If I see a tune that I like, that is otherwise tricky to find digitally, I won't hesitate in picking up the 12".

When Vinyl Warning were clearing out their old stock, I bought quite a lot of discounted tunes - even, if I liked just a bit of the sample.

Think it might be time for a vinyl mix soon, actually!

pretty sure vath does. superstyle deluxe was playing records last time i saw him play, but for the most part, even the old school hip hop djs have moved to serato now.

i still only like mixing vinyl. bought serato, didn't like it. it's gathering dust somewhere in my living room.

damn straight, supporting London Elektricity the other night and there was no cd's in sight all night (i was quite impressed tbh). 2 dj's used serato but both myself and LE were on 100% wax.

dj hype was another touring dj that was 100% vinyl too, not enough of them imo. its way to easy for everyone to have the latest and greatest song these days, i would love to see the majority of digital dj's do a day of crate diving to pick up tracks.

^^ now that you mention LE, doesn't timo maas still use vinyl? i remember years ago when myspace was still cool, they both had that "stop the war on vinyl" page in their top friends.

problem with that is they would just write the track names down and rapidshare search when they get home.

White labels FTW

I have just gone back to vinyl after years of cd's.

But I play on either vinyl, cd's, traktor or ableton....depending on my mood.

Hood is coming to town soon. I believe he still uses only vinyl.

I started off digital. Now I tend to browse record stores first, more so than Beatport or Whatpeopleplay etc. If I find a release where I like pretty much every track I will buy it on vinyl but if I just like one track I will buy it digitally.

I still use vinyl too, heaps of good tunes still getting released on wax...I love the format and don't really enjoy "mixing" cd's. I might start using vinyl with Traktor soon to play some unreleased trax from my labels...

So much great stuff being released on vinyl, I tend to look for a release on vinyl rather than digitally only buy a release digitally if I can't find a vinyl copy.

Often you can get the vinyl album pack for cheaper than the same release on cd, and as a bonus some labels give you a download card for the wav/mp3 files
Last one I bought even worked out slightly cheaper than buying the whole digital release online (not that I would have purchased the whole album digitally)
And it came with stickers

I think DnB and dubstep Djs are probably in the majority when clinging to vinyl compared to other genres.

It's romanticising it a bit, but it's exciting to watch them flip though a wad of dubplates, white labels and acetates instead of a wallet of CDs. This also adds to the reason for getting off your ass to see the DJs live ... if there's only 2 dubplates and no digital versions, then you ain't going to hear that track anywhere except from one or 2 DJs, and if they hold down a residency, then that's the only club you're going to get to hear that track.

DVS FTW though

Have never downloaded a tune in my life... Mate came over last night with some tunes he made on CD... had to hook the DVD player up to my mixer. Just like having a physical track i suppose + find mixing on cd's a bit boring. What ever though

True, I think those genres are the only ones that have remained orthodox about it. Hip Hop used to be that way, but since the arrival of serato etc.. a lot of old DJs have been converted to the new technology.

IMO, pretty much any DJ that listens to, and enjoys the music of the pre-2000s, and especially the pre 1990s period is going to play vinyl, or at least own vinyl.

Cos, really…vinyl nowadays is a very much music lovers thing more than anything else.

If you love more than one genre and you love music from more than one period of time, you will probably have some interest in owning and DJing with vinyl.

Vinyl enthusiast here. Although I tend to only collect records as apposed to mix them now as most of my music is pretty easy to find digitally and I have a thing about keeping my records in mint condition. The records I pick up at record stores still get a play here and there but its been a while since I've ventured to Spank! or Central Station. Also I've found myself collecting LPs as apposed to EPs over the last 12 months as having a hard copy pwns an itunes download.. Although my fear that all digital music will be lost will most probably not be realised, I'm prepared.

I still buy vinyl and still mix it a lot at home but these days half the time the decks at clubs etc are either shit house or aren't even there to begin with so pretty much have to rely on CDs which is a shame because I prefer vinyl.

