Josh Gabriel

I think he deserves his own thread on ITM.

Josh's new album:

"As a marked departure from his previous work, Gabriel’s solo work hones in on his darker, effusive musical house and techno side. Going deeper, the tracks have a seamless build climbing from 123bpm to 133bpm across the album, a highly original and completely cohesive adventure. “Eight” delivers a musical journey that feels very personal. And it is."

“Eight” was inspired by Amsterdam, where most of the album was created, and where Josh was bursting with inspiration. The title itself is significant, as he made the record with eight different analog vintage synths, and the piece was finished and mastered on 08.08.08. While this album is full of scientific audio sculptures, there’s more than enough melody for music lovers – and enough technical wizardry for every geek to freak."

http://www.ibeats.co.uk/2008/09/08/josh-gabriel-eight/

1. Viscocity
2. Recife
3. Intention
4. Azora
5. Crosstalk
6. River
7. Tone Program
8. Reverse
9. Summit
10. Sine Waves

I hope he comes to Australia soon.

Inspired by Amsterdam? Ha!

Anyone seen the video (it's on youtube) where, as Gabriel & Dresden, they buy heaps of different types of weed and mix them all together? Funny shit. Never took them as smokers.

Anyway, was a big fan of G&D in my less critical days, so I'm looking forward to seeing what Josh can do.

I've heard the album, and can confirm it's probably a contender for Top 5 artist albums of the year - seriously impressive stuff, with a cohesive flow any DJ set would be happy to call its own.

You dont need to be a chinstroker, just a fan of good music. Agree with Kris, def in the top 5 albums I have heard in the last 12 mths and some very warm, driving prog trance going on there. The analog feel to it is amazing, not to mention how slickly produced and free flowing it is. QLD punters watch out for an upcoming album review and interview in Time Off with the man soon.

N.B - Sif Josh isnt a pot head! One look at the guy and he looks like a stoner from way back (even a little like one of the Trainspotting dudes )

I'm gonna sort out an interview and album review real soon, but unfortunately Time Off is a QLD street press mag (with it's Victorian counterpart running their own material) so you wont get your hands on a copy in Sydney mate.

But I agree completely, someone needs to snap this guy up for a tour - BIG TIME

i think the album was abit dissapointing, it was a bit too techy for my liking, I guess it was Dave which added the pop element and gave their music the lift. Also Josh edited crosstalk and azora for this album, compare the bassline of azora from dave seamans compilation and this album. He has changed both tracks for the worse, im guessing so they fit better with the other tracks.

Josh is a master of the dials hands down, i think he carried dave in G&D and his solo tracks from wave 3, to alive & now eight goto show what he can do, he must be a busy guy with his own family & kids to raise plus music and touring, im backing josh in what ever he does. Even though im a HUGE fan of G&D i think dave is more into the hype & gimmiks where as josh is just a straight out genuine producer, DJ and person in general. Alot of people should follow his example.

I cant stand Techno, but I love this album. For me it was very slightly techy in all the right places, the rest is driving prog Trance all the way back home to Maybury

this album is a pretty tech imo, with influences from a wide range. love it, my fav songs would be crosstalk (and I agree that the album version doesn't sound as good) azora, recife, tone program, summit, river... so pretty much most of them it seems after doing this list haha

G&D define the genre for me. Wish i got to see them in person

Im a keen tech head too, and i was delighted to there mixes over the past few years, pushing more torwards a techy proggy feel. Still highlights of trancey all over the place, but i like the direction.

Ontop of whats already been said about Josh, id like to point out some dave dresden mixes that caught my eye recently. very nice work, i cant knock either of these guys.

Dave seems to have gone down the more poppy path so you can see why Josh wanted to break off and do his deep underground thing for a while, it must have been itching at him for ages which is probably why all their sets went from underground to more mainstream tunes back and forth. It was a style I always liked and I thought it worked well in their own G&D way which noone else has seemed to be able to pull off, but good to see Josh smashing it out himself now.

Its a great album for sure. I think it could annoy a lot of purists as it dances around the edges of a few genres... never really goes big with the trance chords or progressive woosh buildups or techno riffs. The album is out free on something like Mixmag or DJ now too, so there's bound to be a bit of hype after that. Deserved... its nice to hear a good electronic album in an age of limitless Beatport singles.

some news on Davo Dresdenz

http://www.beatportal.com/feed/item/...w-partnership/

Today Beatportal spoke to Dave Dresden who revealed that since the split of Gabriel & Dresden [a] last April, he’s been “going at a gingerly pace and has been in no rush to release music”. Dresden was speaking from the studio of Mikael Johnston in Oakland, California, as he recently formed a new studio partnership with the Mephisto Odyssey [a] man.

Dave and Mikael have been working together for a couple of months already, and are starting to discover ‘their’ sound, which is “definitely emotional”.
“Of all the collaborations that I’ve done since the split, my work with Mikael is the first that has actually bore fruit,” he says. “I worked very closely with one person for seven years so I’m taking my time, getting used to working with other people again. I’m also learning how to use Logic.”

Dresden & Johnston’s first output will be released next Tuesday, a remix of British pop starlet Lily Allen’s new single ‘It’s Not Me, It’s You’

not josh gabriel, but dave dresden...couldn't find a thread for him..

but apparently his remix of BT-The Unbreakable is a monster.

Has anyone heard this yet? Been some time since BT has produced something really classy, I have a feeling this could be something special from hearsay..

We need a random prog thread, where shit can be spoken

dave was the dancefloor guy - gabriel was the guy with the musical skills - i can see this unbreakable remix being pretty commercial (and probably done by 3 other engineers)

Yeah I've been thinking this for a while... Immediate sticky. Something like 'Tracks/Producers/News Thread'.

I'm too self-conscious to make a thread on a single good track.

Nice interview. The Different Pieces label has been great so far. Nick Bugayev's release was incredible. Would love to see Josh tour here soon.

I've never understoof why G&D were so overlooked by aussie promoters... and now themselves individually...

"Gabriel: I have been solo now for 17 months and in the beginning I played much more techno . Part of that was just me taking a break and trying new things out. But in the last few months I have seen a return of more uplifting, emotional music in my sets. More vocals and probably more funky as well. "

So so glad with this.

I like his techno sounding tunes but glad his Winter Kills alias is more vocal oriented.

+1, last time they toured was for Godskitchen tour in 2006? I only discovered them in 2007. Does anybody have any ideas how much would it cost to bring Josh down here and whats his booking agency? I cant seem to find any info.

i think it was 2005, I was too young to see them n was hell bummed. was a huge fan of them already then, first got into them when I loved trance and they made as the rush comes.

Your best bet would be to contact him through his myspace.

I felt Eight was a great album. Well produced but rough and quite inspired. Summit was a fun tune. You could have passed this one off as one of the Chemical Brothers "Electronic Battle Weapons" series:
