The World Game 2012/13
Last year I made the thread for the ‘rest of Europe’, which was a little bit silly.
This edition is for all football related news and views from the rest of the world.

To start us off, how the hell did Venezuela hold Brazil to a goalless draw in the Copa America last night?!

ps:

Chile v Mexico should be a corker for anyone lucky enough to not be stuck at work today.

It was a entertaining match...if you are Chile fan. Mexico were dominated way to easy and with there star players out, it showed.

Chile could of easily scored more then 5 or 6 goals!

Disgraceful to football.

Quote:

Something has gone drastically wrong when a game of football ends with gunshots inside the stadium.

However, that's the horrific situation that transpired in Saturday's 'friendly' between Lebanon and Kuwait in Beirut. The fixture descended into ugly scenes after a brawl broke out between the two sides, before the outnumbered armed guards opted to fire their weapons in order to separate the teams.

It was an awful occurance for the Lebanese Football Association, who hosted the match, and more pertinently, it was an awful occurance for football in general.

However, there's been little said of the incident in the press in the western world, nor from Fifa, who distanced themselves from the event when contacted by Goal.com on Tuesday.

“International friendly matches are organised directly by the national associations concerned under their responsibility,” a Fifa spokesperson replied. “At the time of writing, Fifa has not received any official report regarding the match, and we are therefore not in a position to comment on this match.”

How a 'friendly' can evolve into an all-out brawl leading to weapons being discharged inside the stadium is difficult to fathom.

At this stage, it must be clarified no players were hurt as a result of the gunfire. The shots were fired into the air, as a means to separate the players after one armed guard was knocked to the ground. Two players were reported to have required hospital treatment but their injuries were a result of the brawl and not serious.

The clash occurred after 83 minutes of the match when Kuwait's Waleed Ali, with his team leading 6-0, came to blows with Lebanon's Abbas Attawi after alleged insulting comments made by the Lebanese player.

"Fifa has not received any official report regarding the match, and we are therefore not in a position to comment."

- Fifa spokesperson

There have been conflicting reports on what those comments consisted of, but one suggestion has been that it was a disparaging remark regarding the Kuwait Amir that offended Ali. The Kuwait player then struck Attawi on the head sparking the unpleasant scenes, with players and officials running from the sidelines to join in the chaos.

Lebanese armed guards also took to the pitch to break up the melee and after several minutes the tension eventually died down, as the referee called off the match.

However, the real trouble started when the two teams were marched off the pitch, as Lebanese players made another charge at their Kuwaiti opponents. The guards couldn't control the mob and when one went to ground, another opted to fire his weapon into the air almost a dozen times. It worked to good effect, as the Kuwait side left the arena, but it represented a poor image for football.

There has been criticism from Kuwait that there wasn't sufficient security in the stadium, given the political tension between the two nations. As the forces were so outnumbered and unable to keep a lid on the situation, they chose to fire their guns.

The Lebanese FA responded by stating that they hadn't expected such trouble given the match was a low-profile friendly. There has also been talk in Kuwaiti parliament that it was an ill-advised decision to hold a national team camp in Lebanon, given the political climate.

At this stage, Fifa won't be undertaking an investigation into the events, while the Beirut Daily Star reports the only post-mortem being conducted surrounds who instigated the brawl.

It makes you wonder if anything will be learned from this unfortunate episode.

Argentina just put in, by all accounts, a bloody horrible performance to draw 0-0 with Colombia. The locals were far from impressed, jeering the players off the pitch.

It's crazy how much talent Argentina have up front yet they can't score goals. Choosing the team would be a massive headache

Did Tevez start today?

Based on the Bolivia game, he shouldn't be anywhere near their first XI.

That's perfectly said!

Start Arguero and Di Maria instead of Lavezzi and Tevez...then maybe you can win a game!

Mexico vs Alemania 3-2 GOL DE CHILENA DE Julio Gomez QUE DA PASE A LA FINAL SUB-17 (07-07-11) - YouTube

Pretty awesome goal to score in the last minute of time, esp since he had been stretchered off after a heavy head clash earlier in the game too

That goal put Mexico into the final of the u17 world cup to be played against Uruguay

Same price as downing...

He's such a little **** the way he plays. Milks every free kick, bedazzles defenders, I just love it when he drops his shoulder in the box and hits the goal line...

Néstor made some brilliant saves to deny Argentina clear goals. Good game from Uruguay and a good game all together.

So who is going to pay 40mill for a guy that cant score a penalty

So Venezuela v Paraguay and Peru v Uruguay in the semis - what are the odds on an all -guay final?
But we're fools if we sit back and stare at the ground
While the weasels and analysts sing
If we want our place in history, we can't let the frustration

And as if Paraguay's fans needed any more incentive, Paraguayan lingerie model Larissa Riquelme's pre-tournament pledge to get her kit off if her team go on to win the Copa America is now within reach after giants Brazil and Argentina have both been bundled out at the quarter-final stage.

"If Paraguay wins the Copa America, I'll pose naked right there on the field," she was reported as saying earlier this month.
