Photography competitions.
So... what competitions does everyone know of?
Would be cool if people could post either weekly/monthly style comps, or when they hear of new ones.

Looking to learn, so a comp is a good kick-in the ass to get me practising

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Camera House - Photo Friday - (WEEKLY)
http://apps.facebook.com/photo-friday/?ref=ts

New briefs are released on Fridays. Prizes look decent. This month is a Tamron 60mm macro. ($500~)
Max submissions: 2

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Photo Continental - (MONTHLY)
http://www.photocontinental.com.au/comp

Start of each month, new theme. I've only seen the last 2 briefs, and both prizes were Lowepro camera bags -- not sure if that's always the case.
Max submissions: 2

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ted's Cameras - (MONTHLY)
http://teds.photophuse.com/

Only just saw it... appears the same as other monthly comps.
Prize this month is a P&S worth $600~
Max submissions: 5

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Brisbane Open House - (YEARLY)
http://www.brisbaneopenhouse.com.au/photo-competition

"Held annually in conjunction with World Architecture Day, selected buildings are opened for the public with guided and self-guided tours to encourage them to explore, re-examine and engage with Brisbane's built environment."

5 photo categories, for $1000 each.
Last years winners weren't outstanding, so might be worth a shot

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What have you got?

personally im not a fan of comps. cos theyre so subjective. speshly for generic ones like the lord mayor one last year. so many of the winners didnt even meet the brief.

before entering any comps make sure you carefully read the fine print. You never know who will end up with crazy rights to your entries

I'm not sure how much control they have..... but are you really that worried that an established company, is going to post "I LOVE COCKS LOLOL" on your wall?

I'm more worried about my friends thinking that I'm the kind of asshat that would let someone else post spam in my name.

You're friends probably think you're an asshat anyway.

The post pops up when you post an image... so once a week, if you do.
And you click that really tricky X, and it goes away.

First few edits for the Open House comp...

4 categories (Exterior/Interior/People/Detail)
Will probably post more -- feedback welcomed.

My PC is making editing painful.... HDR panos >_<

This is a pretty simple 9 shot job. (3 image HDR x 3 stacked images)

Saint Johns Cathedral (Interior) 01 by Hemerage77, on Flickr

Old Government House (Detail) 01 by Hemerage77, on Flickr

Magistrates Court (People) 01 by Hemerage77, on Flickr
Not sure I'll ever be shooting over the judges chair again...

yeah first one is fab. There's a dude on G+ that does mad hdr shots similar to that. He spends a shitload of time after the hdr merge in photoshop using topaz plugins. The guy is a freak but he spends hours on each image in post

My process sounds easier.

Drag 3 photos to Photomatix.
Drag random slider to left... evaluate... slide opposite end... pick winner. ( :science: )
Do it on all sliders.
Process it out after 2 minutes.
Whack is PS, simple S-curve, and maybe some levels. Spend a minute Blur/blend any HDR artifacts.
Pull it back to LR, add sharpening, noise reduction, and some clarity. HUZZAH!

..... but it takes an hour, cause my PC is a ****.

Rushed the editing, as usual.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/mckillo...7627918469092/

It was getting way too late for a school night, so you'll have to excuse the "oh shit, I'll just HDR it" photos

Need to do Powder/Fast tonight too - arg!

this is the other reason why i dont really go for comps, its like they pick the ones that "could use" the prize better.

speaking of wtf comp winners, check out the winner of the lord mayors job. i saved myself a bit of time by not entering this year!

http://www.museumofbrisbane.com.au/lmpagallery/

its a nicely done diorama but it seems its no longer the photographics awards, its the arts and crafts awards :-\

looking thru the entries theres also plenty obligatory bad hdrs and shots that dont have anything to do with the brief let alone brisbane

Win a LEICA V-Lux 2 Camera

To celebrate the photography exhibition Henri Cartier-Bresson - The Man, The Image & The World, brisbanetimes.com.au and the Queensland Art Gallery are giving one budding photographer the chance to win a LEICA V-Lux 2 Camera and tickets to the exhibition. Cartier-Bresson exclusively used a LEICA camera during his career.

To enter the draw, take a photograph using Cartier-Bresson as your inspiration and answer the question "In which country was Henri Cartier-Bresson born?"

Send your entry complete with details (name, age, mailing address and contact numbers) to btcomps@brisbanetimes.com.au with Henri in the subject line.

The winning entry will win a LEICA V-Lux 2 Camera and a Cartier-Bresson prize pack (including an exhibition catalogue, print and tickets). A runner-up will also receive a prize pack.

This competition closes on November 7, 2011. Terms and conditions apply.

I won last year - I'd recommend all contributors enter as it's an awesome prize. I'd enter this year, but I doubt I'd win 2 times in a row, plus I've barely contributed this year. PM me if you want to know anything about last years.

I see where you mean, but is this part a different thing?
What's the different comps?
First Place
The photographer of the image awarded first place will walk away with a Nikon D700 DSLR & AF-S 85mm f1.4 lens, worth over $5,000. They will also become a contributor to The Flickr Collection on Getty Images.

*edit*
Ah ha, found it on flickr -
http://www.flickr.com/groups_join.gne?id=1763990@N21

First place* – The photographer of the image awarded first place will receive a Nikon D700 DSLR plus a AF-S 24-120 VR Nikkor lens, combined value of AUD$4,799.

The People’s Choice Award will be a brand new Nikon 1 camera, not yet available in stores and only announced last month.

The People’s Choice Award is a new addition to this year’s Grab program, handing the decision-making over to anyone who would like to vote for their favourite image, via the Getty Images Australia Facebook page, from 28th November until 4th December.

trev - ive seen a "flyer" version doing the rounds that has that first bit about the d700 which may have been compiled originally but on the main page and tcs it goes on about the tba camera. i can hope cant i?

on a side note, theres been photos from a similar comp about a month ago where the prize was "a new model nikon" and the body pictured was badged as a d800. tho not being in english it couldve been a scam for all anyone knows lol

This is turning into a bitch thread, but I kinda like

They judged the Brisbane Open House photos.
"Several high commendations have been awarded. The Detail category held some exceptional entries this year and the judges awarded 3 high commendations for this category.

Entries were judged on the basis of three criteria - creativity, quality of photography and significance to architecture.

Prizes have been awarded to the best photos in four categories:

Exterior
Interior
Detail
People"

Sandstone doorway... architecture!

Other commendations here;

This is no love song and it serves no use, but if you want to sing along to some verbal abuse
It might make you feel better and it's good for the soul, take four letters and let's rock n roll

Yeah nice one - this is one I might actually enter, having had a bit of a science theme going myself earlier in the year
