Spoiler:
I haven't given up hope, I'm just irritated... The first three books man, the amount of shit that is just ALWAYS happening. Just crazy shit. Even in Feast for Crows, which is one where everyone bitches about nothing happening, we had some pretty major shit, e.g., Arya joining the Faceless Men, the whole thing with Euron Crow's Eye, and most boss of all, Cersei finally getting fucking convicted of some of the fucked up shit she's so clearly guilty of. But Dance? Fuck. I was SO hoping that Dany would marry the **** Loraq, leave him in charge of the city to rule, and FINALLY go to Westeros. But fuck. She does virtually nothing apart from eventually riding and taming her dragon.

Apparently he's not starting the Winds of Winter till 2012... So I expect by the time it comes out I'll have pushed myself into an early grave via succumbing to alcoholism in my depression of waiting for these books to come out.

end of book:

Spoiler:
anti-climax much??? seemed a whole lot of reading about people wanting/needing to do something important and sitting on the hands.....

i enjoyed but still so much needed to be done... i was at least expecting cersei's shit to be sorted out.. whether she was found innocent or guilty whatever... bran's time beyond the wall was rather short and vague... i was so excited when Robett Glober commanded Davos to go get Rickon... and that was all.... Varys in the Epilogue was good.. all in all it was enjoyable but seemed to introduce more sub-plots without solving many of the remaining plots.....

also.. dany will have a new Khalsar at her command now... Khal Jhaqo would obviously remember her... sif he would attempt to capture her or kill her with a dragon by her side

End of Dance.

Spoiler:
So, I re-read a bunch of the Theon chapters. Two things I never picked up on:

1. Took me a while, but the singer, Abel, and the women he was with = Mance Rayder and the women he was with. I totally never picked up on that, stupid as it sounds.
2. So, three Freys disappeared, who were with Wyman Manderley. We know this **** hates Freys, because he told Davos he did, and because he's not retarded enough to think that Robb Stark killed his son. So anywho, at one point, at Winterfell, he's serving everyone himself, handing "pork" pies to the Freys and looking as happy as a pig in shit. He then says, quietly in front of Theon, that they should have a song about the Rat Cook. Now, the Rat Cook was explained in Storm of Swords in a Bran chapter. Basically, the Rat Cook hated some **** so much he baked his son in a pie and served it to him. So. I guess the insinuation is that Manderley waited till these three Frey mother fuckers were out from under his roof (and not protected by guest right) and then killed them, had them cooked into pies, and then fed them to the dead men's kin.

What a fucking mad ****.

Just finished.

Spoiler:
The whole thing felt a little all over the place. I guess that's a consequence of Martin just wanting to get it done.

I agree with some of the sentiments expressed here - not a lot happened and certain plot points could have been left at better places, particularly Stannis and the Boltons, and Meereen.

That said, I still enjoyed it immensely. I just wonder how George is going to fit so much into the last two books.

The Theon chapters were the best in the book. Gripping stuff.

I reckon he'll have to write an extra book... I mean... Let me try and list ALL of the shit he needs to wrap up:

(will spoiler this just in case, end of Dance stylez)

Spoiler:

Ok. We have:
1. Arya. Faceless men. Will she ever get back to Westeros, reunite with her wolf/brothers.
2. Jon. Will he survive, will he find out the truth of his parentage.
3. Dany, will she wrap everything up in Meereen, will she get her dragons under control and back to Westeros?
4. Tyrion. I mean, fuck, anything could happen there, as this book proved.
5. Connington. Will the Golden Company join with Dany or fight their own war?
6. Jaime. Will he survive, will undead Catelyn kill him?
7. Brienne. What the fuck will happen to her?
8. Victarion. What the fuck will happen to him?
9. Euron Crow's Eye. He's an easy one to forget, but he seems fairly confident he's going to be able to take over the country and bind Dany's dragons to his will.
10. Bran. How the fuck is he going to learn to be a Green Seer AND get back to help out against the Others?
11. Stannis. What next?
12. Melisandre. What's her actual game?
13. The Night's Watch in general.
14. King's Landing/the Tyrrells/Lannisters
15. Cersei.
16. Dorne.
17. Sansa/Alayna, and Littlefinger, with Harry the Heir and all that shit.
18. Davos. Will he save Rickon?
19. Howland Reed. We've heard about this mother fucker from book one, and yet he's still not appeared.
20. The Blackfish/Edmure Tully.

