DJ ethics - a few nuggets of knowledge
Only a few people on here might appreciate some of the knowledge dropped, but I think there is a little something for everone..

Taken from Cosmo Bakers twitters - Cosmo is a New York DJ, with mad credentials..

Sounds a little mad, but in this day and age of blogroll DJs, I can totally understand where he is coming from..

i remember when it was biting if you sounded like
someone else & you weren't part of their crew or at least from their
hood

I remember when biting was considered weak and people got called out
for it. What the F*ck happened?

I remember when DJs had their own particular unique style motherfuckers
weren't so generic

I remember when particular records were attributed to DJs, back when
every damn fool didn't have every damn record at their fingertips

I remember when DJs had to work HARD to unearth joints, or drop serious
cream.

I remember when DJs had to work hard when they perform, not look like
they're checking their f*cking email

I remember when DJs broke new records in the club, not letting kids
ringtones dictate what I should be playing. You can get the bozak

I remember when people actually got EXCITED when the new hot joint came
on in the club, and they recognized it

Yeah, I have records where the labels have been washed off / blacked
out. What of it? I don't give a F*ck, get your own records

BITING IS NEVER ALLOWED. Beatbiters get the herbalz in they mouth
And for a lot of you motherfuckers who are on some "Well that's just
the way it is these days" shit..

Dude, you wouldn't BE a DJ if they never invented Serato.
Don't think you can speak to me.

If you don't have double copies of "Dance to the Drummers Beat" in one
sleeve, do not even address me, son

I remember when Kool G Rap "its The Demo" would set the f*cking party
off RIGHT. Now it's all 130BPM+ wobble wobble. All good, just saying

Hey DJ - what's the next trend to hop on? f*cking Mosquito-Tech-Step?
Go fly a kite while I listen to The O'Jays..

Better yet, no matter where in the world you are right now, put on
Donald Byrd "Love Has Come Around" and GET f*cking RIGHT!

Every real HIP-HOP DJ keeps 2 copies of "Before I Let Go" in their
crates

Straight up I do this shit because I have no other choice. I didn't
choose to be a DJ - DJing chose me. This aint no popularity contest.

Don't speak to me unless you can rock a party with a shoebox of 45s and
a pair of busted headphones. GET YOUR WEIGHT UP. But for real...

Yo Cool Guy DJ - YOU HAVE NO RECORDS. Step off...

Also, if you can't beatmatch without looking at WAVE FILES you should
just pack it in right now and go home. UPS is hiring, son..
.

I don't give a F*ck ill tell you right now - the shit I hear on the
radio these days has NO f*cking EDGE to it.

Cue the apologists: "dude you're so disconnected from the yoot and the
skreets." Nah son you're just unoriginal and have bad taste

How about dropping the record when that shit was on 45? Oh yeah you
digiDJs never had that issue did you.

i used to buy EVERY copy of a particular record to protect my sound.
one time i bought 8 of em..

Lotta dudes these days on some "Let me play 10 records in 60 seconds"
shit - which is cool, and an art in itself...
But motherfuckers cutting records off WAY before its time. That's a
prime example of DJs playing tunes that they JUST DON'T KNOW...
Like man, these dudes back when they were constructing these songs,
they knew what they were doing. TRUST THESE DUDES. TRUST TOM MOULTON...

TRUST LARRY. TRUST SHEP. These records have a natural way of coming
into their own maturity over the 7/8/9 minutes that they run.
Cutting them off before they've fully matured to appease to some
fuckwad's nonexistant attentian span does this music a grave disservice

I'm on some "playing all three verses" on the hip-hop tip these days

Also to you dumb motherfuckers who come to the clurb and ask for hip
hop but really don't even know what that means...
.. I'll play some Super Lover Cee & Cassanova Rud for ya? Boo hoo this
aint Rihanna or some assorted "Lil" or "Yung" character, IDGAF

It actually occured to me that if you aint listening to Cameo right now
then you aint shit...

Tradition for tradition's sake is like using a dildo over a dick just cause the technology is there.

Pretty soon they'll have a machine that fingers your drop tank whilst it applies moisturizer and hair gel

once that happens i'll turn metro

but not before

Can't believe I need to do this, But I'm going to break some of my favourite points into a language that you might understand (sheeesh!)..
Because many of you are missing the point..

Biting = copying = bad - Don't do it kids. Create your own DJ style. Don't try and sound like your superstar DJ heroes.

Play your own tracks - Stuff that YOU have discovered. I remember when Illya was king for dropping "Gonna Make It" before anyone else was playing it. He broke that record in Sydney - Who else is doing this kind of thing now days?

Don't just buy tracks off Juno or Beatport and call it a day - EVERYONE is going to have those same tracks. Even digital DJ's should have their own spots. There are plenty of online niche record spots and labels around the world. Do some digging!

Ask yourself - Would you have still been a DJ even if Serato wasn't invented? Would you have bought records? Seriously?

Learn to mix with your ears not your eyes!

Don't speak to me unless you can rock a party with a shoebox of 45s and a pair of busted headphones. GET YOUR WEIGHT UP. But for real...

- I'm not even going to fuk with that one. That is straight up truth!

