You are seriously out of touch with the demographic and motivations of the people on this forum and you quite obviously don't realise or understand, and hence push your tiresome agenda in your posting here.

Have a nifty ol' day and may all your dreams come true

Yeah this, I could'nt stand working EVERY friday and staurday night and for that to be dependable on my income.

do you actually proof read your posts or just have a random sentence generator that uses the same phrases over and over again?

that aside, could you educate me as to what a "proper Dj" is ?

now here is more for you to complain about, but hey I aint worried, it the ones that complain that should be

Now The Future of the Dj Business

With the advent of the digital Dj and virtually unlimited access to both legal and "illegal" music downloads,
it’s easy to see why more and more people are becoming Dj's. This is very bad for the business, since you’ll get
people working for next to nothing, and these folks tend to bring your prices down too (especially if they want your job).

Try to aspire to that master level Dj who’s the combination of a great MC, a decent mixer, and a killer promotions coordinator. I sincerely believe that this is the next step of club and bar entertainment. People are really begging to be entertained, and they’re very willing to give up their hard-earned dollars for good quality entertainment. But it’s up to you, to make this industry recognize the star potential of this type of Dj (Club and Mobile djs). You’ve got to show the club and bar owners the potential of the master Dj. Only then will your earning potential increase to the star level salaries. With all the money these clubs and bars bring in, there’s no reason you as a master level Dj, being the drawing figure to your room, shouldn’t eventually get a big salary proportional to those big dollar sales. It’s going to happen. Whether you want to be on that speeding train or not, is all up to you.

So whatever direction you choose, always remember,
NOT to pick your nose in public, as your always being watched.....

have a nice day

DJ Dennis = ???

DJing is about having a laugh and fun with your mates. If you can play in a club and get some cash, awesome, same if you can throw a killer party. DJing just to make money and 'entertain' seems to kill the fun of the whole thing. And i'm quite happy playing a few gigs every few weekends to have a good time, while I work in radio and TV as a journalist during the week (which I enjoy), thank you very much Dennis.

Auto Sync Wont Help With Soul Funk And Disco........
i recently started spinning on TT. my music genre of choice: old school funk, soul and disco. No sync buttons can help you playing these genres, so for me so i had no choice but to learn beatmatching the old school way which i'm more than happy to as a respect to the music and the art.

I love the element of the human touch when it comes to beatmatching, especially on those old tracks that vary in bpm... yeh tracks will go off beat slighty at times but that's what gives your set some life, a human character....those small mistakes means people know you're actually doing it manually, helps to give your mix a feeling; similar in the way you would compare the sound of a real band and guitar and horn section as a pose to a computer generated beat, or the similar to that 'live' sound of vinyl over digital music - its the imperfections in the music that give it it's soul.

So getting back to the point, i think the future of djing relys on the genres you play. My genres are safe - as no one with a computer and traktor can come and just starting playing it because the music can't be auto synced..... and that peeps.. IS A GOOD THING!

hahaha.. what do you mean? I speak truth.. you can't auto sync disco or funk tracks...so if you don't know how to beatmatch manually.. ain't gonna happen for ya! Whether you learn to do it the traditional way or not is completely up to each DJ... whatever works for you man.. but at the end of the day.. i think most would agree you'll become a better dj in the long run giving yourself a foundation... don't think most people would argue with that?

I also agree with what someone else said.. i think many DJ's go over board with effects and f*cking around with loops too much.. sometimes less is more, and sometimes people want to hear the track that they know rather than someone messing with it too much.

ahhh ... i do believe what we have here is the reason dennis rambles and preaches all over this sub-forum.

quite simply, he's been in the game so long making a neat dollar or 2 and now the digital dj is cutting his grass. Hence the tiresome rants and scare mongering about getting licensed and taunts about "career" djs.

I'm pretty sure 90% of his posts will reinforce this

Terrible post. I hate the promoter DJs these days. It seems like some DJs only get their gigs from the size of their guest lists rather than their ability. It's a real shame and has dramatically degraded the quality of DJs in the local industry.

Thread is now gold since Dennis rolled up, cheers dude.

As this thread has taken on a personel tone I'll add mine.

The future of my djing will be the same as it's history.

Those glorious three hours I get on a Friday arvo after work, the ones where my wife keeps the kids upstairs and away from me, the ones where I drink to many beautiful cold beers too quickly, the ones where I try and roll a steady building groove for the lot or change it up on the hour or experiment with things I know propbably wont work but I try it anyway, the ones where at the end there are records out of sleeves lying around everywhere, the ones where I go back to the first MP3's that I bought and try and slot them in with the new, the ones that in a Brisbane summer leaves me a shitless, sweating elated mass and prompts my neighbour to ask about "the party" I have every Friday arvo.

Nothing beats playing a great gig and I hope I have a couple more left in me but if I never play out again, I dont care.

good on you baax, sounds like you do it for the pure love of it. Why do you think your 'playing out' days could be over? They won't be if you don't want them to.

