Saturday: 12.01km

Today:
Squats 3x65, 3x72.5, 6x82.5. I reset my squats because I wasn't improving any more.
Press 3x30, 3x32.5, 5x37.5, 5x5x30
5.06km on the treadmill to make up for missing a run yesterday. Running on the treadmill sucks.

30km in the last week, first week back for some time.

Every day I'm paddling, paddling.

Tonight - kayak - 4.50km.

Will post Garmim day when I'm home.

Things to note;
Winds were southerly so we paddled out to sea then back into the beach x 3.
What this also meant was that I paddled out past the rock wall I was too scared to go to on Saturday, not once but 3 times.
Tipped myself at the end and practiced getting back in.

Ran into the squad guys towards the end, had a quick chat to the coach, he told me that my issue at the moment is that I don't believe in my own ability.

Great session, good confidence builder. That said I'm rather stuffed after 3 days of paddling in a row & this was the longest session.

You'd just hate & love that guy all at the same time.

We were running up a hill in Sydney a few weeks ago, a bit worse for wear on a Sunday morning. Some guy in a packed car, obviously on their way home, yelled "HOW GOOD IS RUNNING ON A SUNDAY?!".

Yesterday went for a 30 min walk/run. Wasn't going to but I passed a woman jogger with such a determined look on her face when I went to post mail, and got hyped up for a run. I can confirm I also wore a singlet. I wear singlets 99.9% of the time since Spring. The singlets wear me.

Then did squats and lunges, and half of my shoulder routine.

Bought this barbell pad from ebay for $4. Can now practice cleans without having to worry about smashing my teeth or chin, and feeling something softer on your neck makes the gag reflex more tolerable. Also no more chafing my workout clothes.

Well that's the whole point, practice makes perfect. In the meantime, while I haven't yet developed the muscle memory to perform hang/squat cleans perfectly, I would like to keep all of my teeth so I can still eat steaks.

It's hard to judge how much strength you need in such an explosive movement, specially when you are already fatigued, and then you are s'posed to let the bar roll onto just your fingertips at the catch.


I see so many people perform cleans wrong. Like they just reverse-bicep curl or upright row the bar upwards. I don't think it's because they haven't been instructed in the correct way, it's just that it feels safer curling/rowing the bar up.

A year ago I think I injured a back muscle in the shrug part of a clean. I felt a very sharp, pulsating hot pain somewhere in my upper back so I've been very cautious ever since.

Day 3 of getting HUUUUGE

Squats - lower back hurts , i don't know what i'm doing wrong, i stretched hamstrings for like 10 mins before + ran on the treadmill for a bit, I will post a vid up if anyone cares,

DB Bench - solid
Rows - getting solid
Curls - felt gay, but solid
Abs - 10 mins, assorted BS

Heavy squats do hit your lower back. Just focus on your form and maintain your arch as much as you can at the bottom of the lift and the way back up.

All i'm trying is "big chest, look forward, keep arch in back, keep torso tight, ...go down like sitting on a toilet........big chest and drive through the heels"

A lot of it is really about foot position. Make sure your feet are wide enough but not too wide, angled appropriately and keep your knees tracking in line with feet. The rest should sort itself out. I usually go deep enough that my calves tough my hamstrings.

It's hard to judge how much strength you need in such an explosive movement, specially when you are already fatigued, and then you are s'posed to let the bar roll onto just your fingertips at the catch.


I see so many people perform cleans wrong. Like they just reverse-bicep curl or upright row the bar upwards. I don't think it's because they haven't been instructed in the correct way, it's just that it feels safer curling/rowing the bar up.

A year ago I think I injured a back muscle in the shrug part of a clean. I felt a very sharp, pulsating hot pain somewhere in my upper back so I've been very cautious ever since.

Sounds like you are trying to pull the bar too high

Pull it to nips for a power clean and belly button for full clean
