deepchild plays Berghain, Berlin w/Alex Under & Prosumer
Oh lord. I had the pleasure of playing the brilliant Panoramabar a couple of years back, for Jesse Rose's brilliant Made To Play monthly.

Looks like I'm BACK....this time, to drop science at the infamous Berghain floor. Hugeness. Gulp.

We already have a sizeable crew of the Sydners tekk-no crew coming by for this one. Woot!

I guess I should learn to mix.

Line-up /
Berghain - Trapez Labelnacht

Deepchild DJ-Set
Alex Under LIVE
Triple R aka Riley Reinhold
Roland M. Dill
Norman Nodge

Panoramabar
Oliver Deutschmann

Berghain Sonntags 25-07-10 ab 21:00
Ben Ivory LIVE
Promoter /
OstGut GmbH

Trapez, run by Riley & Jacqueline Reinhold, has now reached the100th release and will have its 10 year anniversary in 2010. It started in 2000 as a DJ tool label dealing with the DJ necessities and nightlife.

The label first signed Anton Kubikov/ SCSI9 who released under different monikers, sometimes in collaboration with other Russian artists such as Milutenko. After a period of dubby tech house releases Trapez discovered Akufen, the first label to do so in Europe, and recorded the Psychometry series with him.

His work inspired a whole new generation of artists to experiment with micro sounds and we believe it actually cleared the way for the minimal sound.
Artist like Oliver Hacke and Jeff Samuel changed the style of Trapez and gave it a new funkiness. Records with Gabriel Ananda lead to a big following in the UK.
Later a collaboration with Spanish artist Alex Under lead to 4 Eps and a whole LP on Trapez and established him as one of the leading minimal techno acts worldwide.

Actual artist that joined Trapez have contributed a modern and fresh direction such as: Roland M. Dill, Jakob Hilden, Deepchild, Tom Dazing, Florian Meindl, Gow, Raw Hedroom and Tim Green.

Loose and fruity.

Forgive me, for I know not what I blap. I couldn't resist the Kanye-jack.

Am I still legitimately 'techno' enough for Berghain?

Actually, don't answer...;P Such a brilliant club tho - top of their game, truly an honor to play there again.

Ain't nuthin' but house-music, y'all. This is actually far more of a "Panoramabar" stylee mix - expect things to get a little more serious and teeechnnooo for my set at Berghain.

1 Each Step - Deetron vs Seth Troxler
2 Moods (Pezzner Mix) - Matthew Brian
3 Re Moved Lockdown - Guido Schneider/Kanye West
4 Pick A Chick - Harry Axt
5 Fire Still Burning - Dustbowl
6 Disco Bus (Roland M.Dill Remix) - Lucio Aquilina
7 Why So Serious - Francesco Grant, Sasha Carassi
8 Keep Off (Wighnomy Brothers Detroittobrieflyshort remix) - Sycophant Slags
9 Am I - Gaiser
10 Love Rehab feat. Meital De Razon - Chaim

Back in Detroit...
http://www.deepchild.com/blog/?p=1176

I'm sittiing in New York's JFK Airport - struck by the surreality of the fact that only 8 or so hours ago, I departed my beloved Berlin. At present, FOX News is blaring in the departure-lounge, reminding the US that BP have failed, yet again, to dam the ever-widening flow of oil from the Gulf of Mexico.

I can't help but feel that there's some profoundly obvious karmic lesson for us all to learn here. The USA, Gulfs and Oil - they've yet to find any sort of symbiotic relationship. I'm watching wetlands becoming engulfed in what amounts to a virulent testament to our communal greed, and failure to nurture, to adapt, to care. It breaks my heart, reminds me that I'm implicit, somehow, in this perverse food-chain - if not for explicit destruction, than for remaining too-long ignorant of the flaws of the dreams I was bought up to take as Gospel.

Meanwhile (in further gentle irony) I'm traveling to Detroit. Few clearer city's bear testament to the social and economic costs of engineering mythology from the fabric of corporate greed, individualism, and capitalist expansion. Yet I'm going to Detroit to celebrate, with its wider community, one of the most important electronic-music festivals in the world. Detroit Movement (DEMF). What's more, I'm playing my strange part as the only Antipodean invited to contribute my part to the story, this year. This is a strange, strange, state of affairs. I have nothing but kind words...Because as ever, in the industrial heartlands of places like Detroit, I find my angels and hopes and inspirations, whitewashed by stark truth and broken promises. I find stories of artists and imagineers and fringe-dwellers, removed from the aspirational nightmares of wider-America, if only by virtue of circumstance.

