What is the point of UAD these days with so much processing power? They make sick plugins but watch them go native in the near future.

I haven't used them myself, but my understanding is that few other plugins hold a candle to them, sound wise.

I can't see the point of the cards nowadays. They are both expensive and low powered. I mean the UAD2 solo can run 1 stereo Massive Passive eq. So the cost of the card and plug is around what $750 for one instance? Not far off the price of a decent hw unit (obviously not a mp) and you can't track through it because of latency.

The prices for the plugins are expensive. All the latest ones are $249 or so, again on top of the overpriced card.

I'm not saying they aren't good, but so are lots of others that are native. Softube, waves, Cytomic etc.

All i can say in regards to the UAD plugs is that they are very very high quality. The plugs i have for the UAD arent available in native form.

got a NEW (early 2010) MAC Pro now to make the jump to snow leopard 100% (i feel safe now that evertying is working might upgrade to lion in few years lol) but wait....no fire wire 400.....

^^ What are they (ie. early 2010) selling for? Seems like they'd be a good buy as surely these machines are just about capable of most things thrown at 'em?

And FW400 is only an adaptor cable away (or perhaps you knew that?)/

i got it for $1500, its only a quad but hyper threading plus the logic 64bit trick make it a beast of a machine compared to my old 3ghz quad. i know FW 400 is an adapter the trick is finding one long egnough to go to my Powercore

Yea works ok, though the LFOs seem to stuff around with the sound when I play a MIDI through it. Seemed fine in the shop. I'm wondering if it's a sync issue with my soundcard (Presonus Firebox).

Is there an easy way to hard reset it? I know you can hold the OSC Shape button when turning on but that doesn't do much.
It's got OS 6.5 installed, do you guys use that or an older OS?
I wouldn't mind getting the thing into original shape by wiping it and reinstalling everything. Good idea?

The Nords leads sit better in the mix because they are so clean and crisp, plus it does some amazing 4 part sounds. The pads on the VC are amazing though, as is the bass.

1. What master volume do you keep it at when playing/recording?
2. If you use Ableton Live, what Gain level do you set in the External Instruments plugin?

master volume is always zero
my template channel volume is -12 db - then adjust afters
i record all my gear around the -12 to -17db no gain in the box - if i need to crank stuff I'll use the mixer

Nah I meant the volume knob on the actual virus, not the input channel in Ableton. You wouldn't hear anything otherwise.

Unless most software is optimised for 4-core and ignores any cores higher. You get too many cores fighting for cache and bus access, resulting in congestion.

You can't just look at it this way. Look at Intel and AMD, the Intel i7 Quads are way better optimized than the AMD Hexacores.

software is unlikely to be written/optimised for a specific number of cores - normally you're going to use as many cores as the OS/environment will let you. you generally don't write code that says "core 1 will do this, core 2 that".

^ Which is what peeves me off about a lot of software marketed today with a 'multi-core approach,' when really the software isn't fully controlling how the cores are used, as much of it is dictated by the OS. Not an expert on the matter but I'm fairly confident any more than 4 cores is going to show very, very little improvement.
