The Sony does look pretty stupid, but once I held it the felt fairly secure. The NEX-3 was balls, but the NEX-5 was alright, I'd go almost as far as saying comfortable if you plan on doing a lot of one-handed shooting.

Still I wouldn't buy one.

is the picture quality *really* on par with a d-slr?

Gadammnit, I've been wanting to get the 20mm for so long but every time I try to buy it something goes wrong, its like I'm cursed not to have it, very jealous of you right now!

How does it perform in low light? (the 14-42mm blows in lowlight without flash or tripod)

As much as I'd love the 20 f/1.7, I can't justify it now that I have the 9-18, 14-150 and the 17mm f/2.8, but the thing I love, is that I had to buy a smaller bag just to carry around all my camera gear My DSLRs tend to always stay at home these days just because of the sheer convenience of these new little fellas

Cue you've got the ep-1 and the epl-1 right?

Which lens do you find yourself using the most? And which would you say performs the best in low light?

yeah.. it does, and i don't have a flash yet. seems pretty damn good in low light so far, but i only got it last night so all i've tested it with is the cats will report back after the weekend.

i did take this one last night, doesn't really show much i guess but it was dark and the cat was wriggling and stretching!

Next i want an ultra wide, and i think my set will be complete and i'll get rid of the 1000D

Nah I think cats are an extremely good test subject considering how much they move. I should know, far too many shots have turned out blurs!

That photo excites me, I want that glass so bad!

It's in the country, wish the mofos would hurry up and deliver it now!

Also, if you guys haven't already, update your body's firmware to 1.4 —*I've already noticed a huge improvement in auto-focus in low light.

mick, shouldn't you invest in a 'real' camera before you start buying new lenses?

Ok so I've decided to get rid of my Nikon D80 and associated kit, (SB-600, 50mm 1.8, 18-135mm 3.5-5.6, bags etc) and buy a Micro 4/3 camera for my travels. The D80 was/is just too big with all the stuff I have for it to fit in my luggage and lug around.

I've been looking at the Panasonic G2 and GF1 models but seeing a few of you guys use the Olympus any advice?

Mickstah, did you have your 4/3s camera here for Joe and Wanz's wedding or was that a Canon G10/11?

i bought the olympus ep-2 and it's brilliant. i preferred the look and feel over the panasonics, and it doesn't matter which one you end up with in terms of lenses because you can use the m4/3 lenses from both brands interchangeably.

however... i also intended on selling my 1000D and lenses and everything, but i'm having trouble letting go of the "real" camera

Ok so just went in and had a look, the Sony NEX5 was recommended to me by the sales assistant. It's not strictly m3/4 as it has a APS-C censor but its about the same size. It doesn't have a standard hotshoe and can't be used with aftermarket/other lenses either... but damn it took some nice pictures...

I certainly had my 4/3's there, Madz was rockin' the G9.

I also finally got the Pana 20mm pancake and I'm in luuuurve. Have a look at the photos I took over the weekend at a friend's wedding (they're up on facebook), all the shots are unprocessed so will give you a good idea what it is capable of.

I've got the EP-1 but I'd go the EP-2 if you were going the olympus avenue. The GF models have built in flash but just a word of warning, the Oly uses image stabilisation on both pana and oly lenses but the GF only image stabilises pana lenses.

Which ever way you go the biggest bonus is how easy they are to carry around everywhere you go.

The G2 is a little too chunky in size, it looks like a very small SLR. I like the GF size and the EP size...

I've read reviews that say the Olympus models are slow with AF? Anyone care to comment? I think the exclusion of the internal flash is a bit disconcerting and IS isn't exactly an issue, I've been shooting with out IS for years on my SLRs.

The internal flash of the G/GF series can be used to trigger a slave flash off camera.

I guess I'd better try selling my dSLR first, that'll decide how much $$ I have to play with

When you go into a shop to play with the oly gear, keep in mind that the 14-42 isn't one of Olympus' MSC lenses, however its 14-150 is. I have both. Yes the 14-42 is slower than a DSLR, but I personally don't think that's the case with the 14-150, it's quick to focus. Also, with the E-PL1, you have access to Olympus' wireless flash system. I personally am one for in body IS just because it allows me to use slowing shutter speeds in lower light situations (I posted some pics back on page 2 and I was getting down to 1/4, 1/2 a second hand held.

