Cider/Perry (local and import) thread
I've been getting into the cider a lot more recently.

Interested to see who else is a fan.

Preferred local drops for me:
Little creatures pipsqueak cider
Mercury Draught cider
Coldstream cider

I'm also interested to try out some Perry (pear cider) anyone have any recommendations?

Pipsqueak is ok, but I still prefer Bulmers (Magners). They do a pear cider too.

I like the Mercury dry as a session drink- the others are a bit sweet. If you like Mercury draught as a regular session drink, try some of their Artisan cider- it's their premium drop and very nice it is too.

In my student days in NZ we used to regularly drink Harvest (the main local cider brand) Scrumpy- it was about 8% alcohol and sold for about $6.70 per 1.25L flagon. One flagon would get you well primed for a big night- two incurred a serious risk of waking up the next day with a blinding hangover and only vague memories of the previous night involving sitting on some bloke's lap at the local gay bar!!!

The last effort of a carton of mercury draught + carton of coopers sparkling and a bottle of raspberry cordial involved someone jumping off my mates roof and my mate doing a nudie run down his street

Is the Magner's Perry available at most supermarket bottl'os?

I am in need of a bit of a change myself so I might well get into the ciders next payday.

My folks live in Bridgetown (W.Aus) & they have a great Cidery down there, called "The Cidery" funnily enough! I love the Scudamore Scrumpy or the Spider Cider. There's another cidery in Capel that does a couple of nice ones too.
Mmm cider!

I tasted some interesting cider in Orange recently - Small Acres Cyder it was called. Their orchard is quite small so not sure if you can get it in the city, but it was a really interesting flat, dry, table-style cider. We are going to roast up some pork in a couple of weeks to match the cyder.

The Cider Thread
Forget Strongbow for a minute, that stuff is getting flavourless. I'm talking real Cider.

Lately I'm into Magnyers, Bulmers, Scrumpy Jack. Anything that has a different taste to it.

I find myself scouring dan murphy's and various bottle shops to see if there is something I haven't tried.

Anybody got anything they have found overseas that they can't get a hold of here or know where to get it.

If you are talking real cider, then why are you talking about Magners?

French Cidre Bouche is the best cider, imo.

the non-alcoholic cascade one is awesome. ('cept for the lack of alcohol)

but I'm looking for a good aussie one that is easily available, any suggestions? I'm sure we can do cider better than the pommies.

depends how much you want to spend.

For the price, can't go past Mercury Draught (source: any dan murphys)

Mercury artisan is very nice, but more expensive.

Coldstream cider is excellent, but it's even hard to find in Victoria unless you drive out there.

you could find a nicer pub? My local has Pipsqueak on tap.

(not that I drink it, considering if I ask nicely they will go and get me some cidre bouche from the attached restaurant)

I had a closer look at the three oaks cider label.

Vok Beverages ... Salisbury South.

This stuff is made by a client of mine, Bickfords. Bastards never told me they were making a cider. Next time I am there I might look through their product structure and routings to see how they make it.

try Mercury artisan, i put a tonne of ice in the first one, but put the rest in the freezer as it killed the taste.

super cold from the freezer = win.

Was at the bottlo and couldn't decide Mercury and Gaymers (which they had for $10 for a 4 pack). Didn't want to risk getting something that I might not like (gaymers) so stuck with the Mercury which I've had before?

For next time, Mercury or Gaymers????

Just got back from my local, they have a new cider behind the bar, in bottles.

The best in Australia. Easily. This shits on Artisan or other local Aussie ciders I have tasted, and is made in the same mould as the French Cidre Bouche styles.

Lobo Cider. For the Win.