Went to a vinyl vs digital party last night. Both the vinyl and the digital guys rocked the crowd (although there was one digital guy on an s4 who couldn't mix to save his life, how do you stuff up with an auto sync?). Anywy, by far my favourite digital Dj was a techno dude using traktor and a lauchpad, it worked really well with loops, glitchy sounds and those techy beats.

I've realised that the newer technology really will favour techno, some forms of house, psy etc, while turntables will favour hiphop, funk, disco, drum n bass etc. As long as DJs can use all kinds of systems and not just digital (or just vinyl for that matter).

Afterall, the techno ethic is all about sampling the past to create the future!

Went from a software virtual DJ setup > midi controller > to CDJs > turntables > DVS > iPod/iTunes/iPad... (i'm not joking, i've played gigs with an iPad 'spinning' Usher, Chris Brown).

Seems like people don't give a funk about 'the mix' as long as they are getting smashed to their fav top 40 song.

And DJs who play at tweeny clubs, take themselves too seriously. I have a few 'facebook friends' who regularly spam my inbox with their event invites calling themselves 'the revolution' in electronic dance music.

Sh*t I've learnt by observation in my short djing 'career' :

1. CDJs are an overrated rip-off. If you are planning to play 4/4 house/'electro', get yourself a copy of Traktor. WIth a small controller and soundcard. You can turn up to the club with your laptop, soundcard and mouse (I've seen it done countless times).

2. Club managers like you a) to suck their small pen15s and/or b) have 1000+ fb 'friends' and put at least 1/3 of them on your guestlist as 'attending'. (Also don't talk to them about getting paid after they snorted coke (i wish someone told me that when i started)).

2.1. If clubs/promoters/mangers cared about the music - they wouldn't hire you, they'll get someone famous/top of their genre.

3. Oldfart DJs keep going on about vinyl and 'staying true' - we get it, it took you years master beat-matching and your pissed about 'sync'. I would be pissed too if i learnt to ride a bike and they invited a bike you can't fall off from... we get it. All the 'big name' djs got over and moved on... you should too.

4. Trance/happy hardcore - mentioning that you are a trance dj can either a) ruin your reputation [as a person and dj] or b) get you a bj [from azn/lad tweens]

5. Scene DJs really care about their outfits: 'Mainstream' electro house/banger DJs - tank top with european designer sunglasses vs. 'indie' electro house/bangers - ironic t-shirt with leather jacket, tight jeans.

6. Every DJ you meet thinks they know everything about DJing (I'd admit it, I'm part of that).

interesting discussion. i think the future of djing is bright. thanks largely in part to digital music and how easy it is for independent labels and artists to share their art without commercial bullshit and getting shafted by big labels.

The likes of beatport, juno, and even itunes have made music so much more accessible and easy to distributeand share. Soundcloud is brilliant. it is much harder for commercial juggernaught labels (the likes of Sony/BMG etc) to control the music market. thanks to technology, music....good music....regardless of genre...has been handed back to the people - large commercial labels no longer have the means to control, dictate and pigeonhole music and tell us what is cool or worthy for the mass market. we decide. we listen to soundcloud. we start to follow independent labels - without bias or commercial prejudice.

once upon a time, dj's were the coniseurs of music. they brought music to the masses with a lot less control or influence of major labels. overnight they turned unknown artists into rock-starts. i think this will happen again. there are djs out there who have a pure love of music and share this with people. and there are people who follow certain labels, producers, and, yes, djs, for their tastes. yes, i think the future of djing is bright.

Well, here's the inevitable conclusions that I foresee...

CDJ's: Completely forgotten and thrown away like an aborted baby.

Ipads/S4 controllers, etc: Again, completely forgotten and thrown away, only to be replaced 5 years later by large interactive hologram. Cloud storage will allow instant access to online file storage servers. Oh, and did I mention, all tracks will be pre-sync'ed so you wont break a sweat while posting on Facebook about the hot chick you just picked up! Harmonic key mixing? Track selection? Pffft! That was so yesteryear...

Turntables: Will be considered junk at all clubs and ultimately thrown away. Vinyl events will be restricted to more secluded, obscure events or house/bush parties to relive the nostalgia, but will still attract a few admirers. Grey haired DJ's will drone on and on about the good old, innocent Vinyl days, where the labels acted as a shit filter and only released the cream of the crop.

microcrap has too much control now

would use cloud for nothing unless its a external hard drive that I can control not from a server online thats not my own!

I have more time to be creative when an ipad plays music for me.

I think CDs will be the standard for a while. It's just easy for a DJ to turn up with a folder of CDs and play, without having to set up a laptop, controller etc (especially if DJs are playing back to back). Mind you I just bought serato scratch and it's awesome playing with the feel of vinyls and no time to get bored with the auto sync!

They're both essentially computers.
