Attempt two at the sunrise gig, trying to make the most of the overcast sky. The image doesn't have that much impact but i think it's kinda moody and it's all practice. Can't wait to get some filters, need to get saving.

Wello point - the tree everyone takes a photo of is just to the right

'twas a really grey and dreary day and i didn't think I'd get a pic that was any good out of it, but wonders will never cease!

that is the business. I love the blowout on the left and the colours are great. this is the perfect scene I would love to try out my 10 stop ND filter too. I am considering getting up really early tomorrow morning to drive to bells beach for sunrise. Weather permitting... Not looking good at the moment either.

Cheers

As I don't have filters, I had to HDR the sky/foreground together -- but I blew that spot on the left back to the +1 exposure.
I've got some shots from the back side of the hill, down on the rocks, which I'm yet to edit.

Only annoying thing is the seamist/bokeh on the left which I didn't clean well enough -- didn't have my lens hood
Not that the 17-40 does stuff all anyway... weird little piratehat!

nah I reckon that's what makes it look so good.. It kind of looks like a light leak. so is this actually separate images? or is this one image that has been under/over exposed in photoshop before being merged?

3 bracketed photos. -1/0ev/+1
Ran it through Photomatix.
Then I ran the same HDR over the 0ev image, and blended that back in over sections that had less than desirable blends (waves)

Ah I see.. I think I need to learn how to do that. I always have that problem of movement when I am shooting HDR and never knew how to fix it other than using a single image (which I don't want to do).
I ended up trying out the 10 stop filter this morning I only really got one useable shot because I kept over exposing all the others. I think I still need to read up a bit on this. It seems pretty tricky to get it right. this was a 5 minute exposure but when I view it at 100% I have to say it isn't as sharp as I would like. I am wondering what the issue is here. It's stopped down to f22. I am wondering if the wind is the problem. Is this the kind of thing that I should be using mirror lockup?

f22 is possibly part of the problem.
http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/diffraction.htm (first google hit, don't cry kids! )

Ideally, for that shot you did -- you'd have your normal 5min exposure, and say... a 3minute one which would be for the sky.
You add both photos to Photomatix, and it'll merged them together how you please (ie, spastic overblown HDR or natural)

Mirror lock-up only stops mechanical shake on the initial shutter operation, I believe.

If you process your shot with a fair whack of sharpening (80~) and maybe 15-20 noise reduction, with about... 30~ Clarity (all in Lightroom) -- you'' pull a fair whack of detail back.

Cheers Hemi

re: the 1st pic - There were car lights lighting up bits of the water at times, I had a green fluro light thing (so i didn't trip and break my neck) which has made the rocks all green and I was trying to light the rocks and water up with different lights just to see how it would come out

I may have added some cross processing to this shot to bring out the colours a bit more, but i was reeaally tired when i did this and still don't know if I like it or not

I think i do

Here's another burny pic - one gets bored while waiting for the sun to come up

Thanks mate. Would like to have had better weather but at least it was moody rather than boring.

Looking a little closer to home recently. Two shots at sunset from Lake Burley Griffin in Canberrra.
