ITM forums vs Free Speech...

Funkedub - post whatever you like (within the mod rules). Your posts certainly stimulate lively discussion, both on and off-topic.

People who don't like Funkedub (the player) or his posts (the ball) - here's an idea - don't read them.

Easy now...

I was just reading this on the radio1 website and thought it might be applicable here...

Photos are tricky things. Most people find the whole business pretty embarrassing but it can be fun if you put a bit of effort in before the shoot.

As with everything to do with image, many people aren't very comfortable with the concept, but it's part of selling yourselves.

Image is important in this industry and it's something you'll have to think about sooner or later. If you don't, someone else will. Developing a strong idea of how you want to come across, and how to get what you want, can help you keep control of the way you're presented later on.

Remember, nobody ever said "this is the best picture I've ever seen, we must sign them immediately!" Or "who are these mingers? There's no way we're picking them up!" But sending a photo that doesn't show four people standing in a car park or sitting around a pub table waving pints at the cameraman shows that you've got a bit more imagination than most.

To get some ideas, we went to Martyn Goodacre, a man who has photographed many a music legend in his time and is probably best known to most of us for his iconic NME covershot of Kurt Cobain.

"A photo shoot can be an embarrassing process - but only if you allow it to be. It is a vital part of being a performer so it needs careful attention.

"The first mistake you can make is to think you are just a musician and a photo shoot is an unnecessary evil. With that approach you could be in grave danger of looking stupid or boring or both.

"It's one of those things that you often have to learn by finding out what not to do. It's worth putting in the effort, so that when someone wants to take your picture for publication in a magazine, you know how to come across well.

"If you can find somebody who has the gear, maybe a photography student looking for something to fill up their portfolio, it shouldn't cost.

"Planning is most important. Where do you want to be? Think about the light and don't rely on the photographer to come up with ideas unless you've hired a professional.

"It's often a good idea to look at how others have tackled the problem of turning a bunch of scruffy musicians into something that has interest and appeal. Have a look through some magazines for ideas on how you could do it."

I find the whole photo thing really painful myself.. I'm not all that comfortable in front of the camera sometimes. It's so to come off looking like a dick in a photo. The last photo shoot I did was with some other DJ's (on the cover of 3D World magazine this week actually) it was quite fun then, we had a few beers & loosened up, had water thown all over us & ended up having a good old laugh. It's good to have a professional behind the camera with an idea that can give you really good direction.

It's ironic to fall across this thread now ...

I'm DJ'ing in Darwin this wkd and in order to prep for my stint in Ibiza I felt it was time to get some press shots done. Lucky for me the club owner is a professional photographer so will be taking full advantage of this on Friday for a professional photo shoot.

I so agree with you Ben ... I'm pretty certain I am going to look and feel like a complete idiot during the whole process. I've known for years I can't smile for shit and if I pose smile too long I get this god-awful curl in my lip and do a great job of blinking EVERY time the flash goes off and well I don't really have any clear sense of style hahahaha ... should be interesting.

But on topic ...

In a superficial environment in the music/entertainment industry image is absolutely everything. Sure there are plenty of DJs with wanky photos as promo shots (potentially I may end up with wanky photos after Friday's shoot ) but when you get it right and are on the mark this level of professionalism makes an immense difference.

Good promo shots (as mentioned somewhere in this thread previously) can enable a promoter to see beyond just the scope of your talent and determine just how marketable you are as a package. You can end up doing yourself a great disservice in the long run by not paying attention to the details like this

ok so; I had said photo shoot on the weekend and based on the response I've had from posting some of them up on Facebook about 2hrs ago I figured what the hell, I may as well post a few up in this thread too. These are just a few of them but have heaps more to choose from too.

I've had a wicked reaction from a promoter friend in Ibiza that have said these images will take me a long way in the International scene.

That's pretty much answering the question about whether good promo pics are worth it or not in my books.

depends what your goals are

there's some gross generalisations going on in this thread about needing an image to succeed

image probably ... posuer photos ... not

This is DJing ... it's not rock n roll

i call bollox on all of this ... this is a contruct of the new wave of DJ culture and adds nothing to the culture of any value ... apart from some eye candy

Let me pose this question to all reading this thread ...

punters/DJ : do you think better of an artist based on their media promo shots ? Which ones have stood out to you and why ?? Have you ignored a DJ until you saw their photo?

promoters ... have you ever declined having a DJ on the bill based on their promo photos?

DJs: why do you feel obliged to succumb to these media ploys when so many make the call "it's all about the music" ?

answers on the back of a post card and mailed to DJmag ... or Mixmag ...

.... why do you think DJs succumb to the media ploys?? Wtf is a media ploy anyway ....

Media is a marketing tool. Why would you openly choose not to utilise the media as a way of marketing yourself considering half the point is being able to do what you love ... and in order to do so you need to market yourself to get more gigs to do what you love and to share it with as many people as possible ... hence the need to use ... urm ... media!

Doing those things that make people take notice of you is why you do it. So what if it takes a picture to grab the attention of a promoter .... ultimately they are not going to book you if you don't have the talent to back it up.

They're quite nice pics Ange

I say if it feels good do it...

I've never really bothered but got asked to get something done for an event.... Someone had taken the work SLR camera i'd planned to use on my lunch break... So I ended up using my N95 camera

Best one we got rubbed up in photoshop is:

Doing the World's Greatest Shave about a week before the event so won't have much hair when I play...

So the masked man of mystique angle is less contrived?

come on man, marketing is marketing
regardless of how cynical the image projected is it's still an image

why do record collectors who don't consider themselves djs skin cats at all?

the "masked man of mystique angle" is not about mystique as you infer .. it's about where the focus is ... or is not

marketing is marketing ? well soap is soap ... peas are peas ... i could go on ... as i said, i'm not against marketing.

The image one chooses to project can be manifested in many different ways ... i appreciate those who choose not to travel the main road (stream) and look for more innovative and creative ways to establish their image. I've often found this is reflected in their creative output as well ... be it produced tracks or Dj mixes.

this cat is being skinned because it's a fun thing to do. i like being asked to mix tunes at places and events. I also like to consider myself as a non-generic version of the species. And to that end i see no need to pose with a set of headphones or records so promoters can see my face doesn't look like a smashed crab in the vain hope it will help me get a gig.

once again ... it's not photos and marketing i'm decrying .... it's the tedious posuer nature of a considerable proportion of photos that has became a penchant for some DJs to concentrate on and consequently giving the illusion it's de rigueur in order to get anyway within the culture

btw ... why dont we see people posing with CDs or CDJs as much as records?
