HBO TV Series: A Game of Thrones
Some awesome news for fans of the 'A Song of Ice and Fire' books. HBO have a habit of delivering the goods, so I'm hoping this makes it past the pilot.

Quote:

HBO Greenlights Game Of Thrones

Good news for geeks, with word that George RR Martin's dizzingly complex, ultra-violent and thoroughly addictive A Song of Ice and Fire - or at least first instalment A Game of Thrones - is set for a HBO fantasy drama series, long rumoured but finally greenlit. Admittedly, it's not a film - but with a series this complex, HBO's a better place for it.

A pilot for the show has been given the go-ahead, written by David "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" Benioff and D.B. "I Am Legend prequel" Weiss. It is, roughly, the story of a kingdom whose destiny comes to depend on two warring clans, the Starks (goodies, more or less) and the Lannisters (baddies, mostly - but nothing's clear-cut in this world). It's worth noting that this is a fantasy world that is almost entirely magic-free, and largely lacking in monsters to boot, except for the human kind.

But don't worry: there's regicide, incest, executions, civil wars, conspiracies, changes of heart, murders, ambushes and even zombie resurrection to keep you entertained - and when a story practically opens with a small boy being thrown off a roof, you know this is not your typical Dungeons and Dragons spin-off.

HBO acquired the rights to the books two years ago, and has taken this long to nail plans for the pilot - which, if all goes well, could turn into a complete series and perhaps encourage the book's author, George RR Martin, to finish writing them already. This could make The Wire look like The Teletubbies, so fingers crossed that it works.

wicked.

lots of sex and violence, I can see why HBO would love this as a concept.

The Malazan empire series would *absolutely shit on* any Gemmell series as a selection of movies or HBO series.

I am seriously hoping the rumours of the "Chain of Dogs" movie come true.

Meh. Gemmell is just a Robert E Howard derivation.

The Malazan Empire is actually *original* and would make a visual feast if brought to the screen.

“I adore these books. Howard had a gritty, vibrant style–broadsword writing that cut its way to the heart, with heroes who are truly larger than life. I heartily recommend them to anyone who loves fantasy.”

HBO Will Play ‘Game of Thrones’

If you’ve been jonesing for an epic fantasy to help fill the gap between Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” movies and the maybe-someday remake of “Dune,” HBO may have just rolled the saving throw you needed.

On Tuesday, the cable channel announced that it had officially ordered “Game of Thrones,” a new series based on George R. R. Martin’s “Song of Ice and Fire” fantasy novels. The best-selling book franchise, which began in 1996 with “A Game of Thrones,” chronicles the dynastic conflicts among several families on the mythical continent of Westeros.

The principal cast of the HBO series, which will run 10 episodes, features no less than 17 cast members, including Mark Addy, Sean Bean, Peter Dinklage, Jennifer Ehle, Iain Glen and Lena Headey, as well as Tamzin Merchant (of “Pride and Prejudice”) as the heroine Daenerys Targaryen.

HBO said that the pilot episode of the series was written by David Benioff (“X-Men Origins: Wolverine”) and D.B. Weiss (the author of “Lucky Wander Boy”), who are also among its executive producers. Production on the series is to begin in Belfast in June; a premiere date has not yet been set. Meanwhile, Mr. Martin should have plenty of time to finish writing the last two books in what he has said is a seven-book series.

HBO have stated they are aiming for a March 2011 premier, which may be somewhat ambitious.

I'm just glad I only discovered ASOIAF in 2008 (even if I have read it through four times since!). I can't imagine what it must have been like waiting for Dance for 5-odd years.

The consensus is that he is close to complete, and I think somewhere he indicated that he was disappointed not to have finished it off before he left for his recent Australian tour. So there may be light at the end of the tunnel yet...

On the plus side, he tends to write all over the place and then files them away for later use. He wrote somewhere that he has close to half the material he needs for the book after this already 90% complete

Try reading the Wheel of Time. Started in 1990 but I've read it for the past 12 years Damn thing is taking forever but at least it's getting finished.

Well I check his blog every week or two and look for updates. He has basically finished except for a few perspective chapters that he keeps swapping in and out. However, he still needs to have the book checked, and then do his own re-view process and cut out some fat and then send out some ARC copies to get some early feedback before it get it to publishers and then our shelves.

yeah, heaps of stuff keeps getting pushed into the winds of winter and out of a dance with dragons. apparently the reason dance has taken so long is because of the meerenese knot...

read no further if you haven't finished all the books..

Spoiler:
essentially, because dance and a feast for crows rum simultaneously, yet include character from both, he's been trying to make it work so that no one character is in two places at once, because he has enough respect for his readers to know they'll pick up on it... also, one character in two places at once is a fucking cheap, shitty move that only shit writers of epics do. so at least he's been not been idle.

anyone else read the new dunk and egg story, the mystery knight? pretty fucking cool.

apparently he's about three chapters away from completion, with the publishers saying they're hoping for an early 2011 release.

so my vague guess is it'll come out christmas next year.

she's young yet mate, she'll grow up to be hot imo.

catelyn stark on the other hand... the actress they got to play her seems pretty fckn unattractive, and i know she's portrayed as someone who's gotten on in her years, but i still always imagined her as someone who you could at least look at and say, "she used to be fucking hot".

edit: just found they've cast gregor clegane. conan stevens. over 7ft tall. that cannot have been a fucking easy roll to fill.

Looks awesome! I bought the books after this thread was started, have a couple to go. Creaming my pants at the thought of HBO getting their aweseom little mitts on this.
From the pictures it looks pretty well cast - Tyrion, Kingslayer and Ned Stark are on the money.