So essentially I have to trade on camera flash for IS...

Hmmm interesting.

Something to ponder.

Or I could go for the Sony NEX5 and be locked into using only Sony brand stuff...

I did have a play with the NEX5 and it's pretty schmick, but the non-standard bullshit seems to be a bit of a crock.

So I'm pretty much in love with the low-light capabilities of the 20mm Pana pancake.

been taking shots that were simply not possible with the 14-42mm. Seriously in love!

Brag post. Just ordered the GF1with the 20mm f1.7 lens, hopefully get it end of the week. It's my first decent camera above a point & shoot so i'm pretty excited. I had a look through the sticky at the top, but are there any articles i read that just cover some simple basics? Or should i just read all the links in the sticky?

Went to see Muse last night at the Brisbane entertainment centre and they wouldn't let my e-p2 in! Apparently the rules were "no cameras with detatchable lenses", and after close inspection by the security dude mine wasn't allowed in

I honestly didn't think they'd know the difference. Sadface.

world's fastest AF system? haha ill believe that when i see it. although i guess it wouldn't be that hard when the focus group weights 15 grams.

looks like an impressive camera though.

I've had a chance to play with the GF2, and I will ask this question:

What is the likelihood that you'll be using this camera's manual modes?

The reason I ask is because of it's lack of an actual mode dial (it's found in a back menu via the touch screen). For myself, I use the A,S & M modes of my camera quite a fair bit and for me, the lack of that dial is a bit of a deal breaker. But if you're not going to delve into these modes and are mode likely to leave it in IAuto, then you'll be fine.

Having said that, with the GF3 newly out, you could prolly pick up a GF2 for a reasonably cheap price.

I would probably use manual modes half the time. I wanted a camera that could be good enough for personal studio images of objects while also suitable for travel. I did hear news of the GF3 but it didn't have the hotshoe, and I did want the option.

This was just posted on DPreview by Olympus Australia. Looks like they're looking for test drivers for their new Pens

Do you capture ordinary details in extraordinary ways? Do you love to take photos that shock, surprise or inspire? Olympus challenges you to test-drive the new Olympus PEN E-PL3 to capture snaps that are Anything But Ordinary, which could become the star of the new Olympus advertising campaign.

Open to budding camera and photography enthusiasts, from students interested in street photography through to anyone interested capturing the unpredictable, Olympus will select twenty individuals to take part. Armed with nothing but an Olympus PEN E-PL3 and their creative eye, participants will be given free rein to shoot unpredictable images and be amongst some of the first in the country to showcase the camera’s artistic features and produce authentic, unpredictable images.

“Olympus’ Anything But Ordinary campaign is set to celebrate the unexpected, the out of the ordinary and the absolutely unpredictable. We are calling on everyday Australians to give us their take on ‘Anything But Ordinary’. In return, Olympus will provide them with their very own PEN E-PL3 camera to test drive and the opportunity to showcase their very best photographs in Olympus’ next advertising campaign.”

Photography enthusiasts who are keen to try out the E-PL3 from the new PEN range of Next Generation System Cameras need to submit three examples of their personal photography and fill out a short questionnaire on the Olympus Facebook page. Submissions will open from Friday 26 August to Thursday 8 September. Selected participants will be notified by Wednesday 14 September before being issued with an Olympus PEN E-PL3 and an ‘Anything But Ordinary’ brief. More information can be found at http://www.facebook.com/Olympus.AU

Nice, I was kinda hoping it'd be something about the rumour Pen Pro though…

Shame it's for the PL3 and not the E-P3, that's what I'm most interested in.

Surprised to see no mention of the Nikon J1 in here. But still not surprised given it's mediocre sensor size. Haven't seen any reviews on it yet either. Wonder if this would be a blunder for nikon.

Managed to get a 45mm f/1.8 to accompany my new E-P3...and it's absolutely fantastic Shot a couple of birds...the full res versions of these shots are amazing...you can see individual hairs from the feathers when you zoom in and everything...very very impressed with this new piece of glass

Good observation, however Nikon are pitching this as a competitor to other micro interchangeables. I think that's the problem.
