Gypsy I looked at www.scti.com.au and they are very cheap. I booked my flights for a Europe/South America trip later this year from STA and they offerred me travel insurance. $1200 which takes into account their "discount" because I booked flights with them. I tried studentflights and they were quoting me $1400. Tried the aforementioned website and it was $270!! Travel agents' commissions are astronomical. Sort it out yourself I think. Currently deciding on which company to go for...

SCTI is *very* cheap
a two week trip to europe was $105 with travelinsurancedirect
scti is $70
and from looking at their PDS it doesn't seem that their limits are about the same, their excess is about the same and their coverage is about the same.
the only catch is that they don't have worldwide contact numbers and they want to deal with you over email. but dealing over email is fine and the numbers don't make much difference these days.
seems like a good deal..! would be interested to hear from someone that has claimed with them tho

And I'd laugh if you go to claim and they don't cover it (like the volcano - right now - which they don't cover). Try emailing them for help when you're bleeding out the eye in a third world country and you need help right then and there!

It's not entirely travel agency commissions, some policies are more expensive because they cover more shit (it's all in the WE WILL NOT PAY section of the wording). I haven't made a cent on a single policy I've sold over the last year. All you need to do is find a good consultant who will PRICE BEAT the online guys and you end up with a better policy at a better price.

Not really. When your flight/train is cancelled or delayed and fucks all your travel plans, lose your luggage or fall off a rock somewhere, you'll be thankful you have travel insurance.

No way I would have gone to the US without travel insurance because you'd be paying forever if something happened and you needed medical treatment.

I was wondering if anyone has experience with travel insurance for university exchange to the USA? My host uni over there stipulates that whatever insurance policy you take out (if you don't take out their insurance) must have an office in the USA. I tried just about every insurance company here and none seem to have an office in the US. Even Allianz wasn't of assistance, as they said that their travel insurance here isn't linked to the Allianz - linked company in the US.

Does anyone know of any US travel insurance companies which will cover Australians?

I got my travel insurance through STA travel for my last trip whihc turned out to be AAMI insurance. Made a claim and was paid out wihtou any fuss, however they do apply a discount for the age of the goods lost/stolen.

Its not that tough to get your trip insured. You just need to be sure with where you are going with whom you are traveling and how long you would be traveling. Spending some time on internet can provide you good options.

I've used them a few times now. I'm an ex travel agent and had a good look over their policy and it's quite good. Their individual item coverage is better than most other travel insurance policies I've seen - particularly on cameras which is important to me. I'll be using them again for my USA trip. They're nearly $300 cheaper than the quote I got from the travel agent who booked my trip.

I've used world nomads. Bloody cheap when you are on a 6 week trip imo. Luckily i havne't had to claim... but i couldn't imagine going o/s without insurance. I know so many people that have had so many issues and without travel insurance they would be fucking screwed.

I'm so overwhelmed by all the policies out there that I'm not sure which I should be selecting.

I'm leaving Australia on June 20 and am travelling around Europe inc. UK for approximately 3-4 months and then settling down to live in London. I'm looking to get insurance to cover the period that I am travelling but I know a lot don't apply unless you are starting in and ending in Australia.

Can anyone give me a heads up as to which companies I should be looking at? It looks to be World Nomads is one, but surely there must be others to cover this sort of situation?

^ Doing pretty much the same as you, Europe for 4 months from the start of June.

So far I've checked SCTI, Aami and Allianz and they go cheapest to most expensive in that order with quotes for medical & luggage... SCTI around $270, Aami $330, and Allianz was $590 (note this Allianz cover is the comprehensive cover and not the budget one as the budget only covers medical and not luggage)... Just checked travel insurance direct, the quote from them is $380, as is the quote from 1cover... World Nomads is $274 but they're luggage cover isn't very high at $2500 and the contents of my suitcase would be more valuable than that.

Thinking I'll go the inbetween with AAMI because I know that's a name I can trust.

I'm wondering if I should just get travel insurance in London to cover my trip around Europe. Would solve this 'start and end in the one place' business. Then again, they probably wouldn't cover you unless you're a UK citizen or something ridiculous.

Yeah I'm coming back... Is there anyway they know whether you're coming back or not? You can pay for it online and I haven't seen anything saying you need to show them a return ticket. Unless that's in the next step when you pay which I haven't done yet.

It's pretty basic what you need to find out, just skim through the policy. Luggage, medical, legal, cancelled flights etc. are the main things.

Just bought my AAMI health insurance then.

I found AAMI to be the cheapest for the comprehensive cover. May have been extra cheap because a lot of other things are insured with them (family cars, contents, etc), not sure. But overall AAMI was cheapest by far.
