Grandmaster Roc Raida Dies
Shit that's sad. It was from complications due to surgery on a martial arts accident.

"Anthony Williams p/k to the world as The Legendary Grand Master Roc Raida has passed away unexpectedly today Sept 19 2009. He is survived by his wife, 3 lovely daughters, mother and friends. Raida was recently in an mixed martial arts accident, something that he has been practicing for several years. Although he had under gone 2 surgeries with great success, was released to an inpatient physical therapy facility and was in great spirits the past few days. This morning he started to have complications and passed. The family asks for privacy at this time." (Nah Right)"

dam rip,

as more of these guys start passing away do you think the art of turntablism will one day die away and button pushers and email checkers will become the new grandmasters?

^^ what he said, plenty of new, young turntablists out there doing amazing work. dj kentaro is only 27 and he got the highest score in dmc history at the age of twenty.

but enough about that.

no disrespect to Kintaro, as he is an ill DJ - But seriously wtf is up with the DMC's nowdays..

I just watched 08 world championships DVD last week, and to my ears all DJ's just sounded terrible, except for one young kid with emo hair that did a cool dubstep routine (He didn't win)..

The rest was just pure noisey scratching, ultra fast doubles and chops - Just sounded bad!

Roc Raida was one of the finest competitors this competition ever saw - and one of the last DJ's in my mind who could actually bring the funk - make a routine actually sound nice..

Now, before people flame me - I've had an interest in turntablism since long before "turntablism" was even a word, and even entered in my fair share of battles many years ago - It just seems that now days it's just waaay to technical, and not about the funk anymore.. What happened to battle DJ's? Try listening to the audio (and not watch the video) of any recent routines..

So in my opinion - The DMC's lost their importance a number of years back.. It's now a bunch of nerdy scrtach fanatics who really do nothing to move the art of DJ'ing forward anymore - And I'd guess that if you put most of those recent "world class turntablists" infront of a packed dancefloor for 2 hours, they would clear the room..

sorry for thread hyjack..
