best areas to live in Brisbane? please help a kiwi out :p
So I'm finally going to make the move as daunting as it seems...
I've saved up enough for a deposit for a small house so am now trying to suss out the best areas to live in...
I'm really looking for a safe, clean area, doesn't have to be the flashest area (budget will limit that as well) but I'm just looking for a nice neighbourhood with some parks, good entertainment venues from clubs to picture theatres to say tenpin bowling alleys, with a local pool and fitness centre and some restaurents would be nice to! Do I ask too much?!!
Oh yeh and close enough to the city would be a bonus!!

Thanks

Brisbane is just a large town not a city.

I know they is always alot of dicksizing and argument going on here on which is better, Sydney or Melbourne and really it just comes down to personal preference. I imagine Brisbanites will say the same thing but can I ask you why Brisbane?

I think your budget will decide this for you.

For a nice house with none of the local features you desire, 20 km from the city you are probably looking at around 350 - 400k

The above reco's are good as they are top Brisbane suburbs but are also the most expensive. Go for Mt Gravatt, Sunnybank or Rochedale as you can get some fair prices and less than 20 minutes to the city.

Great public transport at all those spots, gyms etc everythin you need.

Email me anytime james@befreshclothing.com I live in Brisbane and would be happy to help you out in any way I can.

10 min walk to the valley
5 min walk to the mall
(add on 5minutes coming back tho.. its a hill)
can be pretty pricey tho.... but traffic is shithouse here and i value my time.. so i love the stress free life i have, esp when i am so busy!

warm climate, uncrowded beaches...close proximity to travel up the coast
have family in melbourne but find it boring there, sydney is a bit disjointed and poncy for me lol

also try northside - stafford, alderley, lutwyche, newmarket, kelvin grove, wavell heights etc...all within 10km of the city. as the others have said, it really depends on your budget.

there is a government specific job site too, i can't remember what it is called, try google

good luck, and welcome!

I find Brisbane is a lot better for short-term or temporary employment rather than something that's permanent. I'd suggest landing a decent job first before moving here, don't want to be stuck with a mortgage and no way to pay for it.

Good choice Kiaora.
I moved over to Oz 2 years ago from Auckland to Melbourne. I found most Melburnians had their heads stuck up their arse but the place just didn't live up to its hype except for the crappy weather.
Ive been in Brisbane for the past 6 months & love it. Can get a bit heated in summer but the beaches are 2nd to none & Brisbanites are generally a friendly down to earth bunch. Havn't spent much time in Sydney but I agree it does have a poncy feel

Try Spring Hill, Red Hill, Paddington & Kelvin Grove. To many yuppies in New Farm

I been living in Brisbane for past 9 years - tho moved from NZ 13 years ago. We settled in Jindalee - loads of parks, close to public transport - not too hard to get into town and the house prices pretty reasonable. Shit load of gyms within 10 mins of each other. Only thing missing is the restaurants - few around but nothing flash. WOuld like to live closer to city but major xx'y!!

Good luck bro - sweet country to live in!

So after looking at the map am I right in saying Western, North or Eastern suburbs are more desirable? How about the south?

you'd be heading straight to Boganville

really - land is cheaper, but there isn't that great a value in it. It's pretty much flat and in the thick of industrial areas. Traffic sucks butt (you'd be taking the Pacific Highway) which is chockas from Daisy Hill to the City... and not much to do - though Logan City Council is forever trying to do something.

Western area (waaaay before Ipswich) is awesome. I bought property in 2005 at $200K - it doubled by the time it was sold last year Great area

Lucky I didn't get fucked up :/

seriously.. you should suss it all out for yourself. just do short term rent for a year and suss places out. rushin into smtg you are not familiar with is just ASKING for disaster. Although there are only 2Million people in Brisbane/GC.. its one of the biggest cities in the world by land mass.... and almost 5 years later I am STILL seeing places for the first time... like the weekend just gone. I didnt realise thick forests were only 30 minutes from my spring hill apartment one one single road.. but i finally went and saw mt nebo!

Hell no - stay away from south side brisbane...I lived there for about 18 months. My neighbours had non stop arguments...1 guy kept and axe head and a container of petrol with a lighter in his mail box to defend himself against the guys that would drive down the street with guns waving out the window. Another guy bashed his wife, trashed his house and threw their tv out the window onto the bonnet of their car. My direct neighbour used to get drunk and pick fights with the other people in the street and they were all fucking each others spouses...EWWWW!

STAY AWAY FROM southern burbs!!! Dont have to go fully north side but anything near or around Logan - stay away mate!!

haha my friend has recently moved to samford so i went and visited.. i had no idea we had such cute little country places only 45 mins from brissie! and i mean country.. she has horses and chickens on a couple of acres

to the OP.. inner west is good: milton, auchenflower, toowong, taringa, st lucia, indooroopilly, etc. good public transport, nice suburbs, and you'll find affordable housing in those areas (gets more affordable the further from the city). toowong and indooroopilly are the "hubs" on this side of town, with shopping centres and stuff

for what u are looking for...all the obvious places have been mentioned such as West End, Spring Hill, New Farm etc.

These places are all great areas.....some alternative suggestions that are quite affordable and also have or are close to parks, cinemas, bowling alleys, close to city etc are

Westside-Indooroopilly, Taringa, Toowong, Auchenflower, Milton, Paddington, Bardon, Petrie Tce, Rosalie

Southside-Camp Hill, Coorparoo, Greenslopes, Bulimba, Cannon Hill, Hawthorne

Northside-Clayfield,Lutwyche, Windsor

Edit-Thanks Madam Meow

These places are all great areas, however you said you wanted parks, cinemas, bowling alleys, close to city etc.

the queen st mall in the city is 5 minutes walk from my place.
in that mall there is a bowling alley.. and you can drink there too
also there are a couple cinemas just next to the bowling alley.. and another a bit down the road that has arthouse
i live 2 minutes walk from roma street parklands, and 10 minute walk down 1 street to botanical gardens.
there is also another alternative theater just 10 minutes walk in a different direction that happens to be in the valley.. which is where plenty of nightlife and restaurants are. so u can have a life without having to drive everywhere.
any more places would you like me to direct you too dpacifica?

so that is why i love spring hill.

Brisbane rocks! haters should move to Sydney.

I live on the west side, Toowong but the northside is a good buy for an investment. Try nundah, toombul, boonah, zilmere for prices under 400k.

Bulimba and Hawthorne are ideal, so if you're on a budget check out their adjacent cousins Balmoral and Morningside which are a bit more affordable. The extra 1km walk to Oxford Street will only make you fitter.

What's cool about this area is the great community vibe and the nice little parks and cafes, as well as only being a few minutes' ferry ride across the river from Teneriffe and New Farm, which as others have said is also a great area with plenty to keep you occupied.

nah Toombul and Nundah are pee pee soaked heck holes... well not really but I love living near/in the City and they're too far out for me. I did live at Albion for a while, that area is pretty good, close enough to the city, excellent public transport.

If I didn't live in the Valley and I HAD to move back to the "burbs" I'd probably move back to Auchenflower. I really like it there

Thanks again, I'll be looking North, North West.
How about living on the East? does it have any benefits near water features eg. beaches or sea-views (not that my wallet can afford it, but a close drive there would be alright!) Chur
