Are there any other CC's that have free international withdrawals when you use your CC as a Debit card - ie overload it with funds?

No, but you can get a NAB Visa Gold Debit that has no int. trans fees or no overseas ATM fees for $10 a month.

I used this in Thailand and it was ace.

I managed to grab one about a week before it got canned!

Nice how there was no warning that they were merging...

Also note - a lot of cards won't protect the money that you put in there (beyond paying off the credit limit).

So if your card gets stolen/cleaned out you won't get any of this back.

I just got a NAB Visa Debit account. Same sort of deal like mikewebster, looks the goods! No monthly fee if a certain amount is deposited monthly in ur account, there are different types.

http://nab.com.au/wps/wcm/connect/na..._finance/5/1/5

You could avoid paying the monthly fee, simply by arranging to have your salary, or any regular deposit, paid into your new NAB smart everyday accounts. Simply deposit:

At least $2,500 a month and you'll avoid the fee on NAB eBanking
At least $3,500 a month and you'll avoid the fee on NAB Classic Banking
At least $5,000 a month and you'll avoid the fee on NAB Gold Banking

Awesome thanks for that guys! I'll have a look into the NAB card, interesting they wont cover any money over the limit. I guess with netbanking though it will be easy enough to just deposit small amounts at a time.

Cheers!

i note that the finance industry and RBA reforms on 'transparency' in bank fees may impact international fees, so much as it has on domestic ATM fees. the new regime came into play march 3. so i'd double check the impact it has on overseas transactions before getting yourself a new card.

The information that NAB sent out regarding their NAB Gold Visa Debit is that the International trans will still be fee free, domestic trans will attract fees from the ATM provider.

They reduced the monthly fee for the Gold card down to $10 from $12 because of this.

In short: International transactions are not affected by the RBA changes.

Sorry - what do you mean no Wizard Clear Advantage Matercard??

I literally only just received my Wizard Clear Advantage Matercard two weeks ago....and apparently it still has no international fees! This is reason I went for it - esp as it has no fees on withdrawing cash AND that you can pre-load it (pay cash) before you go (so you can use it as a debit card rather than a credit card).

Pretty sure you need to apply through GE Money now, not Aussie.

There was a merger (or takeover I don't know) of Wizard by Aussie meaning from Feb 2009 they are no longer issuing new Wizard clear advantage ccs - you got in just in time it seems. They are still honouring the Ts and Cs for those currently with a card...

The NAB gold card has an annual fee of $90 - might just be worth getting the cash passport if they're all that expensive!

I was talking about the NAB Gold Visa Debit. Not the NAB Gold Credit Card.

Two different products.

The NAB Gold Visa Debit - NAB Gold Banking - is a Visa Debit card, not a credit card. You use your own money. It is tied to your NAB account which has a monthly service fee of $10 (which is waived if you deposit over $5K a month).

The beauty of this product is you can change to the standard account which has a lower fee waiver threshold for before and after you return from travel if you're not gonna put in $5K a month.

Product details: http://www.nab.com.au/wps/wcm/connec..._finance/5/1/3

Because the cash passports only store money in certain currencies, you could lose out if you're travelling to a country other than those the cash passport offers with a double conversion. Additionally Cash Passports charge ATM withdrawal feeds.

Exactly what I have done for my upcoming trip to China/Malaysia. Got my Gold Visa Debit a week or so ago, and will cancel the account as soon as I get back. Might end up paying 3 months of account fees, but will certainly save much more than that on foreign atm fees, currency conversion fees etc.

So hi, I'm new here and have some dumb blonde questions.

I'm travelling Europe in July. Was just going to use my regular Visa Debit to get money out and my CC for bigger purchases (not with a major bank - just with a Newy based building society). Does that mean I'm going to be charged a transaction fee and a currency conversion fee for each transaction, unless I get a magical travelling overseas specific card like the ones mentioned above?

More than likely yes. Probably 1-2% currency conversion on everything you purchase. Plus (likely) $3-5 every time you take cash out.

Best to chat to the bank for more economical options.

What Lewis_Woot said.

The bank will charge you a fee, and the card issuer also charges you a fee.

Total amount of fees can be up to 3-4% of transaction.

Then if you're not using a same bank atm, which chances are you won't because the bank is unlikely to be o/s, they'll charge the 'other bank atm' fee.

I am pretty sure the Wizard Clear Advantage Mastercard is still available (unless im missing something obvious) but i called up and applied for one earlier this week and i asked about no international fees or foreign exchange fees and they said theres still none. http://www.wizardclearadvantage.com.au/

I think the Nab Gold Debit card still has a % fee for foreign exchange just no fee for international atm usage.

Thanks Mike for clearing that up =)

Are all of these fees associated with the visa debit? I'm a full time student, do they wave any of the fees because of that??

