Monitors for my apartment
Hey all,

Im looking for new monitors for my dj set up. I recently moved from a place where i could mix as loudly as i wanted without anyone knocking on my door, to a place which has extremely thick walls but paper thin floors... argh. If I start mixing then I get complaints from the people below. I currently have a pair of truths which dont help at all because you need quite a lot of power to hear the full spectrum of sound. What also doesnt help as well is that the speakers are extremely bassy and it vibrates through the foors.

So i need a set of speakers that have the following characteristics:
- Doesnt need a lot of power to hear the full spectrum of sound. The less the better
- clear mids and highs
- Not very bassy
- 6 inch drivers or below. The smaller the better.
- Looking at spending upto $500 but price isnt a huge issue
- bang for buck will probably win out over perfect monitors.
- Not looking to use them for production atm but may do in the future
- EQs on the speakers would be great so I can turn down the bass without effecting my mix (nice to have)
- Active is preferable, but willing to look into passive speakers as well.

Thanks!

p.s tried to search but it wasnt working.

Fostex 0.4 is the perfect speaker for your situation! Cheap, nice sound, small. Can't ask for much else! It's what I run and I am really happy with them.

Oh, plus, isolate them from the floor somehow (there is special foam for sale on juno I think, or just pick some up from Clark Rubber) and lay a thick ass carpet down to help with the isolation.

these aren't monitors, but they are really good:

JBL Creature II

they got a nice high mid range, don't require lots of power to hear the full spectrum, and have EQ on the woofer (which also controls mids and highs for the tweeters)

Would of agreed a few years ago, I mixed on them for years, but the Fostex SHIT on Creatures. And considering you could probably get the Fostex cheaper, it's a no brainer.

Thanks guys. Having a look at the Fostexs and Samson ones now. Any more recommendations?

Cant seem to find many places in oz that stock fostex... does anyone know where i can find them cheap? Overseas the price is like $250 after the exchange rate conversion, in oz the price is more like $500.

Anyone know the cheapest place for the Samson monitors?

$500!!! Are you looking at the 0.4's? They are going here for more like $150.

EDIT: At $500, there may be better options.

must admit my M1s seem to have a not too dis-similar frequency response at lower level as opposed to when they are cranked up

i don't agree at all... but it's all subjective. a 6" cone was just too bass heavy for my wooden floor, concrete walled apartment

the samsons did well.

I live in an old queenslander with uninsulated wooden floors and possibly asbestos walls, and my HS50ms can be heard from the fence in the back yard when I've got it at a comfortable level for mixing. I think they need to be quite loud to get the full spectrum

My mate just purchased some of the stanton monitors on special at DJ warehouse. I don't have much experience with monitors, but I thought they sounded nice. Anyway, in answer to your criteria:

Hope that helps a little

The Stanton 6"ers are white versions of the old KRK Rockit 6s. There was a time when they could be had for around $400/pair.

The guy mentioned to us that they are the same as the KRK ones. I've never heard the KRK's before, but from what I understand they have a good reputation?

They're good for the price - pretty scooped mid sound, though... That said, I'd happily DJ with them.
