Ben Klock - One (23rd Feb 2009)
Sounds pretty damn good to me.

Loving his remix of Kerri Chandler's 'Pong' (Myspace link).

Taken from RA:

Quote:

Berghain resident Ben Klock has just finished his latest album, which is due out in February '09.

The Berghain resident DJ, who has previously released a double-pack on Ostgut Ton with fellow resident Marcel Dettmann, is famed for his powerful and charging sets of techno in the popular Berlin nightspot. His new record, entitled One as it's his first proper full-length, promises to be more versatile than his stripped back club 12-inches, and work just as easily at home or in the car as it would do in the club. It has just been through the mastering process, so no tracklisting or specific details have been unveiled yet. However, our curiosity urged us to get in touch with Ben and ask a few questions about the forthcoming LP, due out on Ostgut Ton in February of next year.

Your forthcoming album is called One. Can you tell us a little bit about it?

It's the result of my studio work in 2008. I started with the first ideas in January and collected a huge amount of rough layouts over the year. My priority was to use only those tracks for the album which I thought I would still be happy with looking back in five or ten years from now. In the end there are thirteen tracks on the CD album and nine tracks on the vinyl version. I put my focus more on the CD version this time which gave me a wider framework.

Has there been anything in particular that has inspired you during the making of the record?

I can't really say that. For sure I'm inspired by a lot of things, people i meet, travelling and so on. But I would say main influences come from the Hardwax surround and always the Berghain club as a center and main inspiration. I actually don't want to mention it, but to give you the whole picture I have to say that my mother died few days before I started working on the album so it was a special situation for me and working on the album was also a way to handle with it.

This is your first solo full-length. Did you find it easier, or more enjoyable to produce on your own rather than with Marcel?

Lots of people considered the Scenario EP that I did together with Marcel as an album. But we didn't mean to make an album. Actually it's just a double 12-inch. So yes, One is my first full-length. I can't really say it's easier or more enjoyable to work on my own, because when two people who are friends and who have very similar taste in music do something together the enthusiasm is doubled. You have a permanent dialogue and you can make decisions very fast. For every sound or beat you try out you get a prompt feedback from your partner. When you work alone you only have a dialogue within yourself. So sometimes you need more time to re-listen or rethink about things. So the process is more like going into conclave with yourself, especially when you work on a full length album. But this also makes it something very personal and precious.

Do you see it as a collection of club tracks, or as something more?

It's definitely more than a collection of club tracks. All tracks evolved in view of the album. I wouldn't say it's a conceptional album but to have the idea "album" in the back of my mind was already enough of a concept for me. My aim was that it works as a whole, that you can listen to it at home or in your car. It's a greater challenge to make an album than to release a 12" but it also gives you more freedom. You don't always have to think of the club situation and you can do things that wouldn't work as a 12". Well I'm not saying anything new here. But an album is really a more intimate and intensive process. Of course there are club tracks on the album but I think a certain vibe comes through all of the tracks like a leitmotiv.

Ostgut Ton will release One on 23rd February 2009.

Yes looking forward to this. Osgut-Ton is on fire this year, releasing one of the best techno mix compilations of the year (Marcel Dettmann - Berghain 02) and one of the best techno albums of the year (Shed - Shedding The Past). HUGE FAN.

Hang tight for next year, Soma Corp is touring Marcel Dettmann in the first half of '09! Probably our pick for the best techno DJ on the planet right now...

completely agreed. dettmann and dozzy have been the 2 standout djs of 2008 for me by a long long way.

and keep an eye out, we've got a ssg mix from fellow berghainer marcel fengler coming up.

OK so Klock is the man.

Best set of 08 (actually top two with the Valentino Kanzyani set).

Deep dark German Techno with the soul and melody of Detroit.

Ben Klock - One

Quote:

Tracklist:

01. Coney Island
02. Goodly Sin feat. Elif Bier
03. Check for Pulse
04. Underneath
05. Gloaming
06. Init One
07. Cargo
08. OK feat. Elif Bier
09. In a While
10. Init Two
11. Gold Rush
12. Grip
13. Thirteen Rounds

And a small review from RA:

Quote:

Late last month we talked to producer Ben Klock about his forthcoming debut album for Ostgut TonRA's 2008 label of the year. And now to further whet your appetite, we can reveal the tracklisting.

Spanning 13 tracks, the sound is most definitely Berghain and techno-centricas Klock mentionedbut also takes in a bit of beatless ambience ("Init One," "Init Two") and some dubstep inspired-stylings ("Gold Rush") as well.

Klock will be celebrating the February release of the record with a set at (where else?) Berghain on February 21st.

So I am assuming that it is Soma + Likes of You that are bring Dettmann and LOY or both that are bringing Klock and Shed. A Berghain / Osgut themed night perhaps?

Fuck that is a solid year!

Of the three Klock would remain the priority for me. His RA Podcast started it and the Body Tonic Podcast took it to a whole new level.

One is released this weekend (unoficially tonight I think)

I had massive expectations for this album and Klock blew them away.

His sound is where it is at IMO. 'One' is a brilliant album!

'Gold Rush' did make me laugh, it sounded exactly like I imagined a German doing dubstep would sound. As good as the track soudned it was too clinical, and too structured. Something was not quite right

It didn't occur to me to post these sets in this thread. Fans of Berghain style may be a little resistent to the Liebing CLR style based on the past so I thought I would add these to this thread.

Quote:

Ben Klock creates with his sets an atmosphere, which is grounded in deepness. His styles range from dry, but meaty minimal beats to heart opening rave orgasms. He blends Detroit and Chicagio tracks from the good old days into those of the present worth being played out.

In his past he starts to play piano at an early stage, does gigs as a singer and guitarist in a rock band. Generally, he always engages in a lot different genres. In the 90s, gigs at Berlin based clubs like Tresor, WMF and Cookies have firmly placed Ben on the map of the Capital’s nightlife.

Since the opening of the legendary Beghain, he also is a steady fixture of this most popular Berlin club. Berghain is a place committed to the tradition of huge, excessive Techno nights. At the same time, it is the breeding ground for a lot of new things.“This is, where I find the freedom I need!“ Now you have the chance to get an 1hour set from him for free. Have fun with this massive 1h set of Ben Klock live from BE at Space, Ibiza! Enjoy it!

Chris Liebing presents CLR Podcast 025 feat. Ben Klock @ 'BE' at Space, Ibiza (6.08.2009), 17.08.2009

Isn't Klock suppose to be coming out this year? Or early next year?

He's going to cause some serious damage if he does play. I'm probably looking forward to seeing him more than anyone at the moment.

That CLR podcast proves he is well and truly bringing his A game at the moment.
