Good vs paid.
After helping some one on a site about the HDs this person replied telling me that im one of those people who know all about specs of gear to cover up my lack of skill. (his never heard me). I simply replied that i want to research some thing that im going to spend $270 on.

He believes this is poo change Good djs get paid.

I replied you are a wanker.

This dude is a dj who has been djing in clubs since he was 16 i think his 18 now.

Would like to know if im wrong or not.

Choppy mate! Your right. Don't worry about it hes a wanker. I go on forums all the time and you come across some fucken lossers. Good thing their ain't many wankers on inthemix! Baracan barmour of a bukakie bread stick that dude was.

I know a lot of great dj's who dont play in clubs they just havent seeked or been given the oppurtunity too. And any dj equipemnt i buy you want the most value for money, so i totally agree.

I don't get paid for anything I do. Alot of it is luck and knowing the right people. I'm not jaded for one simple reason, I absolutely love it as a hobby. If it becomes anything else then fair enough, but I'm not hanging out for the day that it does.

Just because he wastes money on shit doesn't make him good, it's about how much knowledge, passion, skill and vision you bring to the equation, anything less is just being pretentious.

I wouldn't let it get your goat mate.

^ paid and straight.

I don't think that getting paid is necessarily a show of your worth as a DJ... that said, good DJs will usually command a high price - particularly because the more they're known for having a good vibe and the goods (mix/music wise), the more punters come and stay (= buying drinks at the bar = PROFIT).

$300 for a gig would depend entirely on the length of the gig... a lot of guys in Sydney would make that in a 2 hour set, but I know that I wouldn't... that said i'm new on scene, and command no crowd.
Any DJ worth his salt will have a sliding scale for they cost to book (anything from free at a mate's party/their own party) to their full price booking (which could be $50/hr, or $300/hr, or $6K/hr) for that big show at the metro or a festival.

Big name cats like Ajax regularly pull a few grand for their 90minute sets.

^^ I don't think so at all, there are so many medicore DJ's doing mediocre gigs. Don't be fooled into thinking otherwise.

A DJ is, at the base of it, a guy who plays other peoples music. Sometimes it's good to take a step back and take in the view.

Taking a step away from something like djing is IMO a stupied move because it is fare more complex than that.

What I meant was to just take a step back every once in a while and gather your thoughts on shit. It helps with everything in life.

Not everything is about getting your dick sucked behind the decks. I don't know what my point is but I'm sure I have one in there somewhere.

Ok my point is: Do whatever the fuck you feel like, don't listen to other people too much.

I'm just trying to figure how an 18 year old has been playing in clubs for the last 2 years since he was 16. I know I used a friends I.D. when I was underage a couple of times, but that was for rushing in and keeping my head down, not for getting any sort of work. I would check his sources for 'playing in clubs' since he was 16 when all licensed venues are 18+ or as a minimum, accompanied by a responsible adult.

$40 - 50 an hour for unknowns (or $0 , just the privilege if your trying to start out)

$60 - 80 [actually this can get as high as is deserved] (for name DJ's that will actually draw a crowd (ie; bring money into the venue guaranteed)

$60 - 70 an hour for cheesy retro / RnB / commercial house gigs (where its packed house regardless due to the masses being blind sighted by the top 40)

$500 wedding [or similar gay gig] (not including sound gear hire)

$100 an hour for requested gigs (18 yr olds who see you play out and ask to come play their 21st..or some sh*t like that) [sound gear must be supplied you dont wanna be organising AND carting that sh*t for a favour]

^ thats just from what I have encountered (learnt) from older DJ's I learnt from, and parties I have thrown myself - I never wanted to insult or over pay anyone so you ask people

so weigh it up yourself i guess

most people dont know a good mix if it jizzed in their face
this guy probably transitions with an echo then cuts to the next track
i wouldnt be fussed about it. getting paid to dj honestly isnt that hard, its just hard to score club gigs.

i went for a mobile djing job, the bloke said yeah you will need to play top 40 and shit from the 70's. mixing is not a priority. just fade in and out. i thought to myself 'wtf am i doing, this feels derogatory. my fucking Ipod might aswell just be docked and going' so i didnt take it. ur 18year old forum mate probably did and he just fades in and out.

fuck him, not everyone wants to bang out soulja boy then fade into the veronicas

^ I totally agree. Obviously playing the right tracks at the right time is the foundation, but how you mix will show wheather and ipod could take your place or not. People who just fade need more mixing skills. A mixer has eq, effects, faders, and filters for a reason so use them.

Even if your a mobile dj and dont mix at all. Knowing what song to play and when is a skill.

Ever been to an event with a mobile dj who has done it forever? The dont have to mix but they can still pack the floor much better than any ipod playlist.

the topless female dj gets paid for more than just her skillz ;P

dont worry about it, just cause a DJ gets paid more doesnt make them a better DJ
some of the best DJs don't get paid at all... they just love doing it.. there are dudes in bedrooms with mad skillz that never play out

as long as u love what u do, and get a day job to pay the bills
