Yes they are, but thats the idea of them. There's less padding and more flexibility so the muscles in your feet are more active than in a normal running shoes and can feel the track more and hence adjust more to the surface. I get no shin splints since running in them.
There is pleasure in the pathless woods,
There is a rapture on the lonely shore,
There is society, where none intrudes,

I really like the nike frees, they're very comfortable shoes, great everyday shoes as well as running shoes. I haven't had any shin pain since I started stretching afterwards, so I think that's helped a lot.

Just about to register for the City2Surf and start training shortly to build up to it.

Need to change my joggers from Nike Air Structure Triax 10 to some ASICS Gel NImbus 12 as I get severe pain on the outer of my left foot after 5km or so. Most likely get them from ebay...

What do people think of the standard training program? Currently (for those that know the inner west) I do the bay run which is about 7km every Sunday morning.

Up the strength training and ditch on of the runs IMO.

the runners world smart coach app is pretty cool and it is free, doesn't have a training plan for 14km but I'd just train for the half or the 10k

I agree - great little app.

Definitely add some hill training in though - apparently there is a killer hill in the C2S.

edit: Just noticed there are 15k & 16k options on that app.

Signed up for City to Surf, despite hating running and being a footballer only (outdoors and futsal). Just invested in some Mizuno Wave Nirvana 7. Apparently suited to front striking clowns such as myself.... this could get interesting.

Not at this stage. I only plan to do a few more and would like to do different courses. With the bridge crossing, Sydney is a nice course, but it's got too many hairpin bends to be fast. I highly recommend it though!

Question: How many km's do you use your shoes for before getting a new pair?

I've only just started keeping a log of km's run and walked, and I estimate I run about 200km and walk about 150km in my Kayano's before getting a new pair. I get a new pair every 3 months. Previously I would only swap my shoes twice a year, and I definitely noticed my knees giving me issues at the end of a shoes life. Now I feel like, if anything, I'm changing my shoes too regularly, but I never seem to have knee pain which I think makes it worth it.

Do you keep a running shoe diary? How often do you change pairs?

I change every 500km, I have a garmin that tracks all my runs and I put a note on the first run in new shoes. Depends on your running style as to how quickly you wear them down though.

There's a really good article in the Good Weekend section of The Age today (& SMH too I imagine) about running shoes & the trend towards minimalism.

Notes:

Heel height on modern running shoes encourages tighter calves & achilles, causing foot problems.

Over cushioning prevents the foot from strengthening itself & learning to HTFU.

Orthotics are then prescribed to overcome the resulting problems, causing further leg & foot weakness.

Shin splints are related to heel striking.

A tight arse is the sign of a correct running form - you should be using your glutes. Leaning forward slightly without bending at the waist helps to achieve this.

Low bar squatting trains you to use your arse.

Heavy (for me) squats earlier this week definitely made me aware of using glutes in an easy run the next day. You may be on to something.

I've noticed that when I'm running hills or a fair bit faster, my glutes are engaged more than at a slower pace.

A proximally confused gypsy from Sydney's Northern Beaches has just ran the fastest time ever in the Herp Derp Marathon while apparently wearing the shoes of another competitor.

That debate been going for a while, with strong arguments on both sides.

A mate lent me 'Born To Run' by Christopher McDougall which convinced him to get into minimalist running. Haven't read the book yet but here's what it's about:

I've read the book, it's worth a read even if you don't subscribe to the minimalist running idea.

I was thinking about getting a pair of the merrells after I wear out my current shoes. Is there much difference between the trails, trues & sonics?

Wow 40% off!
And aircon - so because they're hard to get on, does that mean they stay put? I run in knee-high footy socks at the moment which is good for the first few kms, then they start sliding down

Cheers guys!

Too much temptation to take it easy if I don't time my runs.

In other news, I took the plunge and bought myself a pair of Trail Gloves as well. Will report back.
