Earbuds for iPod - what to buy?
I'm after some new earbuds. Not for DJing, for use with an iPod. Like most people here I won't compromise on sound, hence why i've asked in this forum.

My Sennheiser CX-400s have just given up the ghost. I thought they were OK, bass was good, but not very crisp/punchy at all thus they drained on my ears after a while. To be honest I found the CX-300s I had before those to be better. Are there some newer/improved Sennheiser's I should consider?

A mate just bought some Monster Turbine Pro Copper Edition buds. They are very exy, but he raves about them. Has anyone else used those?

Would prefer something under $200, but willing to spend a bit more if its really worth it. Great sound is my only other prerequisite.

Cheers
tribalism

I have the CX-300 II's and I love them. Maybe get another pair of those plus some Comply foam tips. They are meant to improve the bass and isolation.

Sennheiser or AIAIAI if you want value for money, if you want to spend more than ~$70 there's so much choice.

^ Ultimate Ear = 1 year waranty, Sennheiser = 2 year (new pack off the shelf instant replacement at JB Hi Fi, all they asked me was whether I wound the cable around the player as that causes cable wear)

Speaks volumes about the build quality imo...though Ultimate Ear off 30 waranty for poor fit, which is nice...can buy them to just try them out, if you don't like even the sound quality, you can say they don't fit and get your money back.

I've had the CX300 II's in the past and rated them very highly...if you're OK with spending up to $200 tho, you could try their higher end models, CX 980 or IE 6 or 8's...heck, you can get Shure In-Ear DJing buds for that price (though no idea what they're like)
Pete Gordon - Deep and Low

Slower tempo but still with balls, deephouse, slow-mo, futurehouse, nudeep, indie, nudisco, hints of progressive, whatever the fuck you want to call it, just good shit! Get on it

I've got a pair of these (https://www.sony.com.au/support/product/mdr-ex700sl):

I love 'em. All other IEMs I've used require me to put devices to around 40-50% for decent listening...

Isolation is great and surprisingly little power required to drive these: can put volume to around 15, 20% on public transport and hear nothing but music.

Not heard a pair myself, but been told you can get these at a reasonable price and they sound quite good (http://www.audio-technica.com/cms/he...54c/index.html)

Klipsch S4i are definately the way to go. Like every speaker they are a bit harsh straight out of the box but once you run some tones, white & pink noise through them for a week they really come into their own. They also have an oval earplug which does fit a lot better than circular.
Think they are $150 from Apple, you might find them cheaper at computer stores etc. but no guarantee then of them not being fake.
I can't recommend them enough!

I had a similar pair which (alas) died. The great thing about them was that the driver was larger than 90% of in ear buds out there. Nice definition at the bottom end.

At the moment i'm travelling with Sennheiser CX 880. I'm happy with the extra amount i paid for them too (Vs the 300s). The clarity and definition (all through the spectrum) is most satisfying!!!

Second vote for the Klipsch S4i. I've had a pari for about 12 months, use them about 8 hours a day and they're flawless. Great noise reduction, perfect for noisy trams or offices.

You can pick them up for around $80.00 on eBay and they come in a snazzy metal carrying tin with replacement earbuds.

AKG have decent selection, http://www.akg.com/personal/In-ear%2...psmand,12.html
I have the K 330's, picked em up for around 70 at JB Hifi, very good noise reduction, only thing is they is the highs are a bit harsh sometimes. I hear Sony have good bass if you're looking for that instead.

CX-300's. I really liked them until they went AWOL. I'll probably buy another pair soon actually. Only problem was the rubber inserts never really sat or fit right in my ears, might look into those foam ones. $22 cant complain though..

Audio Technica have some kickass buds. Worth a check out. Also the Shure range are seriously good, tho may be a bit pricy.

Hi ddel,

I am a local Sennheiser contact.

In regards to your CX 300, there are different ear sleeve sizes, have you been using the right size.

Please let me know, if you've further questions in relation to Sennheiser products.
Regards,

i got the cx300ii which is good but i also got the hifiman-re0 + fiio-e5 (mini amp) which is better.. a LOT better.. the mid and the hi (all the high freq and vocal) is so much better its not in the same league with the cx300.. the low is not as loud as the cx tho but if youre listening to pop and rock it doesnt matter (they have bass booster on the fiio e5 but it sounds fake and not so nice)..

i got the cx300 for $70 and both the hifiman-re0 + fiio-e5 for around $110 in my country, what im saying is it doesnt have to be the re0+e5 but be open for earphone+mini amp package.. the re0 + e5 is the best bang-for-buck you can get (i googled it before purchase), the only downside with it is that you have to carry an extra mini amp beside your ipod (but there is a solution to this, just double tape your mini amp with your ipod), and you have to charge the mini amp every time you charge your ipod (runs for 15-18 hrs after fully charged almost the same with ipod)

and yes, stay away from skullcandy

hope that helps

i got the Comply foam tips in the mail today for my CX-300's. They are much more comfortable than the original silicone tips and fit in the ear more tightly. Used them at work today and they block out exterior noises better and improve the sound slightly.

but when it comes down to it

it really is what you want to buy at a reasonable price

test all the ones above suggested and see what best suits you

I have a few of the ones above for my HTC phone and they work very well for what I need!

have a great time buying some! (maybe buy some for others too)

errrrgh, he has a point, over ears are fine, sharing in ears with random strangers (and pretty much anyone who isn't your partner) is a hygiene issue.

Which ones? Most places I've been to that demo headphones have a big sign up explaining exactly why they CAN'T demo in ear buds.

ok then if you guys think is so UNHYGENIC

how many you know have hearing aids
when you go to BUY a set you have to TRY on some that would work yes ?

oh no thats un hygenic too

some shops have ways of you testing them like they do for hearing aids that fit in your EAR

oh what about when you buy custom ear plugs how do they do that

oh thats right you know it all - get a life you lot you have no idea what retailing has

I asked a simple question, which store lets you demo in ear ear plugs? You said some shops do, and I said, most places that I've seen have signs up demoing exactly why they don't, for hygiene reasons.

As for hearing aids, I don't know I'm not an audiologist, but I'd imagine if they do have sample units, the bit that goes in people's ears they'd have a whole bunch of them and then sterilise them all at the end of each day, just like other regular medical instruments. I can find out for you if you like?

Custom ear plugs, they shove a big lump of putty in your ear, wait for it to dry, and then send it away and make the ear plugs based on that mould.

just replacing some HD25's which after 10 years i'm totally sick of, plus the headband is fucked. They're for use in DJ Booths all over the world my study, where the magic happens. Just for djing but, i haven't got a musical bone in my body, it's apparent in my DJ sets lol.

Ah got ya, I love my HD25's for DJing, but I've been getting into a bit of studio work as well and starting to take it a bit more seriously so thought I'd invest in some decent cans
