phatness divided by a factor of 5, then times that answer by the total number of people u played to, plus drinks = going rate

good to see your dealing straight with the manger!

you will have to get an ABN and possibly register for GST

also to get your dj licence you will have to provide receipts for all of your music collection and undergo a character test

Yes you need a dj licence, and you MUST be wearing fluro headphones in the photo.

Fluro hoodie is optional.

I would suggest going to the post office and asking for the provisional dj licence application form.

Fill it out and send it in quickly because they can take up to 21 working days to process.

I reckon if you polished that bald head of yours enough you could bounce lasers and lights off it - would be a mad light show. Fuck the light cube, we got a bald DJ!

your pay was actually worker out by

Use of flanger in minutes x (number of times you play a MOS track x amount of cdj's you have) - value of any non fluro clothing worn during gigs

On a serious note, you will get paid as much as the manager wants you to.

Think of how much you want to be paid, he probably wants to pay you half that.

Put your price to high, and they next fluro wearing electro dj kid will undercut you and take your spot.

Make sure you get cheap or free drinks, if you arent, not worth it imo

$50 an hour is the lowest i would go. but it all depends on the area.

If your playing for 4.5 hours then that 200 to 300 buck I would think would be a fair amount.

Would be good to know going rates in different parts of the country

I think melb is $100 an hour but a lot of gigs are only an hour long

I think i read here that syd is $75 an hour

On average I reckon $50-$60 per hour is more realistic.

I'd be more tempted to start on $40 but be prepared to accept $30 per hour and make sure you don't abuse the riders (if they're offered).

get some experience, get your shit together, then start looking around for more gigs... when you get more gigs either leave or ask for more $$.

the most important thing is to get as much club experience as you can.

If you're supplying gear you're going to want to charge more than the rate for purely rocking up and mixing.

for pure mixing, with your level of experience, $50 is more than enough.

If you're supplying the gear you might want to consider a fixed fee ($100 or so) for this and then the additional hourly fee.

aside from that ... i hope you can move on from electro house

oh... didn't realise you were using your own gear.

in that case I'd actually hire gear and oncharge +pickup and drop off timings.

i would suggest not using your own gear.

Why does no one ever want to use thier own gear?

I use my own all the time. The punters are not that bad. Saying that, I will probably have someone spill their glass of champers all over my console Friday night.

Usually its ok if your space doesn't have room for drinks. Saturday night was good because our table only just fit our gear. But sometimes it does suck.

i use all my own gear when i play gigs, but they really only consist of 21sts and my weekly uni bar gig. i would love to hire gear each time, but the outlay is too much to recompensate in the pay. first u got $80 for speaker hire, then $80 for each cdj then another $60 for a mixer... at that rate im gonna have to charge $500 to make a decent profit!!

or do i have my hire prices a bit off? i guess a package would be cheaper...

Don't you people believe in Insurance?? Could possibly add gear onto your Personal affects cover as part of your household insurance (I cover my photo gear like this) and it's cheap as chips!

For house parties I'd use my own gear cause you'd know at least a couple of people. Out at a pub/club there are too many randoms - no way I'd use my own gear there.

I think it all depends on a reasonable and fair assessment of how many people you are attracting to the pub and how much they are spending over the bar.

There's no point charging $100 an hour if its a small venue and only 40-50 people are there. The pub won't be making much profit.

I've just started playing in a small room at my local pub in the mountains, bringing my own dex/mixer but using their sound. I used to get paid $75-$100 in Sydney but it would be stupid of me to ask for that up there so I'm charging $60 an hour including the use of my dex and mixer.

I'll see how we go with numbers over time and may decrease or increase the fee after discussions with management.
There is pleasure in the pathless woods,
There is a rapture on the lonely shore,
There is society, where none intrudes,
By the deep sea, and music in its roar:
I love not man the less, but Nature more.... Lord Byron

Does anyone find a degree of irony in the fact digital DJs tout one of the advantages being its portability ... then they cart their own CDJs to a gig ?

The less shit you have to carry, setup and break down (and worry about) the better imo