It's all too easy to mytholigise places like Detroit, Berlin etc. I know. But there's something which still stirs beneath the waters. I know this simply thru trial and error, experiment over so many years with people and place. It's that simple.

As the oil pours forth, as the car-companies foreclose, so do the dagger-sharp blessings of being reminded that we are not independent units. We ARE each other, our failures and successes and cruelties and graces. This, I think, is part of the reason that I love Berlin so much. New York, London, Tokyo - brilliant big-cities, in their own right....and yet, give me people who's eyes are stung by the light of truth, who's brows are knit in jest and brokeness and dreams, who know how to open their hearts and wallets and stories to strangers like me. You are, you shall remain, my life-changing reason's for being.

Erm, "success" is a very....um...relative term. Hehe. ;P

Let's just say I work hard, earn very little, and am surrounded by amazing friends. Without community-building being a central focus, the game just wouldnt be worth shit.

The traditional myths of 'rockstars' or 'super-star djs' with big label-deals are just bollix...unhelpful entirely! Screw aspiration, let's just take each gig as it comes. This is one thing I found occasionally difficult about the Aussie scene - less supportive for new sounds and risk-taking that Europe, as a general rule. And VERY competitive...which is particularly hard for newer producers and djs. It's a big reason I chose to relocate. Because I'm too old and not trend-following enough to be really in demand in Aus...and it was difficult being told quite often at Aus gigs that I wasnt playing enough Sneaky/Presets/Justice etc. It's just a different mentality abroad. There's a little more space for introducing new sounds, and a little more idea-sharing between producers and djs, which feels like breathing out!

The best thing I've learned in the last few years, is just to put my head down and work, rather than making any 'goals' as such. Just enjoy the ups and downs. I don't know many of us 'full-timers' making any real dosh/savings...yet, somehow, I'm surrounded by an ever-expanding family across the world. Worth more than anything!

Bless. I'm a big advocate for music as 'vocation' rather than as 'aspiration'. It's its own reward. Process, process, process...screw the rest - anything aside from making music for the joy and challenge of it is ripping off your peeps, your audience, and yourself IMO.

Why thank you sir! I had no idea until I saw it posted there. Hehe. It's my mix with a Kanye West accapella in the middle - quietly subversive as it's a Berghain promo-mix. Muahahahahahah.... I'm playing LIVE there in a couple of weeks. Mad little Aussie posse coming along actually. I better get Jackin'!

Ooooh, I mean, I better get straight-16ths and chin-strokin'...or something...

Berlin to Miami...weekend US shows...
I’m in the skies, only an hour from Miami now, having departed Berlin at 8am this morning. Listenin' to homeboy Hugh Wilson's new album, The Third Sea. Contemporary pop-rock with surprising depth, belying its radio-friendly tone and hi-fi production values. It's honestly refreshing to hear such an accessible hook-heavy musical-framework subverted with some genuine lyrical substance. To my ears, the homage here to U2s early works, especially The Joshua Tree, are evident, and I can't help but feel warmed by this...

I can't help but smile by the wealth of musical-talent I'm surrounded by, and the utter diversity of my artist-friends. Hugh's most certainly cut from a classic pop-cloth, and plying his trade in New York, whilst working concurrently on advertising-gigs, singing and writing for soda-pop companies to subsidize what is surely one of the most difficult industries to turn a coin within'. Lord knows how traditional singer-songwriters manage to support themselves...

Meanwhile, I chuckle in the knowledge that, for many years, I tooled and tweaked the graphic content for so many advertising companies and multinationals also. I started to feel my heart shrink and dry though. Moreover, I confess, I didn't have the emotional tenacity to withstand the feeling that I was selling stuff that people didn't need, to people who didn't need it, overseen by companies who didn't actually care about their product. Of course, the irony of sliding into the, ahem, *morally righteous* world of dj-culture is not lost on me either. I do so-much love electronic-music though, and my ridiculously gracious extended musical-community.

It's the late-nights, alcohol and necessity to be sustainably engaging which I find the most challenging. And so....on my way to Miami, for only a few days, where I'm paid to play music I love at several beachfront clubs, in the height of summer. I'm told that this is 'living the dream', and I'm certainly not arrogant enough to complain.

And yet...and yet...I’ve honestly never bought into these mythologies of affluence and aspiration. In actuality, it was the notion of flaunted privilege and 'artistic fetishism’, which repelled me so strongly from a great deal of pop/rock/dance-music culture when I was younger. The self-important pantheon of artistic 'entitlement' (who's twin-sister is, of course, that of 'nihilism as liberation') is, thankfully passing away, becoming remolded in the blinding light of new-media.

