What in the fuck!!??

What makes those cocksmokers so special? Just because they didn't like particular laws.

Fuck that. I'm declaring myself Prince Pussy Pounder (the first) and will have my own flag that has a huge, worn out, busted snatch as it's logo.

Suicides from jumping off the Empire State Building

The fence around the observatory terrace was put up in 1947 after five people tried to jump during a three-week span.[44]

On May 1, 1947, 23-year-old Evelyn McHale leapt to her death from the 86th floor observation deck and landed on a United Nations limousine parked at the curb. Photography student Robert Wiles took a photo of McHale's oddly intact corpse a few minutes after her death. The police found a suicide note among possessions she left on the observation deck: "He is much better off without me … I wouldn’t make a good wife for anybody". The photo ran in the May 12, 1947 edition of LIFE Magazine[45] and is often referred to as "The Most Beautiful Suicide". It was later used by visual artist Andy Warhol in one of his paintings entitled Suicide (Fallen Body).

On December 2, 1979, Elvita Adams jumped from the 86th floor, only to be blown back onto the 85th floor and left with a broken hip.

If someone here has a Wikipedia account, they should log in and make an addition to this page.

It mentions the Butterfingers song "Yo Mama", but not The Pharcyde song "Ya Mama". And it really should be:

Wow, I have never seen that before. Amazing photo.

I think I will have to remind myself of that if I ever feel stressed/down/annoyed etc.

All life is but a pale blue dot.

The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there – on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds.
Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.

The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand.
It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known."

I found this thread great. It motivated me to get out of complacency that I get into when I'm surfing the net a lot, where I just go to the same sites all the time.

I read a lot of interesting stuff. So in return, something I was reading earlier tonight that gave me a real "a-ha!" moment:

http://www.messybeast.com/cat_talk2.htm

Quote:

Humans love eye contact - it is friendly. For a cat, prolonged eye contact is an assertive, or even threatening, signal. The classic case is when several people are in a room for a social occasion and the host's cat walks in. It unerringly goes towards the person who doesn't like cats. Is it simply being perverse? The answer is in eye contact. Cat lovers will be watching the cat, hoping it goes to greet them. Those who don't particularly like cats will ignore it, hoping it will leave them alone. For the cat, the eye contact made by the cat lovers is somewhat threatening. It avoids them. The people who don't particularly like cats are not making eye contact - to the cat, they are signalling that they pose no threat. They are being polite in cat terms, so it goes to socialise with them.

That's what was so perplexing for me.

It made my skin crawl a little. Is the dude some politically minded robot who's trying to enforce some kind of damage control? A man just killed himself. How could that be his initial reaction?

I guess some people are naturally calmer in horrific situations, and are able to calm others from becoming hysterical.

I think it's a rational thing to say, strange choice of words, but it would be a traumatic thing to see in person, and how easily people start to panic due to sheer shock.

I was more surprised how small the hole was that it left, and the amount of blood that gushed out.

Carl Sagan's untimely death was such a massive loss to society, there are few people who have his level of intellect and comprehension of science with the ability to condense and relate it to the wider populace in an engaging manner.

I wish I were an artist.
to live in dark corners of beautiful cities.
music to coat my ears and beat my heart.
passion, love and splatters of paint.
coffee cups, cobble stones and soft clouds of smoke.
There is so much beauty in this world.

Not much information here but this guy has apparently talked 160 odd people out of killing themselves. That's the sort of achievement you could be proud of looking back at the end of your life eh? Not just 'worked for 50 years then played some golf'.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_misconceptions

Everyone needs to read this list of common misconceptions, then stop talking bullshit.

Things I hate hearing/reading: We only use 10 percent of our brains. We evolved from monkeys. Men think about sex every 7 seconds...

And if you actually believed that fish have memory of 2-3 seconds, I hate to say it, but you really are a fucking idiot.

if you like gruesome art:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Body_worlds
the artist behind body worlds: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gunther_Von_Hagens

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marc_Quinn

Quote:

Quinn's self portrait "self" is his signature piece in the art world. A frozen sculpture of the artist's head made from 4.5 litres of his own blood, taken from his body over a period of 5 months.
He is one of the Young British Artists (YBAs) and is known for his innovative use of materials to make art, including blood, ice, faeces, etc., his use of bringing scientific developments into art, and his designs for "discussion-generating" artworks.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony-Noel_Kelly

Quote:

Anthony-Noel Kelly (born 1956) is a British artist who was found guilty of the theft of body parts from the Royal College of Surgeons, which he had used to make moulds for sculptures. He was sentenced to nine months imprisonment in 1998, and the case raised issues of the ethics of art and the legal status of body parts used for medical research.

and couldn't find a wiki for these so just these links:

http://www.impactlab.net/2009/05/27/...ndrew-krasnow/

Quote:

The artist creates flags, lampshades, boots and other everyday items from the skin of people who donated their bodies to medical science. Krasnow says that each piece is a statement on America’s ethics.

Imagine running up to the bakery around the corner and coming across bread shaped like body parts. Sound yummy? Artist Kittiwat Unarrom creates just that; gruesome works of art out of bread.
Kittiwat Unarrom has a master's degree in fine arts and creates bruised and battered heads, feet and other internal organs at a bread shop in Thailand.

Just watched a documentary about this bitch, on the crime channel. How someone could keep up a lie like this is beyond me.
