I knew how to mix before I even thought about buying gear.

I learnt to beat match on PCDJ.

Edit: I bet they brought it with mum's money.

I learnt on two Akai (supposedly) direct drive pieces of shit and some piece of uber shit mixer I don't even recall anymore. It was a mates gear who wasn't using it at home as he was living with/taking care of his sick mother. Set it up at our pad, taught me the basics, 1 month later I bought a better mixer (only a shitty Berhinger VMX 300, but it was still a HUGE step up! ) 3 months later I bought a second hand pair of 1200's from a club which was closing down for $900 for the pair, with carts/needles. Years later when I knew I was serious about this I got the nuts equipment.

So my first set in a club was a treat with the gear playing on being better than mine...these peoples would mostly be in for a shock when they first gig somewhere!

Yeah, this is the problem, if these kids get used to relying on their effects and looping skills then they hit the clubs and find the gear will be different in every venue. If you learn to play without the effects, loop & maybe even avoid the crossfader you will have a lot easier time playing your first couple of club gigs!

Yeah, I don't know what's wrong with starting off with a basic setup? It's the must-have-it now gen to add to their collection of shit that their parents have bribed them with...to add to their collection of iPods, iPhones, roller shoes, scooters, skull candy headphones and designer clothes.

Do you go buy a Ferrari when you learn to drive? There's no need for top level gear to learn to DJ...it makes you a better, more adaptable DJ if you learnt on crap setup. Learn at home a your flash shit, get your first gig at some small club with run down 1200 MKII's which still have the zero click and wabble in pitch in or around zero, a Pioneer CD3000 dual unit and some shit house orange plastic Vestax mixer and watch them shit themselves and not be able to play.

Learn on crap, playing on awesome = easy
Learn on awesome, playing on crap = nightmare

There is no need for top gear, but it's certainly easier to learn to beatmatch on 1200's than it is on bottom range american audio turntables.
And if I was loaded, yes, a ferrari may have been a good car to learn in.
If you have the money, or if your parents wanna spend that much, why do you have problem with people learning on good equipment?

I think the point has been made that if you're only used to fully functioning top of the line gear with all the whistles and bells, when you step up to something a little more modest then you might find yourself at a bit of a loss.

so if I was 15 and daddy (who makes $500000 a year from internet porn sites) asks what I want for christmas, do I ask for the pioneer cdj1000mk3 and djm800, or just go for the cdj200's and behringer mixer?

i guess we don't actually know what level of risk investing that much into gear is for them.

In our business you just can’t predict what your going to play on, the mixer could be a cheap 2ch with 2band channel eq and a busted crossfader or it could be a rotary style mixer with no channel EQ and no crossfader. Is good to keep inmind that none of the profesional mixers available have effects as standard and every mixer has a different layout! I still find it hard to deal with the 4band EQ on the XONE92 and I have played on one for 6hours every Saturday for 4years now!

The CD players could be Pioneer, Dennon, Numark, Technics etc. even turntables aren’t always SL1200 I rocked up to a gig a couple of years ago to play on some Numark belt drive decks.

DJing is a job and you are going to have to deal with the gear in the venue unless you take your own, though you always have the option to find out the gear when you are booked to do the gig and tell them you don’t want the gig because of the gear (I do this a lot these days) but you will alienate yourself for that venue!

That’s what gives kids a woody these days!!!!!! For me it was a MP24 after seeing John Course & Stuart Allen playing on one at Chevron, it kicked the ass out of my scratchmaster, strangely enough back then I was just a scratch & hip hop DJ but the RANE was solid and sounded incredible!

It is strange in today’s world that these kids don’t realize that their favorite DJ’s get paid for endorsing those pieces of junk!

I don't have a problem with it, it's just overkill.