I'v found the same problem, plus also living down the Canberra, can only really get it on-line so we miss out on just browsing though hundreds of toons in store, and what we do get in our shops is usually pretty limited

the cost makes you think harder before you buy though - I reckon if i did download tunes I'd spend the same amount end up with HEAPS more tunes and half of them I wouldn't buy on vinyl... vinyl = quality control IMO

exactly. A cd full of tunes costs more than a piece of vinyl, but is worth nothing.

I know Derrick Carter still uses vinyl when he does extended sets, but for festivals he just brings cds.

Personally, i love vinyl and use it any chance i can get, have a fair sized collection so its easy to pull out old stuff i havent touched in years. I haven't bought any new vinyl in a few years, though. Don't have the cash for it like i used to.

Traktor scratch and Serato are keeping vinyl alive, but technology and top names using it less and less will eventualy kill it i reckon.

I'll only buy vinyl if it's a tune that I really fall in love with.

I've stuck to digital these days because I tend to get "sick" of certain tracks/styles when I go through phases and end up filtering them out, and I don't have the money to waste on constantly buying vinyls.

I do miss playing vinyls though. I know it's the "cop-out" way but I will be buying Traktor/Serato and some 1200's to use at home, but will still take my CD's out with me to play for the efficiency..

not likely, vinyl sales have been increasing every year for years

2007 + 36% http://www.wired.com/entertainment/m...eningpost_1029
2008 + 100% http://www.prefixmag.com/news/vinyl-...rrying-/21604/
2009 + 89% http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/musi...t-in-2009.html
2010 + ??? http://www.myce.com/news/Vinyl-recor...s-up-87-10569/

each % is an increase of sales over the previous year, and apparently 2008 set a new record for the amount of vinyl sold in a year ever, that record now breaks every year

^So many bands release on vinyl and no one knows about it. I had to buy a CD last month and I felt like i had been robbed... Can't get over people who buy a truck load of cds, rip them - then lose/throw them out , for a fee extra bucks can get the same thing on vinyl and most come with a free digital download anyway. Wish all vinyl came with free downloads... would push sales up heaps.

It's sort of irrelevant, as I don't think the percentage was ever high. There is also a shitload more djs (more specifically cd djs) than there was 5-10 years ago

Wow what a good response!!
good to see people still use and love to collect vinyl don't think it will ever die, i know for a lot of working dj's its a bit of a hassle lugging records around and the fact that lots of places turntables are fucked or they dont even have any, but i have always enjoyed watching a dj spin vinyl flipping through his box picking out the next tune slamming it down on the turnie cueing up and letting rip!!
I still spin vinyl at home but dont buy it much any more last lot i got was when vinyl warning shut down got a heap of bargins too, wish it was that cheap all the time.
The only reason i dont buy much vinyl is my current fianancal situation (mortage, child, mrs not working) just dont have the spare cash anymore so i am glad i built a healthy collection when i had the chance, i'm also glad i bought some cdj's so i can still buy some new tunes but i still love digging through my collection and pulling out tunes to play, when you pay 20 bucks for one track you make sure its a good one.
Witch brings me to my next question;
if the younger generation of dj's who out lay a fair bit of cash for their setup, would they have botherd getting into it if they had to spend the same amount on the music they play ?

I love using vinyl but it was getting too expensive for me to keep buying them. I just got back to using turntables again (using Traktor Scratch Pro). And it's so good using vinyl again (well sort off vinyl)

I only use vinyl as I wanted to learn how to beat match first before learning anything else.

It shits me though as I can never find the songs I really want on vinyl and yes I play trance

lol with your name trancemuppet i would be supprised if you didn't play trance!!
Good to see you wanted to learn on vinyl and only use it but i had to give in about 5 years ago when i bought my first cdj cause i had heap of cd's i couldn't use in a mix cause they wern't released on vinyl or i missed out when it was released so frustrating when you you want something on vinyl and you cant get it.
i ended up getting a second cdj a few years later cause after i started downloading music it was getting frusrating mixing a new download to old vinyl ....