So yeah. Off the top of my head, he has to pull together all of that shit (and more I've probably missed) in two books. Possible? Given how fucking slow the last two books have been, not bloody likely.

Spoiler:
Martin confirmed it in an interview years ago. It doesn't say it much in Game of Thrones, but I guess the creators wanted to get it out of the way to understand Loras going so nuts... In a Storm of Swords when Jaime is talking to Loras in White Sword Tower there's all sorts of shit Loras says, like, "Renly was the best of them, I'll never betray him", blah blah blah.

Clash of Kings, there's a bunch of really subtle references to it, but the clearest one is when Catelyn, Stannis and Renly meet, Renly says something about Margaery Tyrell coming to his bed a maiden, and Stannis says, "In your bed, she's like to die that way."

end of dance

Spoiler:
Cool list of little things you might have missed in Dance, new info, theories and the like:

Quote:

-The Three Eyed Crow is Bloodraven.
-The Stark kids break all of the rules for warging that Varamyr's old teacher laid out (warging into cats, eating humans in animal form and warging into humans).
-The ever-awesome Manderly served pie made out of the dead Freys at the wedding feast. This is especially funny in that Roose carefully checks to make sure that Manderly eats it before having some himself.
-Mance Rayder's Winterfell infiltration plan was a direct ripoff of Bael the Bard's one right down to the fake name (Abel). Maybe Mance hid from Ramsey down in the crypts as well?
-Hodor ate a bit of one of the Night's Watch deserters who betrayed Mormont at Craster's Keep. Lots of cannibalism in this book...
-Jon might be AA or might be AA NOW. Let's break down the prophesy:
When the red star bleeds: the idiot knight who took on Wun Wun has a star as a sigil and there's something red about him (hair? forget...) and he's bleeding.
and the darkness gathers: the watch's oath and it's evening.
Azor Ahai shall be born again: getting stabbed to death is a good way to set up being born again.
amidst smoke: Jon notices that his wounds look like they're smoking.
and salt: Bowen Marsh's tears
-In Bran's visions the girl beating the boy at sword sticks was probably Lyanna beating her brother Brandon.
-It seems that Arya saw the Kindly Man sneaking up on her and whatnot by warging into a cat. By personal theory is that warging will make it impossible for Arya to stay a Faceless Man even if she becomes one for a while, since they'll always be a lot of Arya in Nymeria and the Faceless Men can't root out that connection.
-Ned saying that he hopes that they'll (presumably Robb and Jon) be as close as brothers, is yet another clue that they're not actually brothers, but instead cousins.
-Melisandre saw a human becoming a wolf and then a human again. Combined with Jon's last word and the Varamyr prologue, it should be pretty clear that Jon has warged into Ghost and his consciousness is sticking around in there and then he'll (presumably) somehow get his consciousness back into a human body (presumably his after Melisandre fixes it up, perhaps by burning bits of it like Victarion's priest did) later. Also note that the technical wording of the Night's Watch oath gives Jon an out and Jon/Dany shippers hope if Jon get resurrected.
-Good boots being hard to find (Janos Slynt, Daeron, etc.).
-One reason I'm distrusting Ramsey's letter to Jon Snow is because of Tycho Nestoris. If there's any one who could bail out Stannis at least a bit from his disaster it's the banker I'm sure that no matter what else happens in this series, we'll hear a good bit more from the Iron Bank.
-It seems that on the Rhoyne they sailed past the same stretch of river twice.
-It seems that Ramsey has castrated Theon, or at least rendered him sexually incapable.
-Tyrion's repeated mention of his first job as drain administrator, I think I know how he's going to take Casterly Rock.
-Jeor Mormont could have been a weak warg and is living on in some limited capacity in his old pet. Alternatively, his crow could be one of Bloodraven's wargs (possibly Rhaenys' black king's landing cat as well?) that he uses to keep an eye on things at Castle Black.