Good turntables, sweet, makes sense, but there is just no need for a DJM 800 to learn on...I'd place money on someone learning the basics of beat matching and mixing on a 2 channel piece of shit FASTER than someone who is put in front of the bells and whistles of an 800.

no, not everyone does want to play in a club ... so why not just stick to Winamp and the crossfade function? (it'd produce a better mix than the one displayed in the OP)

My brain (and heart) says to me that if you love music that much ... then buy music and support artists by attending gigs and buying their tunes (and not moaning about the price tag)

To me, buying pieces of kit that eclipse your actual skill level just screams of wanting to subscribe to an image rather than pursuing a passion for music ... presenting your lack of skillz on said pieces of kit for the world to see tends to re-enforce this in my mind.

I think the point has been made pretty clearly it's not about having and not having. I'd be in the market for CDJ800s not 1000s because 1000s are overkill for my needs. (but in reality a DVS is on my shopping list). I can honestly say i have no desire to own a DJM800 either. I've never had to use more than 3 channels.

For me, it's by no means about being pissed at the kid.

This is simply about highlighting how DJ culture has fostered this domineering attitude of having the "right kit" or the "industry standard" as a priority in approaching DJing ,as a hobby or professionally, rather than developing a passion for exploring, collecting and sharing music that extends beyond a munted weekend.

Funkedub why does it matter what equipment he buys/is given. All this stupid preachy crap, you arent the center of dj culture. Why do you have to want to play in clubs to earn the right to have the equipment? I never wanted to play out anywhere, I still spent over $3000. You take all this shit way too seriously, ease up

Spot on; if you have the money and want the gear go for it I like cars, I buy them, do them up and waste a tone of money in the process, and nobody understands that either but no one picks on me for it! As far as DJing in a club goes, I dont think the two are connected, I dont practice at home and I havent practiced at home since the 80s when I was scratching. The gear we have at home is all about our toys, our love of music and playing it, it really therapy (I wonder if Medicare has a rebate available on DJ gear).

I have lots of clients who have decks at home and don't aspire to play out and good on them I say!

This kids mixing is crap but he will learn like the rest of us, his only mistake is posting a video of his crap mixing,,,,,, A rather BIG mistake but thats life and I hope he doesnt get too much flack for it and keeps at it!

It's not preachy ... it's just not the usual diatribe of "lol ... meme ... pat on the back/flame ... lol meme" that is the norm on here. I'm actually offereing some sound reasoning for my opiions and not ranting and raving from a pulpit, remaining oblivious of the beliefs of others.

What's wrong with applying a bit of critical thought and discourse on the matter? I don't really see you offering anything of substance to counter the ideas i put forward other than "leave the kids alone" . I suspect this is the case because, as you've just admitted, you might be one of the people i'm leveling my sights at with this critique.

At no point did i say "you have to want to play in clubs to earn the right to use this equipment" or even come close.I tend to think your analysis of my points is blurred by your own history on the matter.

I've also never claimed to be the center (sic) of DJ culture ... once more, you're making leaps of logic and reasoning about my stance and ideas that aren't there and i question why you do.

I actually find this kind of discussion fun and interesting regardless of your concerns about me taking it all too seriously. Beats the hell out of another "lol, wot mixer??" thread. I think you're the one that needs to lighten up

For some reason i watched the second vid first and thought that some of the comments were a bit harsh......then i watched 10secs of the first one...HOLLY CRAP, i understand that everyone starts somewhere but seriously.........what the hell would make you put it on Youtube.....??!

My 2 cents worth....I think learning on a simple set-up is easier as you have less to worry about, it doesn't need to be a poverty pack setup, but 2 x 1200's and a basic 2ch mixer is all good!

My 2 cents worth....I think learning on a simple set-up is easier as you have less to worry about, it doesn't need to be a poverty pack setup, but 2 x 1200's and a basic 2ch mixer is all good!

First video has been removed no lolz for me. Second video, sounds just like any other tech/minimal mix i have heard

macc4 : Just note to yourself though, it's taken me 6 & 1/2 years to get there ... you've clocked up 40% of that in 18 months

TBD: that's not the be all and end all as far as the point of this thread goes and i'm pretty sure my other posts here do a whole lot more than "lol, n00b!"
