Burlesque in Sydney
I am fascinated by burlesque, do you know anywhere i can see it in sydney?
People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks. Years later, a doctor will tell me that I have an I.Q. of 48 and am what some people call mentally retarded.

keep an eye on upcoming events at http://www.sugartime.com.au/

and http://www.myspace.com/34b_burlesque

this one is next week:

if you notice the 'tenderloins' brand/website on stuff it's an indicator that it's got a kind of punky contemporary twist. they've done shows like 'robot strippers 2000' and 'good drugs, bad women' - where as sugartime are probably a bit more traditional int heir approach.

Also keep and eye on http://www.jacbowie.com/ She does a lot of Burlesue Shows.

Hey Hungry, myself, Trajik and my gf will be going to one soon. Let me know if you want in and we'll get a posse together. Lot's of burlesque around. The good ones have other performers as well, such as the birdman, which is good entertainment value.

Datakid that looks wicked - thanks!

Weirdest Burlesque i've ever seen was in Toronto at Easter, it was aptly named Biblical Burlesque with such content as Jesus getting a blow job whilst on the cross... I didn't know whether to laugh or start praying for my soul!

If anything changes I'll let y'all know.

By coincidence this is what is launching on 12th September @ Favela...

Friday nights at Favela are to receive an uplift of stunning, seductive, vintage glamour. Launching on Friday 12th September is Sydney's hottest new burlesque experience act 'Dirty Pretty Jewels'.

Dressed in exotic and elaborate costumes the four professional dancers will give three flamboyant, intoxicating cabaret-style shows throughout the course of the evening.

The intimate downstairs area will be transformed into a stunning burlesque club
serving a tantalizing all you can eat churrasco feast and cocktails with an ambiance reminiscent of 1920's seductive glamour.

'Dirty Pretty Jewels' will be performing each Friday at Sydneys hotspot Favela. Dynamically arranged music, dramatic lighting displays and waiting staff kitted out in burlesque attire will complete the 1920's cabaret feel to the evening.

These incredible girls and their unique style of entertainment each Friday is not to be missed!

Bookings are essential to guarantee seating and inclusion in the Burlesque experience shows.

Im sure it is seductive and the girls do look hot - but burlesque just isnt about sexy women for me its about the show, it has to be creative and have an element of humour.. I can go see sexy women anywhere

Suzie Qu, look at the clothes, etc. Doesn't give off much of a burleque vibe if you ask me. I could be wrong, but the marketing is an insta-fail to the seasoned burlesque/rockabilly crowd.

Also, you wouldn't happen to be the same suzie qu burlesque performer?

The girls make their living from doing classy burlesque. Just at a guess i'd say they know more about it than those people dissing their promotional shot. which portrays their show how they wish it to be portrayed.

for mine they have modernised their image a little to make it a bit more sexy than some of the more traditional shows.

but ITM forums are always full of experts that base their opinions on very little fact or real experience.

Come see the show. then diss if it you don't like it.

Ps. How can you tell if there is humour or not in the show by a photo? impossipuzzle. I'm yet to see the entire show myself, but from all reports it is as good as any others in Sydney.

You sound like a promoter for the place, ebcause you sure carry on.

My gf is OBSESSED with burlesque, pin up art and elements of the rockabilly culture, so as a result, I have been exposed to it and NEVER in the two years or so of her discovering the art of burlesque have I seen performers dressed like that, have make up done like that or be marketed like that.

Modernising burlesque fashion and image detracts from what burlesque is and renders it another form of dancing, which may have burlesque influenced elements but is NOT burlesque.

It's kind of like people calling tech-house or minima "techno" and then wondering what the fuck the music is when real techno is played (it all comes down to techno).

If people want the real deal guaranteed, then I reccomend they check out 34b which portrays burlesque back to it's roots. OR the Monsters Ball coming up which will envelope them in not only the dancing and fashion, bu the music and vibe too.

I would love to see what suzie qu thinks of it though.

VERY different from what's put on at 34b. Different vibe about it.

34b takes a more cheesy spin on things. Sexy, but also very entertaining. Presenter is a laugh and a half, and in between the teasing, there are totally leftfield musical performances, comedians and other performers.

Which burlesque performers do you have at Favela?

Seriously dude, the pamphlet makes it look more like a rnb club then a burlesque show.

Having been to see Dirty Pretty Jewels at there previous location i would say they are more a cabaret then burlesque. Their shows are usually accompanied by a singer such as the likes of Courtney Act etc etc, who performs a couple of songs at each act. Its isn't true Burlesque as such but great entertainment and something different to do on a Saturday night.

Also check out The Brag for ads in regards to burlesque nights and whats on in Sydney.

They call themselves "Dirty Pretty Jewells", that is them on the flyer. They do what they call "modern burlesque"...

The marketing is not really aimed at attracting burlesque experts, it's just a really cool and fun themed restaurant concept.

I get what you're saying. pussy cat dolls did cross my mind when I first saw all their shots haha.

looks like a great show none the less.

i dnt think theres anything wrong with adding a little twist to something very traditional.
like the traditional cheesecake for example. they now come in different flavours,.... caramel, strawberry....some ppl may not like it (like me) and choose to keep eating the traditional cheesecake. but for those who dnt mind something a little different can eat the caramel.
but dnt worry, the cheese in the cheesecake is still there!!!