-Danny might no longer be barren. It is theorized that her heavy bleeding at the end of the book might have been an early miscarriage due to the nasty berries since MMD's prophesy might have been fulfilled:
"When the sun rises in the west and sets in the east," Quentyn Martell's death, he is the sun.
"When the seas go dry" The Dothraki Sea has gone dry.
"and mountains blow in the wind like leaves." The dragons' destruction of the pyramids seems the most likely here. They are burned by the dragons and the ashes blow in the wind.
It is possible that Drogo (and Rhaego?) are living on in some form in their dragons as we know that that sort of thing it possible from Varamyr and that fits with the prophesy of Drogo being returned to Dany (maybe).
-Trying to dissect Frey inheritance makes my brain hurt, but I have a suspicion that Big Walder is rapidly moving up the list.
-Theon hears Bran in the Godswood. Some of the other instances (like him talking with Ned) could be real too, you can't change the past by looking through the trees into the past, but you might be able to make some of the things that have already happened happen.
-Victarion's darkly hilarious attempt to breed peace and understanding between R'hollor and the Drowned God with his ecumenical religious ritual.
-"Mance" says "I'm not the king" while being burned. Bit tip-off there. Especially when combined with: "Inside his cage, Mance Rayder clawed at the noose about his neck with bound hands and screamed incoherently of treachery and witchery, denying his kingship, denying his people, denying his name, denying all that he had ever been."
-The weird little asides in Jaime's chapter about the hills named after breasts seem to be about Bloodraven and Bittersteel's moms and their respective tits.
-Griff thinks of Lemore as a "lady" not a septon. Who is she? Is she Ashara Dayne? Could be, could be...
-Who the hell is the Stark woman in Bran's visions hoping that her kids will get vengeance for her?
-The appendix confirms that Lanna is the Sailor's Wife's daughter. Apparently whores go to Braavos and Tyrion has a trueborn daughter.
-We get a glimpse of Pennytree where Duncan the Tall's old master came from. Egg claimed it as a royal fief it would seem.
-The bit from Bran's vision: "Then there came a brown-haired girl slen*der as a spear who stood on the tips of her toes to kiss the lips of a young knight as tall as Hodor." refers to Duncan the Tall it would seem. Is Hodor his descendant? Are we going to get to see Nan in the next Hedge Knight book?
-The Ghost of High Heart could be the same as the wood witch that Barristan mentions. She could have been a Child of the Forest as she is mentioned as being very short. She could possibly be the Child of the Forest who speaks the common tongue with Bran, she mentioned that she used to be out and about in the wider world. This means that we could have someone alive who was at Summerhall. Most interesting.
-The bit in Jon's mind about killing the boy so the man can be born might end up coming true rather literally if the various Jon resurrection theories are true.
-Melisandre was sold into slavery, as seems common with Red Priests.
-It appears that Jon Connington is gay and had feelings for Rhaegar Targaryan.
-Val's reaction to Shireen's greyscale and the amount of exposition about it in Tyrion's and Griff's plotlines hint at there being something more to it than meets the eye.
-We know that one Mors Umber had a daughter carried off by wildlings and that Tormund "Giantsbane" has a son who is very tall. Did he steal his wife from the Umbers?
-The pet raven says "king" quite a lot around Jon and has for a while. Very interesting in addition to it saying Jon's full name.
-Bonifer the Good, who leads the Holy Hundred and is very religious and who is given guardianship of Harrenhall in AFfC seems to be Queen Rhaella's lost love who she was forced to abandon when marrying Aerys.
-Rhaelle Targarysan (Egg's daughter) married into the Baratheon family for love.

