Tech / Game News. For news that doesn't deserve its own thread.
What title says - thought this would be a good place to post or discuss tech/gaming news that doesn't fit anywhere else or deserve its own thread.

First up:

MS adds facebook + social networking to outlook 2010:

Microsoft adds Facebook access to Outlook 2010
Lookout for Facebook
By Lawrence Latif
Wednesday, 17 February 2010, 15:22

SERIAL SECURITY THREAT Microsoft has announced that the next version of its Outlook email client will feature tight integration with social notworking sites.

Through Microsoft's introduction of the Outlook social connector middleware layer, back-end services such as Sharepoint, Windows Live, Facebook and Myspace will be able to push information directly to your inbox. Last year the Vole announced that its Outlook social connector would be released as part of the Office 2010 beta programme in partnership with LinkedIn, however now it seems that Microsoft has managed to sell the big social notworking sites on supporting its gossip delivery platform.

In an Outlook MSDN blog post, Microsoft announced its latest partners, trying to show it's serious about social integration in its popular but often security challenged email application. The blog post goes on to describe in tedious detail how you will be able to look up your contacts history to give you all sorts of questionably useful information, such as when you last interacted with your colleagues.

Unsurprisingly, the Vole is going to be using its Outlook social connector to push content from its almost non-existent social notworking site Windows Live direct to your Outlook email inbox. Vital information such as status updates, profile updates and pictures will be pushed into Outlook right along with messages that might actually mean something to you.

Integrating social notworking together with scheduling and email application has hit the headlines lately with Google's botched rollout of Buzz. While Microsoft is aiming its Outlook social connector at businesses, it should be acutely aware that privacy will have the potential to make or break its rollout of this feature.

For employees the Outlook social connector aims to show "real-time activity" for both social and business networks, so further discretion may be required to avoid privacy problems.

This isn't released yet, as Outlook 2010 will be coming out with the rest of Office 2010 much later this year. There's a beta programme going on at the moment, but Outlook social connector only works on the 32-bit version of Outlook at present.

Actually sounds semi decent.

What a difference a kick up the arse from an abysmal failure (ie. ME2) and a few years can make to a company.

Nintendo still on the warpath

Quote:

EXCLUSIVE - An Australian distributor has been ordered to pay Nintendo over half a million dollars for selling video game piracy tool, the R4 mod chip.

The Federal Court ordered that RSJ IT Solutions cease to sell the chip through its gadgetgear.com.au site and any other sites it controlled, as well as paying Nintendo $520,000 in damages.

Nintendo brought the claim against the gadget accessory distributor and two affiliated respondents Patrick Li and James Li.

The court's ruling further excluded the individual respondents from selling their R4 chips anywhere in Australia, while also ordering them to pay Nintendo an additional $100,000.

They have also been required to file an affidavit by the end of this week identifying all suppliers from whom they purchased their R4 chips.

and posting news too, it seems.

The result of 18 pages worth of CPU benchmarking and testing are in. This shootout compares everything from p4 (not a typo) to core i7. Who won?
Spoiler:
(result, core i5 cheaper than an extreme edition i7 and faster than a pentium 4, amd didn't buy an ad, so i3 wins.)
This is why I don't write news. I couldn't stretch that shit out to 18 pages

In other news, Western Digital quietly slips 1TB 6Gbps desktop drives into it's lineup, without so much as a keynote speech, let alone revolutionising a single aspect of data storage, proving it's only shit products that need hype to sell.

errr mechanical hdd's can't even hit the 3gbps sata2 spec, hence why no one cares, hence why they didn't do a big public launch.

GrewsFlash: The incorrect use of "hence" has exploded on internet forums in recent times. Here are some grammatically correct alternatives to the above post.

"..that's why no one cares, that's why they didn't do a big public launch."

Holy intellectual property, Batman!

Sony's lodged a patent for an LCD game controller. Like, a little touchscreen controller for platform games. Big fucking deal, you say. Well block your gun-jumping hole. It's not just for playstations. It's universal. Which means you'll be able to control the entire universe with it, as far as I can tell.

Image Space Photon Mapping, a fast new method to produce light effects and light sources in 3D worlds. The pair's paper, "Hardware-Accelerated Global Illumination by Image Space Photon Mapping," won the Best Paper award at the recent Conference on High Performance Graphics. In a statement, McGuire described their achievement:

The computer-generated 3D graphics in films like Avatar are visually indistinguishable from real objects. They are hard to compute, however: the Photon Mapping algorithm used in most film productions requires about one day to compute every second of film. Our new Image Space Photon Mapping transforms that algorithm to a space where it can be evaluated in a fraction of a second. This enables nearly cinema-quality lighting for interactive applications like videogames.

An Italian judge found three Google executives guilty of violating the privacy of an Italian student who was bullied in a 2006 video posted on Google Video. The video resided on the site for two months before it was brought to Google's attention and pulled. None of the executives were involved in any way in the making of the abhorrent video. Nevertheless, Italian judge Oscar Magi sentenced the execs to a six-month prison sentence but cleared them of defamation charges. No jail time is expected, however, since any sentence of less than 3 years is typically commuted in Italy for those without a criminal record.

That's crazy talk.

hey on the note of paint software, is there something like this for macs (my mum has one boooo)? i mean a painting program that sort of emulates real brushes and shit. preferrably one that doesn't cost more than $100. i am assuming no freebies because apple is a giant wallet munching institution from hell.

Solid. I havn't gone back since I first installed it. However, if you're a plugin whore then you may find it lacking.

it works, but it has a tendency to crash if you have several tabs all running flash simultaneously. hardly ever crashes with 1 instance.

Chromium Wheel Smooth Scroller and adblock are the only two i'm running at work. can't remember home ones, but chromium wheel smooth scroller is essential. you need to restart the browser for it to work though.

it makes the browser scroll like safari on iphone
