simply mixing or in a club, because that's a part of their life. but you see some pics where it's all about image...BORING! I'm more interested in the tunes you spin...

funke...post some examples of wanky dj images!!

Yeh sorry I meant pictures of them mixing not posing nude with a record covering the crown jewels

For instance something like this is fine I reckon.

Well my took a heap of shots in brown alley for the sole purpose of a myspace profile picture. I think having a visual identity and well set out profile including a good photo is pretty important... I think a lot of other dj's would agree... some might pull it off some might not... if so i don't really care anyway.. It's their myspace so they can do whatever they want to it.. anyways.. the more dj's that look like wankers the better I look... i think

Ummm...Because most Djs use myspace as self promotion tool. Like a C.V. It's a prereq these days when dealing with new promoters...

Yes, as far as C.V.s go I do...it makes it stand out above the rest...and shows your genuine in your intentions...it also makes it look more professional...

A demo is prereq also...that's why you have a link to them on myspace...as well as your gig itenery and upcoming featured events...

I use myspace for promotional reasons only...I only have fellow djs and promoters as friends...I use it purely as a business tool for future gigs and keeping in contact with promoters and djs...for friends and family I use other sites...

true?

i've been receiving a few resumes at work recently for upcoming positions ... and funnily enough not single one has had a photo attached ... clearly they aren't very professional

geez man chill out.... he has a very valid point! it's just like giving a demo on a disc with a cool printed graphic with your contact details clearly there instead of a cd with your barley legible name scribbled with a texta.... it WILL work in your favour better than the latter. I've read heaps of c.v tip guides that suggest doing that for that very reason and i have recieved cv's before with photos and they do stand out more than the rest... wether they are the right applicant or not it will stand out because of the photo which is an advantage.

I've had a photo shoot done. I had a promoter pay for it so why not? She uses them for flyers etc. Having decent photos just makes you look professional, maybe you have to realise that djing is a business and you can't get by just having the best mixing skills. Look at any big dj and I guarantee you they have 'glamour' shots. Do you really think just handing in a demo is going to get you to the top? NO.

Funkedub you have your own website and mailing list...and you think having photos of yourself is wanky? haha. Why don't you just focus on what you're doing instead of bitching on a forum about what others do.

Funke did you decide you were done stirring the breaks forum and wanted to have a go in here?

Fuck's sake man, the amount you stir the shit out of and "hold a mirror up to" (remember that one?) the scene one wonders why you bother to be in it in the first place.

I've got nothing against promo photos - I think they're necessary to be honest. But I do prefer the more normal looking ones where they're smiling or whatever rather than trying to look like a hard ****.

i have a cheap ass domain with a home made website ... the mailing list is a sham. having a presence on the web is hardly a wank ... it just looks more "professional" than a myspace account

i'm not oblivious to the fact people are sucked into the mind set that glamour shots make you look "professional"

On the flipside of the coin some of the artists i respect the most don't buy into the notion of needing to pose for the camera and plaster it where ever possible to get done what they like to do and garner the respect of their peers.

one of the most respected dubstep producers of the moment (Burial) doesn't even tell many people what he does ... only a handful of his mates actually know he produces music that's taken the world by storm ... no chance of finding a photo of him anywhere. does it detract from his professionalism? hardly.

another example i'd cite would be the KLF. One of the biggest hits they ever made featured their beat up old car in the film clip and on the single cover .... the lads themselves were nowhere to be seen ... then again these guys also burnt a million quid and quite firmly said "fuk you" to the music industry by doing thrash metal version of 3AM Eternal at the Brit Awards. do they come across as less professional?

What intrigues me about the responses in this thread is some people's staunch belief that these kind of photos are an indicator or professionalism (according to who/what?) and are an integral and mandatory tool for being a successful DJ

It's like looking at a bunch of records ... do you think those album covers with the artist's face staring back at you are more professional than the white label in the plain sleeve? If so, why?

i really don't care if my threads put some people's noses out of shape ... at least i call it as i see it instead of touting the same opinion as the next yes man and contributing to the homogeny that DJ culture can be at times

it's only perceived as shit stirring by some because they don't like what they read ... i'm pretty confident there are people share my opinions ... but as far as things go around here ... the squeaky wheel gets the oil

it's not like i'm being offensive

Fuck you're edgy and cool. Avante garde even.

The problem isn't whether your opinion is different to everyone else's (I dare say pretty much everyone in here has differing opinions about things), it's the fact that you come across as a petulent little child throwing a tantrum to get some attention. It's like you love being a pain in the arse. And on top of that, you come across as elitist and holding a "more underground and holier than thou" attitude. I'm sure you're a great guy in real life, but seriously, the shit stirring is getting old man (and coming from me, that says a lot, cos I enjoy shit stirring on the odd occasion too)

there's 4 threads out of 50 i can see on the whole page i can count that i have started

i wouldn't say it's not the frequency of my threads but the content that makes you remember them.

Often the responses to some of the ideas i put forward really do highlight how people would rather be reading about headphone choice and back slapping rather than having a look (and a laugh) at the culture they are part of

DJing = serious business

i'm not underground ... i just do what i do and people decide to label me thusly.

Maybe some posters here could ask yourselves why this is so, instead of complaining about the themes of the threads i start ... but i do understand it's easier to have a whinge and a swipe at some one because they have offended your sensibilities.

I enjoy a good Funke thread.
We need more pot stirrers and less stirrees.

I think this thread would have went down better in CAP, seems it's a little too personal in the booth.

I think what Funkedub is trying to say with all his threads is that some people take DJing too seriously... i think.
There is pleasure in the pathless woods,
There is a rapture on the lonely shore,
There is society, where none intrudes,
By the deep sea, and music in its roar:
I love not man the less, but Nature more.... Lord Byron

I disagree. I just think Funkedub expresses his opinion (perhaps not done in the most gentle manner) and it just happens to be an opinion many others disagree with. Whilst I don't neceasarily agree with the manner with which he expresses his opinion, I do agree at times with what he says.
There is pleasure in the pathless woods,
There is a rapture on the lonely shore,
There is society, where none intrudes,
By the deep sea, and music in its roar:
I love not man the less, but Nature more.... Lord Byron