When the tools of production are shared around more liberally, so many have realized that the sublime joy of 'art-making' is not merely the preserve of the rich, famous, nihilistic or 'chosen few'. As sure as birdsong exists, and the shamans countless cultures have spun in ritual abandon, we ARE all the artists, and we are all the art.

Commerce is, another matter entirely. Hugh says that 'the industry is hurting'. In terms of 'industry', especially in its traditional incarnation, he is, of course, correct.

But 'the industry' never was one of stasis, and any security it promised was found only by traversing dark hallways, rigged with trapdoors, tripwires and cold, unrelenting fluorescent lighting.

The 'industries' golden-years of commerce were also accompanied by a distinctly 'closed model' of advertising and distribution - radio-play monopolists, advertising strategists and media-format pimps all drunk at the same swingers-nights, and a wider culture of western aspiration not yet fundamentally frayed. When media is so centralized, we'll buy anything, and we'll become easily co-opted into moralizing about what is beyond morality. Our stories.

The wider-reality is that, in terms of job-security, all who work in the western-world, especially those who trade in information, have been used to the reality of multi-skilling for decades now. I experienced this for years as a designer/digital-whore, and much more so did many of my contemporaries, particularly those on the cusp of the 'gen-X / gen-Y' divide, who neural-pathways weren't seared with digital literacy from their first years. Adapt or die. For better or worse, this seems like a radical contrast from the faith in corporate-loyalty, which my grandparent's generation took for granted.

Enough already. I'm almost in Miami....

Some new dates just confirmed:

Oh my....that...was...EPIC. Easily a couple of thousand showed up, and at 7am there was a lineup outside of around 400 still trying to get in. NUTS. I managed to jack out 2 hours of fairly rampant live-techno - which was so well recieved it surprised me. Infact, the club contacted me today to offer another date in a few months, live on the mainfloor. Madness. Also just booked for Tresor in Feb, if anyone remembers that club?

Roland M Dill and Riley Reinhold smashed it too...such a wonderful Trapez family. Just bliss!

I got to the Berghain at 1:30am but the queue was massive and it took 3hrs to get in. So many people rejected, I have never experienced anything like it. Lucky I finally got in and loved the 30mins of your set I heard. Awesome stuff!!

Ahh, the old bank vault on the west side of Berlin. It was my first nightclub experience in Deutschland back in 2001. I remember first entering downstairs and it was crowded, hot, stuffy, dark and loud. My kinda techno heaven! Respect is due to you sir, for bringing your dynamic sounds to so many of the spiritual homes of techno. I'll have to inform my mate Rüdiger to catch your Tresor gig.

Oh my - 3hrs, WTF?! ARRRGH! That sucks ass...when I left at 7am there were still around 400 people outside...hectic.

Thanks for waiting it out and catching the end tho'...what an incredible night.

I'm playing again there in a few months...so I guess it went ok. Such a special night for me...thanks so much for turning up.

3hrs...ayayay!

Ahh, thank you. You know, I feel so honored be able to play at Berghain and Tresor...certainly spiritual homes for the sound that's changed my life. You know though - Ive never set foot in Tresor (tho I'm a semi-regular at Berghain, as a punter...especially now its summer!)

Really wonderful for me to play such special places...just feels like coming home.

Liveset was recorded, so when I have the courage I'll go thru it and post up a 1-hour edit or so...

DECIBEL FESTIVAL, SEATTLE: RA REVIEW

"Even a set of high quality techno from Daniel Bell couldn't stop Deepchild from stealing the show at the Shameless showcase. Looking party-ready in a tank top, he alternated between getting down to his own beats and giving the impression he was going to completely lose control of the show. He juggled a dizzying spread of synths, mixers, drum machines and computers, which made his hands look like a fast motion sequence in a movie. At times the countless tracks of audio drifted out of synch and his jaw became so clenched and eyes so wide open that his face looked absolutely panicked. What made his performance so intriguing was that it was impossible to tell if he was intentionally hamming it up for the crowd or if the wheels were actually about to come off. In the end, he always corrected things just in time and kept the dance floor in complete rapture with round bass, warm synthesizer tones and sexy vocals."

Haha. Paints a great picture! So which was it? Not sure how you've got everything set up but going by my experiences with hardware everything was probably dangling by a string

Ha, yeah...when I play LIVE, I really play LIVE, you know? I had pretty much the same setup when I performed in the mainroom at Berghain in Berlin earlier this year. 6 stacks of surround-sound Funktion One, and 1500 people keep you on your toes, and make the random machine-spazzes all the more entertaining.

There are ghosts in my machines. And they belch and fart and slurp like naughty children!
