Much like trance is a big genre, psy trance is a big genre. There's a huge degree of "psy" stuff these days that is infinitely closer to the routes of trance than the pop-trance stuff the big guns are often playing. Likewise there is all sorts of psy that is twisted and not really taht much like club trance at all.

Here's some good examples of different psy to see just how broad it goes:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XaScmr4-FjU - melodic and trancey, fits with club trance really well
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pFAo...eature=related - outright psytrance, heaps of squelchy layers, a heaps earthy/forest rave kinda influence. This is on the darker side.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCBWz...eature=related - dark psy, almost psycore. Lots of samples, built on rolling dark basslines. 150-160bpm
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flxH6m1k_Zg - progressive psy, fit easily in to a prog trance or just prog set. This sound is massive atm - Ace Ventura is the king of it IMO. Gutted I'm still looking for work and didn't get to see him at Maitreya.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7QDOemWoUY - older psytrance, one of the genre's defining tracks performed live (Hallucinogen - LSD)

I first got in to psy - early Infected Mushroom (namely The Gathering LP) was my entry in to EDM. From there I discovered club trance and on to house and prog later. I went off psy for a few years but have come back to it a lot in the last 2yrs or so as it really encompasses what mature EDM is all about to me. Dance floor destroying, thoughtful, complex or simple, music for heads to listen to. I still listen to a bit of club trance, but most of the club trance sets out now have too much cheese. Even if 1-in-3 tracks is a vocal fluffy piece, it ruins the set for me.

these days i'm pretty sure anyone into psy hates infected... they're the equivelant of tiesto in the trance scene:

used to be ok, horribly cheesy and commercial now, and all the n00bs still seem to like them cause they don't know the good stuff...

^ Yes but Infected have an incredible live stage presence and an equally incredible guitarist.

They're not psy trance, or purveyors thereof, however.

yeah Infected are a fucking rock band.
I had to wait for them to finish at Stereosonic before PVD. I don't get where the psy link is with them. Good part was that heaps of people fucked off when IM finished.

Yeah.... these days.

I was just responding to DJ_LG's comment about not seeing the Psy link...... IM's stuff from a few years ago is brilliant Psy.

And at least they havent just sat there doing the same shit over and over again. Not my thing these days but I respect the fact they have moved forwards with their ideas and music.

IM are the pioneers of taking psy trance to the mainstream. Even more than the likes of 1200 Micrograms and GMS, IM really took psytrance out as a kind of music that was known by a big variety of EDM listeners.

Listen to The Gathering or Classical Mushroom. Then listen to I'm The Supervisor or that latest rubbish they released last year. Totally different. It all started turning sour after B.P. Empire, and each release has gotten more mainstream over the years. I'm The Supervisor onwards is pretty much pop-rock-dance fusion of some description. The only thing psy about them anymore is the retained name (which is an awesome band name).

The Gathering in particular is a masterpiece. Probably my favourite EDM album of all time. Intricate, dark, well produced, quirky ... To this day I can still put on a good pair of headphones, get fucked up, close my eyes on the couch and feel like I'm raving somewhere that looks like the forest moon of Endor.

The downside to this is that people listen to modern IM and think it's psytrance. Which it's not - at all. To their credit they now distance themselves from psytrance entirely, but due to the name and the history people still link them with psy.

OK so I got in touch with the producer 'Zyce' who gave me a remix/remake pack for Zyce & Ovnimoon - Stereo Space.

Basically want to keep the vibe/structure, but give it more of a mainroom trance sound, so I can mix it with my other driving stuff without it sounding like I shifted to full blown psy-trance.

What do you guys think so far?

Im not a production whiz, but I really like it so far. Sounds as if you have made the bass louder, which I think is a good move- I see alot of it in activa's tune which are all main room stuff.

A tune that has been great for me is magnus-first born- crosses over between uplifting and psy really well, hopefully you can do something similar mate

Hell yes! That tune is a winner too.. Actually thinking of playing that at United Colors Of Trance. See how I go with this Zyce tune.. might do a remake of Magnus too

Does anyone know the lyrics to JOOF - Nervous breakdown ( Original remix) ?

Edit: Got it:

The mind is a labyrinth, ladies and gentlemen.
A puzzle.
And while the paths of our brain are plainly visible.
Its ways deceptively apparent.
Its destinations, unknown.
Its secrets, still secrets.
And, if we are honest.
It is the lure of the labyrnth that draws us to our chosen field, to unlock those secrets.
Others have been here before us and have left us signs.
Bt we, as explorers of the mind, must devote our lives and energies to going further.
To tread unknown corridors in order to find the ultimate solution.
We have to see.
We have to know.