Quote:

Current monthly account service fees:

* NAB eBanking – $4 a month (Reduced to $0 if at least $2,500 per month is deposited into the account)
* NAB Classic Banking – $5 a month (Reduced to $0 if at least $3,500 per month is deposited into the account)
* NAB Classic Banking for full-time students - $0 a month
* NAB Gold Banking – $10 a month (Reduced to $0 if at least $5,000 per month is deposited into the account)
* NAB Concession Card Account - $0
* NAB Retirement Account – $0
* NAB Clear Banking - $6 (Reduced to $0 if at least $3,500 per month is deposited into the account)
* NAB iSaver – $0
* NAB Smart Reward Saver – $0 (Fee of $3 a month applies if more than one withdrawal is made in the month)
* NAB Smart Junior Saver – $0
* NAB Term Deposits – $0
* NAB Investment Cash Manager – $10 a month (Reduced to $0 if minimum monthly balance is greater than $10,000)
* NAB Cash Manager – $0

The bold one is the one you want. Even if it's just for the month(s) you're overseas. You can switch back to the eBanking or whatever when you get back.

I don't think they waive the $10 fee if you're a student, but might want to check with them.

In any case $10 p/m is a massive saving on the fees you'd pay if you use your card as much as I did when I was o/s.

Also get bonus purchase protection etc with the Gold Banking too.

haha totally don't! I work for a telco!

however, I have researched this topic quite thoroughly. Hence why I'm always rabbiting on about it.

Quite a high conversion rate too, I should be on commission.

If there is a product I believe in and that I use, I'm all too happy to tell others about it if I think they'll get value from it.

Have yet to see any other debit card schemes offer even close to what this does and for those of us that like to travel, this is probably the best deal I've found.

Was wicked before the RBA bought in their changes, could use any ATM in Aus without extra charges too!

drater - get an anz travel card (sus anzfx.com) in the currency of the country you'll spend most of your time in. they'll still charge you 1euro for cash withdrawls (plus extra fees if you use an atm in a bar, 7/11, etc.. just like in aus).. but that's a lot less than what your bank will charge you (mine charges me $5) and the exchange rate is usually better, and it's fixed when you load up the card. plus they give you a secondary card to hide in your backpack or something in case your wallet gets lost/stolen. i've been travelling for the past 5mo with two of these cards (one in usd, one in gbp).. they are good!!

2.10 Euro per ATM transaction still kills.

EDIT: + 11 AUD for opening the account

NAB is still winning.

Clear Advantage for credit; NAB Gold for debit seems to be the way to go.

Mike, is the travel insurance that comes with NAB Gold for free? Also is there a minimum contract or can we cancel it 2 months after getting it?

No minimum terms that I'm aware of,

Travel Insurance on Gold Visa Debit is only valid if you pay for your flight tickets with the NAB Gold Visa Debit card afaik.

Have a read through the PDS for the full details on that one.

Well the application forms and stuff are still there so I'm assuming its still around. I had one two years ago when I traveled and it was ace so I'm planing to get it again.

The problem is you can either use it as a credit card or as a debit card if you overload it. The smart plan is to get one mate to overload it and use it as a debit card and the other to use his/hers as just a credit card. My mates were far too lazy to do anything of that sort, so I ended up using mine as the CC and had to fork out the massive ATM fees whenever I pulled money from my normal CBA bank card.

This time though I'm taking the precaution of doing it myself so I'm looking for a debit card with no ATM fees in addition to the Clear Advantage CC.

Hi guys,

I emailed a few days ago the Wizard Clear Advantage Mastercard and they are still DEFINITELY taking applications. (it has no fees domestically and internationally , plus great service.... well for me so far!) They were recently taken over by GE Money (used to be Aussie i think??).

Anyhoo try going to www.wizardclearadvantage.com.au or GE Money website.

Tried using the online thing to increase it, but says that it isn't possible at this time?

Odd considering I have no debt / previous credit cards / etc

when I got the card I initially had the 1k limit as well. Then I had to fill up some form with a million questions and prove that I have been living in the same house for over a year and that I've been working in a permanent job and then I got it upped to 10k.

But that was two years ago.

Yea, I got my card (again) recently and called them up to expand my credit limit and the lady on the phone said that they won't process any credit increases in the current climate.

Still not bad, I got 6k limit which isn't bad really.

fuck putting someone on as a secondary card holder. You're liable for their debt.

No matter how good a friend/family member is, this scenario has gone south so many times...

I just asked my bf's dad about this card and he is going to do some looking into it for me. He worked for Wizard Home Loans and now comes under Aussie. He said with GE now owning these cards he wasn't sure of the stability of GE in Australia and that it may effect the terms of the card and that there might be a better option out there now. I will get back to you with what he says!

I'm a bit confused. I have a Westpac Debit Card atm...which I used as a credit card here (i.e.sign) but it draws on my own savings.

Can I use that card os the way I do here?

Also I am looking to get a cc for os. Would it be best to look at a card through other banks or just stick with one from Westpac?

Has anyone travelled with NAB gold banking?
http://www.nab.com.au/wps/wcm/connec..._finance/5/1/3

It looks to have free international withdrawals.
