Isnt mixed in key sponsered by ableton and serato also? So no mixing skill involved. Just pressing buttons, which seems to have been one of the main criticisms of the your shot comp judging by other posts.

theres much more to mixing than beatmatching... it is easy to sound shit on serato or ableton also.

brendan i can tell your a cool kid deep down
No, but you get my point, there is no skill in getting through to the selection stage.. all based on first impressions. John Digweed could enter in a mask and could fail at getting through.. but the poor guy would kill it if he did. he gotz tha skillz.

Agreed. There was no real skill pre-requisite with the interview stage.

I had to convince a friend of mine, who didn't make it through, to not feel disheartened, at not making it through.

Whilst I can't confirm the requirement for making it through the interview stage (as I don't know), I can advise that I was entirely honest. I told them that I'd been DJ'ing for quite a long time, and had significant club experience.

Their questions were around the music that I enjoying playing, and also the types of music that can be found on my iPod.

Take from this thread what you will, but if you have any desire to give it a crack, I strongly suggest that you do!

Fvck it I entered!

Quite a while back I was talking to a friend of mine who breaks and repps it pretty hard at most BBoy Jams. I remember him saying that one of his crew members hasn't been entering many Jams despite the fact the dude is dope, reason being he doesn't like certain things about the scene. But my mates mentality was fvck it I'm gonna enter as many Jams as possible rep my crew and rep my style be it I win or lose.

I guess with this comp at least it gives you an opportunity to get out and actually showcase what you can do and isn't totally based on popularity. Or is it? I haven't read the comp criteria haha.

Anyways if I do get a slot I'm just gonna play my style and see what happens. At least at the end of the day I know I did my thing.

I haven't kept a close eye on finer details this time however; to progress to the final 72, you will definitely have to attend the interview, which I understand is at the Greenwood on Sunday morning.

don't get me wrong gigs are awesome to get but i wouldn't give up mixing or producing if the opportunities didn't present themselves anymore (or i would just put on another of my own parties and do things the way i want).

i get worked up because its pissing on the scene.

its offending to anybody that is a dj.

look at it in this pov then.

6 weeks.
teach a group of people to play guitar, bass and drums from scratch.

then they all play at a gig, whoever is the best band wins a residency, a cd on a major label (or whatever), and a gig at big day out.

its total fucking bullshit and pisses on all those other bans that have been practicing and are a SHITLOAD better than the people that have done it in 6 weeks.

seriously, be it known djs in the scene or bedroom bangers, i just dont think someone should be taught in 6 weeks then given such massive opportunities. whether they cater to me or not, that doesnt matter. i just think its wrong.

some interesting comments and perspectives here.

imo i think it's a pretty ludicrous competition that gives huge opportunities to new djs but as myself and i'm assuming most of the other djs on here couldn't give a stuff because they do it for the love of it. who gives a toss if some rookie is getting a shot at the big-time, good on him I say. just do it for the love of it.

how do you think young AFL players feel when theyve been playing for decades and then the AFL clubs turn around and draft basketballers with little to no footy experience because they can jump higher?? most of them keep working and keep playing because they love the game.

no ... this is the scene now.

it goes hand in hand with digital technology maikng DJing more accessible and affordable to every man and his housemate's dog ...

vinyl purists bemoaned digital technology making things "easier" for people to call themselves a DJ ... now the digital generation have to face up to the legacy of the current technological and the social epoch that accompanies it.

This.

I actually had the DJ after me tonight tell me that he had decided to use Traktor so that he could pre-select ALL of his tracks and not worry about beatmatching. He claimed that beatmatching was 'easy', and yet he trainwrecked his first mix as I was using CD's before him - couldn't get the tunes lined up properly without a 'Sync' button.
Really made me feel sick, what an absolute disappointment. No idea at all, spent his entire set staring at the screen of his Macbook.