It actually occured to me that if you aint listening to Cameo right now then you aint shit...
- I can't mess with that either..

Once upon a time, particular DJ's used to break records. Larry Levan would often play a record 7 or 8 times in 1 night, and you can't front on Levan.

Once upon a time a lot of cool things happened.. Its fun to remember.

Seriously though, while a lot of the points he makes are interesting, I still feel like they're somewhat irrelevant. Sure, be your own DJ, don't copy others - but to have a track that no-one else in the world plays.. these days?? Chances are there's a reason no-one else is playing it, and that's cause its a shit track. I don't need some has-been to lecture me on what to do - and isn't that going against his own advice anyway, since I should be doing my own thing? And if you need someone to give you this advice, then chances are you're not the most driven, enthusiastic DJ to begin with, and this isn't likely to change your mind.

I don't know, I wasn't clubbing in New York in 78 - But I think there are some fundamental things that DJs lack now days, certain aspects that can be taught from listening or watching the pioneers. things that can actually make you a better DJ.
It's kind of hard for me to comprehend that there are so called DJ's out there who totally disregard, or don't even have an interest in how the pioneers used to play.
Kind of like if you were learning to play guitar, you would be listening to all the greats to get some inspiration, learn to master their styles..

I don't know about that. I think that's being real ignorant. Seriously!
There are a zillion download sites, niche record labels, foriegn record stores, all with unique tracks.
just because It's not sold on Beatport or Juno doesn't make it shit - Infact, it makes it more desirable in my opinion.
All good though - People can keep playing the same old tired tracks. Not my issue.

i hate this new hip hop slang where everyone calls everyone "son", like they're some fucking old timer who remembers the forties. stfu, saying "son" does not make you wise. it makes you sound like a fucking douche.

My comment was somewhat tongue in cheek - I was more referring to the idea that most tracks, even those on the most well-buried download sites will have been downloaded and played by more than a handful of DJs. So what is the difference between digging and finding one of these tracks, as opposed to finding another track which through no fault of your own becomes popular after you found it?? Many times I have stumbled across a track through my internet travels and thought it was a hidden gem.. only to see it becoming popular weeks or months later. Does this make it an inferior track, or make me a lesser DJ?

well i would LOVE to do that dude, but unfortunately the sets here in melbourne only go for an hour at a time.

people seem to love reminiscing what it was like back in those days, i myself am guilty as charged, but we always forget the simple fact that things have changed, clubs have changed, records have changed, the world of dance music is now different. if you plan on sitting on your chair being grumpy because she ain't what she used to be, you're gonna rot in that seat and not make any progress.

so the OP to me is just a reminder of what not to do -- that is -- be angry at all the new kids in the scene doing what they do. i was once the grumpy dude but you have to get over it. change is important, whether it's good or bad. the other thing that made me realise i need to get over it is that being grumpy and whinging isn't going to change anything.

just get on with it, gramps!

sure, thats happens - Used to happen to Vinyl DJs as well..

Perhaps it's a sad indictaion of how things are nowdays.. I'm sure we have had gigs were we have been constantly harrassed by cluelesss people to play whatever the biggest cheeseball tune of the moment is - and there are plenty of cheeseball DJ's who give in to those requests without a moments hesitation.
I've always been an advocate for DJ's trying out new stuff, challenging the crowd a little, testing the boundaries - and yeah, this still happens, but the "general" population aren't as receptive to this as they used to be..
I guess that's really opening up a whole different topic..

Shit - Like Cosmo, I've even got old records that I blacked out the label so no-one would know what it was, as it was done at the time. I don't do that stuff anymore of course - But I'm really hard pressed to go hear a local DJ play nowdays and not know 90% percent of the tunes they played. What happened?

I agree that playing a set with funk 45s, that has off tempo is definely rep worthy. Dj alia, in melbourne can do it very very well.

But first of all, i can apprieciate all music, but nothing i "want" to spin has every come out on a 45. Maybe if i was a hip-hop dj who wanted to add originality or flare to his set... but im not.

I am an house dj, and while i like to be original in my mixing i would rather see my originality come from my own remixes or productions in my sets.

And playing with busted headphones... thats just stupid, borrow some...

Either way its a rant... grain of salt.

I think Cosmo takes DJing too seriously. And in the end, he's still just playing other people's music. Sounds like he's a bit of a jaded dinosaur.

But i agree with these 2 statements:

But motherfuckers cutting records off WAY before its time. That's a
prime example of DJs playing tunes that they JUST DON'T KNOW...
Like man, these dudes back when they were constructing these songs,
they knew what they were doing.

These records have a natural way of coming into their own maturity over the 7/8/9 minutes that they run.Cutting them off before they've fully matured to appease to some fuckwad's nonexistant attentian span does this music a grave disservice

This is the crux of what bugs me about this forum. I've seen a warehouse party being rocked by someone using a CDJ100 and a DVD player before. yes a DVD player!

Funny. Cosmo sounds more of a hater than anyone on here.

fair call - I guess there was just something about this point that I really liked. Kind of stripping all the gadgets away and taking it to the fundamentals.

He sounds like someone saddened by the cheapening of an industry, his hatred has merit.

The cheapening started as soon as DJing/party-throwing got labelled as an "industry".