End of Dance

Spoiler:
The whole Summerhall thing really interests me... I'm theorising that Jon will be released from his vows because I reckon the Wall will come down... I mean, it has to at some point... If the wights and the Others can't travel through/past the wall due to it having spells forged into it, then there's really no threat to the realm while it stands... So somehow it'll have to come down.

To boot, the more I think about it, the more Jon can't be dead. Especially when you think about Brienne's final chapter in Feast, where she's literally about to get hanged.

I'm tossing up as to whether Aegon is really Aegon or just a fall back plan used for Varys and Illyrio. There's a theory floating round the internet that the reason the magister cares for him so much is because he is actually his son, and they've been having him raised by Connington and that as a fall back plan in case the worst were to happen to Viserys. As it so happens, Khal Drogo happened to Viserys, and now they need a back up plan, never imagining that Dany would not only hatch three dragon eggs, but also become a leader of a huge and reliable army, led by none other than Barristan the Bold, one of the finest knights in recent memory.

The thing is, the prophecy thing says "the mummer's dragon". Which doesn't necessarily mean a fake dragon, because Varys was born and raised a mummer, and it's clearly his intention that are guiding Aegon.

The Third Hedge Knight story, the Mystery Knight

Spoiler:
As well, even if it is the real Aegon, it hardly matters. The third Hedge Knight story talks about how the second Daemon Blackfyre dreamed a dragon egg would hatch, never imagining it wasn't a literal dragon, but just Egg coming out of his shell and learning how to be a true prince, or "dragon". Duncan says something about, "if a real dragon were to hatch, lords and common folk alike would rally to the prince who could lay claim to it.

Ergo, in my opinion, it doesn't matter that, if it is the real Aegon, he has the better claim, because Dany has dragons, and dragons can fuck shit up, and if you had to choose between a girl you know was alive and the rightful heir to the throne who also has three dragons, or a punk kid with purple eyes that every **** thought was dead for fifteen years who has no more than ten thousands swords, who are you going to follow? The bitch with the dragon, obviously.

Spoiler:
On Jon, the technical wording of the Night's Watch oath gives him a get out: "Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death."

The clincher re his "death" is his last word, "Ghost". From Varamyr's chapter we learnt that a warg's spirit can live on in an animal after their death, so Jon can just hang out in Ghost until Mel sorts his body out.

On "Aegon", I think you're right in that it doesn't matter. Whether he's Rhaegar's son, a Blackfyre or some random lad Varys and Ilryrio had as plan B doesn't really matter.

I like the theory that the old Bloodraven v Bittersteel rivalry will be reborn - with Dany going north to join Brynden and Bran and Aegon raising Dorne with the Golden Company.

The more I read about Dance, the more I really it probably wasn't as disappointing as I first thought. There's still a lot to come out of it and it was only really Dany's arc that struggled imo. I guess we shouldn't have expected too much given it did have to run side by side with AFFC in terms of timeline for much of its length.

If Martin can sort Dany/Meereen out, TWOW could be fucking boss.

Dance, end.

Spoiler:
I was thinking Ramsay might've just taken one ball... It never explicitly says, but they do talk A LOT about him not being a man anymore or something... I always had a soft spot for Theon, he seemed like he was kind of thrown into a situation beyond his control. Granted, taking Winterfell was a **** move, but it was his way of trying to impress the father who wanted nothing to do with him for things that weren't his fault in the slightest.

As a disclaimer, I haven't read ADWD yet, but I'm getting closer. OK, not really.