Nah, see that's a different concept there. These people are being drafted because they are able to bring a potentially advantageous skill to a sport. What current commercial DJ's epitomise is the ability to spam and con a large group of people into coming to a night that they're playing, regardless of whether or not they have the ability to back up their self-induced hype.

I sorta agree with you on the tip the scene in most places is douchy. But blaming face-book is the easy option. I mean at the end of the day it provides another avenue to promote what going down.

It's the DJs themselves who are mornoichomoupintheassfags. Seriously what can be expected when the epitome of the scene is the DJ Mags top 100. Most DJs are nothing more than pop stars except they cater for adults as opposed to 13 year olds.

Now I dunno what's worse being a 13 year old thinking 50cent in the best rapper or being a grown adult with the view that Tiesto is the best DJ.

so, what you're saying is that all the top DJs are moronic fags (because they're successful)? and that's where the real problem lies. we need some real men, with real values, promoting real music to take the scene back to it's true roots?

trouble with that line of thinking is that dance music, and the format it has taken shape on was heavily influenced by disco-loving fags, queens and homos - and those ARE the true roots of dance music

Damn it I just got schooled! I'm off to try and become a donut poker.

Apologies for all anti homo abuse but in all seriousness I don't think the DJ scene is any different to pop music scene.

If you aren't feelin it don't enter.
If you think you're going to be successful in this game and like everything about it you need to see a special doctor.
Either accept there are aspects you don't agree with and hence things you won't be a part of or follow the instructions and get your superstar on.

A lot of different opinions in here.. Let me just say, my brother and I are one lot of the 72 contestants and we are using this as our stepping stone, sure some people may not agree with the competition but at least we get to do something we love, the rest is just a bonus!

noticed this in the competitions section

basically

the way im reading it is.

theyre saying 'anybody can be a dj'
you dont need talent, you just need to play good tunes.

what it is, is they get 72 contestants, teach them how to mix, give them a gig @ greenwood at a special event, then the winner (whoever plays the most popular music) gets a gig @ fmf, an interstate gig,a dj package, a dj set on a MOS download compilation, guest mix on MOS radio, greenwood residency, itm will promote the shit out of you and a years worth of red bull to add to it.

i just find this disgusting to all those people that have taught themselves to dj, and have worked hard at it, have talent and struggle to get gigs because its a tough scene and they need to get out there more.

not just me (i dont avidly look for gigs anyway) but there is loads of them.

and then a competition like this comes around and makes it look like "anybody can be a dj" and that you dont need talent to do it.

its spitting in the face of a profession and absolutely disgusting of itm.

JROD is upset because daddy cannot buy this competition for him.

Isn't a JazzMutant enough? Christmas is coming up soon, maybe he can get you a porsche as well.

Lame, cheesey big room vocal electro house. How can someone expect to become Sydney's "next big DJ" if they just sound exactly the fucking same as the rest of them? What's going to set them apart?

I mean yeah, good on Smirnoff for doing a competition that gives people a go playing in front of a crowd and helps them gain experience in a club setting (which is invaluable - the more you play out, the easier it becomes, so props for giving a lot of new people a chance to play out when it's hard to get gigs in Sydney if you're an up & comer at the best of times), but the promo/hype is way beyond what the competition deserves. I really doubt this chick is going to suddenly skyrocket to the level of Goodwill, Shamus, Sugar Ray etc in their prime, nor stay up top for all that long if there's nothing unique or different about her to the dime-a-dozen Tenzin wannabes that flood the scene on a weekly basis.

I never recall Sugar Ray playing anything remotely cheesey. And yeah, Shamus played big room, cheesey music (and Goodwill would sort of do something between credible and cheese), but when they were big name DJs, there weren't 50 other guys playing exactly the same music as them. So yeah, even though it may have been big tunes, they weren't dime-a-dozen DJs by any stretch of the imagination.

Certainly not as many fucking "DJs" in scene!

Seems to be far too easy to pick it up these days!
