Aye, but it effectively puts us in a three-way battle for two spots (playoff spot notwithstanding), whilst the teams in the mid-east with their nationalised South American donkeys take turns at embarrassing themselves at the World Cup finals every four years.

You actually must be playing in Premier League, or the league under the NSL over there to get matches against those guys

Was just looking through some first team training pictures for Liverpool and googled one of the guys named Brad Smith. Apparently he is a handy Australian LB , could own that position if he develops well.

Quote:

An Australian-born left-back blessed with lightning pace, Smith's rampaging runs forward proved to be a feature of the U18s' play over the course of the 2010-11 season.
The young defender was spotted whilst playing for the same high school as Jack Robinson and combines solid defending with exciting forays forward, which was perhaps typified by a stunning long range effort in a 6-0 rout of Bolton.
Smith's superb form inevitably led to international recognition and he played a key role in England U17s' run to the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Mexico

Still undecided whether to commit to Australia though.

What age has he get to commit to this full international team? It's 21 isn't it? If he's any good it might be a problem considering aside from Cole England aren't exactly blessed with many left backs.

He can play for all the youth teams (probably what he'll do) but I doubt he'll find space between Baines and Bertrand to make the Open Squad - he'll come back here eventually. As long as you don't play a game for one country for the open level, you can still play for another one (Chris Herd can still play for Scotland - but I doubt it)

Pretty sure it's only senior-level, competitive games which rule you out of contention.

There was no mention of the Scotland game in here? (guess I'm not surprised with our performance) But not even Brec's goal?

Media Player
YouTube

One of the best goals I've seen from a Socceroo in a while.

Coverage of the Lebanon game from 3am tomorrow morning, ugh, worst time for live football...

Looking at getting tickets to both WCQ in Sydney against Oman and Iraq for 26th March and 18th June. Two match pass for $72

hadn't seen it actually, I think I was away. what a screamer. nice header from davidson too, too bad it was the wrong goal.

do we have no qualifiers this weekend? or is it just the friendly against lebanon? bit of a waste if so.

edit: September 11 against Jordan.

Worst I seen them play in a very very long time. That 1st half was dreadful just kicking the ball away, long ball after long ball, getting owned by Jordanian pressure, and worst of all they couldn't string 2 passes in a row for the life of them. Defending riddled with errors and I knew they'd score at least 1 goal but to concede 2 says it all. Australia don't deserve to go to the WC with this mentality because it'll just be making up the numbers. Seriously poor performance!

Serious questions need to be asked about todays performance. Ever since Hiddink left, it's been up and down, no consistency. This game was like watching the first ever Asian Cup performance and you know what, back then the Iraqi's beat Australia with the same coach as the Jordanians had today. Australia has a problem against this coach's tactics. He obviously knows how to expose the Socceroos weaknesses.

Hopefully this game is a wakeup call, a big one at that. Next game is a do-or-die must win game. If they lose, you can kiss a comfortable 2nd place good bye and it means Australia will need to either win all remaining games to finish 2nd in group or settle for 3rd and hope the knockout game isn't against a strong team from the other pool.

Well that is some real shit news to wake up to. Gutted. As already said we don't deserve to go to the World Cup if not picking up 3 points in fixtures like this morning. A loss again next match would be kmf

Obviously good mates with Holger.

Maybe i'm tripping but isn't it time for Tommy Oar & the young guns to step up & take the mantle.

Neill and Ognenovski need to go. how they are still around I have no idea. old, and not playing at an acceptable competitive level for their clubs. holger seems like he is trying to play it safe by picking known names, but in reality he is just digging himself a hole. the reason he was brought in was for his experience in terms of bringing through young players with the german youth sides, but he is not even doing it! bah!

I think we need to get used to this.
Said it before, we are falling behind pretty swiftly........
Putting Holman up as our top player says it all.
I have real fears that we'll miss atleast the next 2 WC finals.

Like what Tom Smithies has wrote here, we should be ok for qualification if we win our 3 final home games. However after this morning - Iraq, Jordan or Oman are definitely not going to hold back or fear playing us.

I'm pretty sure he had a brief to manage the generational change, which has been a fucking disaster. That he is calling on the likes of thirty-something year-old Archie Thompson (who has not played since March) speaks volumes about his management of this process.

Broich can be naturalised as an Aussie. He's never represented Germany internationally. Definitely need him in the mid.

Isn't it 3 years in the ALeague or something to get a citizenship? Henrique now can play as an Aussie, but it wouldn't be that helpful seeing as we have Kruse, Nikita, Luckie, Oar, etc.
Broich would be incredible though. It really would

Seems like it's time to bring in young South American and African imports as marquee players. That way they can become naturalised Australians.

Brazil and Nigeria are the world's two biggest football exporters in terms of naturalised players playing for other countries.

Just maybe the younger guys aren't performing ?? Don't know but I think we should be really looking at our really young guys and setup.
Just got too complacent with the golden generation.
