On the travel tripod for travel front....

Looking at Nismo's night shots remind me of my night time running around Florence. At the time I had a cheap ass $30 Dick Smith tripod thing, that started out banana-shaped, with the three egs bunched together, it would then spin at the top so all three legs were separated to form the tripod. Really handy on tables, or even walls. But it was plastic, so flexed when held steady for long exposures, and eventually cracked.

So I replaced it with the Manfrotto 345 Table Tripod Kit...

Very nicely engineered, can be used with or without the telescopic pole, and the carry case means it'll fit into a bag side pocket or belt.

A detailed review here...
http://www.thewsreviews.com/2009/11/...op-tripod.html
...and I re-attached the cork feet with Araldite after a month of watching the slip around the leg tips.

Downside is that it isn't too well suited for roughy rocky ground as the legs are spread apart so far.

Also seems stupidly priced @ $165-175 (I think I paid around $100 about 10 years ago).
http://www.shopbot.com.au/m/?m=manfrotto+345&x=0&y=0

But hey, it'll take your lightweight 70-200 f/2.8 rig...

That micro-sized SLIK MINI II might be the biz of the bargain priced units?
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SLIK-MINI...item3a692a765a
That is, if it doesn't flex while holding down the shutter, it could be the ticket.

Yeah basically I don't want to carry the 70-200 around as it weighs more than my right leg so worried I won't have anything longer than 40mm. The 35mm will be on most of the time as it's my favourite, I could take the 50mm instead I guess but I want my 35mm goddamnit! Too many different activities requiring different kit

^^^ Or...

17-40mm + 50mm + 135mm (with a teleconveter) would make a pretty slick, light weight rig.

Running through the streets of some of the poorest places on earth with fancey-dancey camera kit would not be my idea of a good time. I just had friends get back an epic month through India, and once they arrived at a music festival, so out came the SLR (with probably just the kit lens) and the good times stopped, the glares from the locals increased, the vibe was killed, so the camera went away altogether, and then everyone got back into the groove of things.

Maybe I'm just being paranoid/insecure about my photographic rights, but I do think a level of respect needs to be held for the local whose world one has landed in. I'd want to be going as discrete as possible. So a compact 50mm (and/or a compact 28, 30 or 35mm) prime would be my preference for city street shooting over there.

i dont think theres anywhere youre going that will require taking all your gear. unless you got mulitple stops in one day like a sunrise, then city scapes then a zoo then a social gathering at night. but i also guess it depends on how you travel. ive always had a home base or at least a car/camper to keep my gear in so i only take whats necessary for the shots while im out.

spec makes a good point tho, itll also depend on where you are. if youre in a really poor part of the world swinging a big white look at me dildo around, its going to draw alot of attention

while we're onthe subject of mini tripods, are there any ones that can go lower than those (which seem to be bottoming out round 17-18cm) or do you have to start looking at those upside down tripod adaptors?

With the centre extendable pole removed, the Manfrotto 345 I posted hovers pretty low. I can measure if you want.

But I'm still baulking at the price Manfrotto are asking for this thing ($165-175 on shopbot.com.au). I'm still pretty sure I paid around the $100 mark a decade ago, and when there were little alternatives. Surely their production run has been going long enough to drop the price? And they must only cost a handful of dollars to produce, even if they are made in Italy?

thanks for that tho i did some googling yesterday and found that it was around 18cm as well. after looking at a couple diff ones i dont think you can really go much lower without sacrificing sturdyness or a pivot head. even $100 is pretty rich for what you get! might do a bit more reading on that slik one. $23 you really cant go wrong

im bored, so i tried it out. the camera weighs 996g. i didn't have a heavier lens on hand.

so here's a pic of it about 45 degrees forward at lowest height (handy suction cup at work!) and at full forward 95 degrees or so at full height.

feels quite sturdy in both setups. i'd trust it with 2kg at lowest height and camera in normal position rather than forward.

Nah, the Manfrotto tripod, just the legs and ballhead (ie. extension pole not used), raises the plate just 10.5cm off the ground. And when the plate is tilted to vertical (for a portrait orientation), the screw mount for the camera is positioned just 7.75cm from the ground.

But you could buy almost 15 mini SLIKs for the price of 1 of these Manfrottos... ouch!

^^ Standard kit for me is D700 or D300, battery grip, either Nikkor 14-24mm 2.8 or Nikkor 70-200 2.8, and if I have a flash onboard add an SB-900, gets quite weighty.^^

^err... why would you be using your full rig on a desktop tripod anyway? application would more than likely be for table top macros or "in a pinch" landscapes. if you ditch the "im not shooting 50 frames/sec or shooting continuously for a week straight" batteries, grip and flash, the 14-24 and d700 would easily come under 2kg

Nah, just can never be bothered to take of the battery grips, I was thinking one of these could be handy as I like to walk home after some gigs and take pics, but don't want to lug around a normal sized tripod and want to make it easy to just chuck the camera on the tripod without stuffing around taking bits off in the middle of the night on my walk.

The camera feels alot more comfortable with the grip on too imo.

And who can be arsed unscrewing the grip, taking batteries out, putting them back in etc etc.
Once the grip went on mine that's where it's staying for as long as i can see!

You guys must suck pretty hard to be whinging about a few grams. Seriously...

D700, 14-24, and one standard battery is over 2kg, damn heavy stuff, but I like it. I also pointed out what I intend to push the limits of my gear with to make sure I get the right product. I do have tripods that can easily take the weight I need and more, but it's good to know you can have a small unit in the bag that can cover your needs in a pinch.

i used to be like that until recently i've started taking the grip off to mount on the tripod. With the grip on + 24-70 it REALLY screwed with the center of gravity. The gorillapod can't hold it & my proper frotto tripod gets vibration with the grip on. Much more sturdy without

plus it means i don't have to unscrew my rapidstrap mount from the hotshoe