Jon survives, but the blood of the dragon has been split. See, Jon needs to be someplace that he has no right being, so George stabbed the bastard. Now someone will drag Jon to the desired location that he otherwise would have never went to be saved and healed This means that one of two things will happen either A) Something really bad is going to happen at the Wall, so Jon can't be there, or B) He's going to meet someone very, very important. I don't believe that Jon dies.

Howland Reed - in response to point B

Granted, taking Winterfell was a **** move, but it was his way of trying to impress the father who wanted nothing to do with him for things that weren't his fault in the slightest.

Spoiler:
i wouldn't say it's the father who wanted nothing to do with him... he was taken away at a young age... so his father was pissed that he was like the people who took him then his own people...

imo TWoW will be fucking epic... it's all set up on a platter now... all the discussions i've been reading have swayed me from being a little disappointed to thinking about all the possibilities... i'm not sure if it was initially disappointment in the story... just knowing that i'm gonna have to wait at least 3 years to find out what happens next

Good man. The more I think about it the more I realise how much better the books are. The fact he's always writing what the characters are thinking. You can't do that on TV. And so often they're thinking one thing and saying another. It gives them so much more depth.

End of Dance, predictions for Winds.

Spoiler:
So I reckon if Davos saves Rickon from what we can only assume is Skagos, if he gets him to Stannis, I see a chance: Stannis marries Rickon Stark (who realistically is one of the last hopes for a House Stark victory) to Shireen, his daughter, finally united the houses Baratheon and Stark, and uniting the North under Stannis. Seriously, one thing I fucking loved about Dance is how much the Northmen, with the exception of the Boltons and a few smaller Houses, fucking love the Starks.

There's something up with the greyscale thing - I think Shireen will have a much larger role in the coming books. And Patchface is some kind of prophetic creep.

I want to re-read LOTR first but I'm not sure that I will now haha... but we'll see.

Definitely read A Game of Thrones before Clash, if only because there are a lot of characters that either aren't named or don't appear in the series that will pop up in A Clash of Kings.

Spoiler:
Faceless Men are assassins - there is no chance they would pimp themselves out as sword-fighting instructors for 8 year-old girls.

I believe Syrio is Jaqen, but it wasn't Ned that hired him. He was hired to get at someone, but we haven't found out just who that is.

This is fucking amazing. Goes for an hour but I wish it went longer. They promise not to go past GoT but they drop he drops a few hints that are way too obvious so don't watch unless you've read them all IMO.

Also, I can guarantee the priest teaching Arya isn't Jaqen. Go back to A Clash of Kings. Read the chapter where Jaqen leaves Arya. He changes his face to a very specific description. Now, at the beginning of a Feast For Crows, in the prologue, you find the story of Pate. Pate is going to trade the key he's stolen from one of the Arch Maesters to a man calling himself the alchemist for a golden dragon, so he can buy the virginity of some local dock side wench. The alchemist gives him the coin, and pulls back his hood. We then get the identical description of the man Jaqen changed into in front of Arya. Pate asks him who he is, and he says, "No one, truly." Then Pate dies.

Then, in the last Sam chapter of Feast, we find that the boy calling himself Pate is still alive and well at the Citadel, working with Arch Maester Marwyn. So, Jaqen = at the Citadel.

Oh, and before you ask, no, not even I'm this nerdy about these books. I found this on the Westeros forums, went back and checked, and found them to be correct.

Me too dude... Seriously, the amount of times those guys at the Westeros forums have read these books is staggering, even when compared to me.

Another weird one I discovered there? In one of the earlier Brienne chapters of Feast, she's with this guy called Ser Shadrick, who is a hedge knight hunting for Sansa Stark. He suggests he and Brienne work together. In so many words, Brienne tells him to go fuck himself.

In the last Sansa chapter in Feast, we find that Littlefinger has hired three hedge knights. One of them is named Ser Shadrick, and he bears the same description as the Ser Shadrick Brienne met. So even with all of his supposedly perfect planning, seems like Littlefinger may have made a slip up here.
